The 3speed auto doesn't have overdrive, so you're gonna run high RPMs at highway speeds. In my d/r GL with 26" tires I run about 3k at 70. puuuurs right along.

Brought home another one...

I bet the guy who sold that was doing the happy dance... I feel kinda bad for the kid though... Some people who won't take advise have to learn for themselves. Sometimes the hard way. We've all been in situations where we thought we were right, but were stupidly horribly wrong and learned a good life lesson from it. At least he's going to have fun for a little while ... -
The 100mpg car is sure interesting! But... there's something wrong with the pictures, click on the first picture of the 100mpg car, looks like and under the hood shot. Says it uses the 360 engine... but I see an ea81

I put newer OBS seats into my GL, had to cut off the mounting tabs, re-weld, get everything to line up, etc. I'd say swapping EJ seats into ea cars probably isn't worth it unless you get a good set for free... I like the newer seats though. And free is nice.

Steering Wheel Spline Count/Size
987687 replied to Kostamojen's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just went out to my garage and measured my spare ea82 wheel. Spline count is 36, and the diameter is a little over 1.5cm. Still though, ea81 and ea82 wheels won't interchange because the ea82 has the press fit cone thing, and the 81 doesn't. -
I always have a hell of a time getting diff drain plugs out... Spray it with PB blaster or some penetrating oil and let it sit for a while might help. But what I usually resort to is putting my 1/2" breaker bar in the plug. Then taking the spare tire jack and jacking up the breaker bar to loosen the plug. On my car it was so stuck this actually lifted the whole back end off the ground!! But some jumping on the back of the car broke it free and the plug came right out.

Help Please! - Direct Front Brakes Swap
987687 replied to Loyale 2.7 Turbo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've lived all over the world. So I've done a lot of shipping overseas... It's awful. -
I usually let off the gas when I shift in and out of 4wd, that way I'm not putting force on the transfer gears. As for top speed in 4wd... I've hit about 80mph drifting back roads in 4wd. There's no recommended top speed in 4wd, just don't use it on dry pavement. Duh.

Help Please! - Direct Front Brakes Swap
987687 replied to Loyale 2.7 Turbo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Shipping overseas can be a major huge pain in the rear. There are tricks to get around custom crap, and whatnot. But buying from an online retailer and having them ship overseas can be the biggest pain. They legally can't lie about why they're sending the package, so it can hang up in customs, get major fees attached to it, etc. If it's just a personal package you can say it's a gift, or sample merchandise or something and it'll get through without an issue. -
I have 205/75/14s on my GL with a 2" lift, so just a bit smaller than what you want. They fit just fine.
-
The OP said it was an MT, manual. Do you mean the rear diff, or the transmission? The front diff is part of the transmission on the manual, so the front diff shares the gear oil for the gearbox. So if the oil level is good for the transmission the diff should be alright too. You have to run them pretty low for a long time before blowing it up. With the rear diff, it probably isn't low unless you see signs of leakage. If in doubt, pull the top plug out and stick your finger or a stick in there to see where the level is. Should be about the same height as the top plug.

Whats broke on your subaru lately.
987687 replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The temp gauge wouldn't have been getting really hot water due to lack of circulation... Hopefully you didn't blow a head gasket or something. Only one way to find out... No idea what to torque the bolt to. Someone probably knows, or has a manual near by. Mine is in my car, I'll check for you next time I'm out. -
Isn't it because the 2wd trannies have a 3.7 diff?

How long did you drive it? It would overheat very quickly without circulation. It probably came off because the bolt was loose... Hopefully it didn't damage the threads. -

On the EA engines the water pump is powered by the accessory belt. It's on the bottom right of the engine when you're looking at the front of it. May have a fan connected. No water pump = unhappy engine. -

You can't really compare yaktrax to studded tires anyway. The things that go on your shoes don't really have any rubber that contacts the ground. Same with soccer cleats. It's just spikes. So of course they don't have any traction on a smooth surface. Studded tires actually do have a good deal of rubber that contacts the road when it's dry. They don't handle nearly as well as the same tire without studs on dry pavement, or summer tires, or whatever. So you just have to drive carefully. I had an incident in my Legacy with studded tires and came to the conclusion I just need to drive the speed limit... but it also meant I could drive the speed limit when the road was covered in ice and snow and the rest of traffic was going 5mph I hate studded tires just because they're friggin' loud... But that has nothing to do with safety.

Also with studs I've been told not to swap tires from side to side. Only to move them forwards and backwards. Because once the studs are driven in one direction it wears them a lot quicker driving them the other way.

If I'm ever down there I'm gonna drive an old suby home. haha.
