  1. Stock subarus handle much better than jeeps though.
  2. Almost forgot about this one. This is what happens when someone pulls out RIGHT infront of you on a slippery road.
  3. Bleed the brakes. If there's air in the line on one side it may not clamp as well, causing the car to pull.
  4. I shoulda updated before. It's a phase 2 harness, but phase1 engine. I have yet to make it to the junk yard to get either a phase1 harness, or a phase 2 intake manifold. I'm hoping the weather lets up a bit this week so I can do that. And get a few parts for my legacy while I'm there.
  5. Nice find man! Should give you many many years of service. Probably needs new timing belts though... at 76k they could be the original ones!
  6. If it isn't making any bad noises you're probably fine. It's hard to kill a manual transmission. Look at the manual for the car, it should say what to use. Or search around, I don't have a manual for my car so I searched around here to see what was recommended. Most important thing is to make sure you get a GL5 gear oil.
  7. In my Legacy I just have the stock jack and no stands, I'm not worried about anything serious happening with that car. But with my lifted GL, spirited driving, offroading, etc. Stuff is more likely to go wrong. So I carry tools, jack stand, etc.
  8. I'm gonna be doing this swap. I will probably hit the junk yard tomorrow afternoon if the weather holds out. I'll definitely take pics getting the harness and stripping it down. I'm also going to make a run-in stand for my ej22 because I got it through a weird deal in an unknown running state... So I can have running shots up pretty soon probably.
  9. I use that jack for one thing. Getting my car up high enough to get it on a jack stand. I have a jack stand in my car. So if I get a flat on the go I'd just jack it up and put a stand under. In my garage, same thing. I can't afford a nice hydraulic jack. If it fails all that will happen is the car falls back down onto the wheel. I'm not getting under my car held up by that, ever... That's why I have a stand in the car.
  10. You're lucky, my alt spiked in my Legacy, just a spike and the car actually shut off. It started right back up after pulling over and unplugging the alt, but it fried my gauge cluster.
  11. It would work. Yes. But it would be worth it to get the correct size. It's going to be there for a while, may as well do it right.
  12. Also, if someone is going to do this, I'll make it a bit easier. As you're looking at the back of the radio, the 2 pins on the right are radio output, and the 2 on the left are amp input. (the 2 pins that have the jumper thing going into them, it's obvious when you have it apart)
  13. Here ya go! I hacked Linux onto my iPod (like everything I own, wireless routers, printers.... etc). It doesn't need Linux for this to work. It's a pretty simple mod. Take the stopper thing out of the plug, it connects the radio output to the amp input. Amp input goes to the center of a DPST switch, radio output goes to one side, ipod output goes to the other. You could do a regular headphone input if you wanted, I made another custom thingy for my iPod because that way it can charge and turn on and off with the car, etc. It's pretty awesome. But that's a whole different mod and lotsa wiring, now I have a custom iPod input thing on my Legacy and my GL. And an iPod for each ... It's awesome Only weird thing is the radio still looks like it's playing (because it is...) when the iPod is inputting. The output from the radio just isn't going anywhere. There's probably a signal pin to change it to TAPE or something, out of the 4 pins I used, one other one is 12v, and then there are 3 more. Probably to display tape functions, but I've personally seen a tape player with that radio in a GL, and what's on the display doesn't really make any difference to me. I'm pretty happy with how it is.
  14. Does your blower still work on setting 4? The over-voltage could have fried the resistor block.
  15. I prefer the insert type to a heli-coil for spark plugs. You need to tap the new threads before inserting the thread insert. To get the correct length insert I just made sure I got one that was about the same length as the threads on my spark plug, but no longer. Just bring the plug to the store with you.
  16. All done with a toggle switch mounted on the radio bezel to change between radio and aux. I went to my pile of old broken stuff and grabbed a nice DPST switch off a security camera from the 70s... Pics when it gets light again.
  17. Yea, the speakers aren't the best. But whatever, the work alright. If I find a good deal I'll jump on it.
  18. I did some probing around and answered my own question. It's wicked simple. Maybe I'll do a writeup.
  19. I have napa crapdrive axles in my car. They're crap. My last one started clicking, I dunno, 200 feet up my driveway. The boot blew about 100 miles later, and it started vibrating wicked bad within the next hundred miles... And I wasn't even abusing them. My replacement is doing alright... I'm really sick of replacing axles though. I wouldn't use napa axles.
  20. I have the stock radio in my 89GL. I want to add an aux input to it, so I was wondering if anyone could supply me with the pinout of the little black connector on the back by the antenna wire (BTW, why isn't that removable?!). I assume that connector would go to a tape player, if my car had that option installed, so it must be a simple pinout to hack. Thanks for any info! Oh, and not to sound like a jerk, but. Please don't tell me to get a Dual Xwhatever or some other after market radio. The one in there works fine, has good enough quality to run 22 year old speakers, I don't want to buy new speakers and re-wire, etc. I like hacking things like this, and it looks like an easy project.
  21. I have used the insert things twice on my Legacy now. They worked awesome! Still running fine about 20k later. I filled the spaces on the tap with some heavy wheel bearing grease to catch the shavings. When I took it back out the grease was full of shavings. Not sure if any got in the cylinder.. It's just aluminum, it will burn off or get blown out anyway I guess... But I haven't had any issues with it. Performance or otherwise. It's going to be a hell of a lot easier on an ea81 than an ej22!!!
  22. Yea, sometimes stuff breaks on the go and there isn't any choice.
  23. I wouldn't get under a car held up by a jack. Period.
