So testament to the auto... Today my local subaru club went on quite a long drive. I took the legacy (half expecting either the motor or tranny to blow up...). I drove the thing WOT all day long, always shifting at redline, hitting 100+....... etc, etc, etc. Abuse, etc. Basically I beat the piss out of the car, and if I break the old tired driveline, I'll put better parts in. The auto not only did amazing all day, it actually shifts better now after some good abuse. Guess I cleared something out.... I'm still 5speeding it... but the auto is a GOOD transmission. The gear ratios suck though...

Have you ever driven a subaru automatic? They do surprisingly well. The Legacy is my first automatic car ever, and I was sort of hard on how much subaru autos suck. But after driving this one, I kinda like it.

EA82 oil pressure pegged
987687 replied to hooziewhatsit's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hmm, oil pressure doesn't usually go UP as engines age. If it did we'd be hearing about ea82's blowing up into a cloud of oil instead of ticking lifters. If you ground the wire from the oil pressure gauge the needle goes to the top, you probably have corrosion causing a partial short. Lowering the resistance, causing a higher reading. -
I haven't had an issue downshifting mine manually. Actually, to tell you the truth, it's helped it. It had sticky valves when I first got the car. Using all the gear select positions seems to have cleared out some seldom used lines and it shifts better. If you really get on it over about 40 it won't always dowshift to 2nd, but it will manually if you put it in 2. Mine redlines 2nd around 60MPH. These autos are pretty tough transmissions, they take abuse quite well. Mine has 4.44 gears, good chance your's has 4.11. So your shift points may well be different than mine.

You have to shift it manually. Like coming up to a corner just go ahead and drop it in a lower gear so it doesn't try to shift on you as you power out. Actually works pretty. Even sliding it around slippy back roads. Sure, I'd prefer a 5speed. But it's what I got, and it works decent. My auto is really an old POS... And I still have fun

You can have lots of fun with an auto... My legacy is an auto, and a tired one at that. I can do just as much sliding around and awesomeness as I can with a 5speed.

If you're sticking with the EA engine, you can't (within reason) use an EJ transmission. My car was swapped from FWD to 4WD before I got it. Whoever did it welded in brackets for the carrier bearing. It looks really messy, but it works. When you get into it, I can take pics so you can see how it works.

That's cool. Because even small rust holes here fail inspection...

I take it you don't have state inspection in Alaska?

88 4wd subaru wheel bearing?
987687 replied to danzick's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I never have the tools to do what I need, so this sort of stuff is cool. Gives me ideas of how to make stuff up to get things done without the proper tool. Would have made that trailer wheel bearing job much easier today if I had one of those... ha. -

Love the puller. way cool. Nice work! -
Make a nice even layer of RTV all the way around the mating surface. If you get it on the screw holes it isn't going to hurt anything. I let the RTV get a little tacky, the assemble. What kind of dust? Like the dust that's ambient in the air? Or some metallic dust that's actually going to cause harm? If you have a few particles of dust it isn't going to hurt anything.... Seal it up and call it good. But $200 to R&R a subaru diff?! Is this a dealer? With a lift, tranny jack, air tools, etc. It shouldn't take more than an hour. Find a new shop... And they were going to charge essentially $190 to reseal the back cover? My god, how long does that take? Pull a few bolts out, seal it up, put it back together.

Changed the oil in my GL. That ea81 is the smoothest running suby engine I've ever seen. Just purrs. Then I took it out and got it all muddy, only to drive through a flooded road to wash the mud off... Get my disty wet and stall it A little WD40 later and it was good to go It's so nice having GL back on the road. Missed my old POS osoo much

I dunno about you, but if my tacos showed up in the middle of a blizzard in a lifted subaru I'd say ************ YEA!!! You'd get all my taco business, that's for sure!

Heat gun, I did a test. Back to black on the left, nothing in middle, heat gun on right.

You can get them at napa for around $50. When my ej22 had a bad head gasket the only symptoms were bubbles. I went ahead and replaced the gasket with no testing or anything... just assuming that was the issue, and it was. I figure I'd start seeing symptoms if I let it get worse, subaru head gasket issues are weird, and not like other cars.
