That trick doesn't work so well when it's a FWD car... -
So I guess my ej22 swap has started... It's not gonna be till next summer I drop the motor in, but I may as well start a thread now for questions. I just got a free harness out of a 97 impreza, so phase 1 ej22. I have computer, etc. Good chance I'll be getting the engine with it as well, unsure of the running condition I'm going to design some system of running it before I drop it in the car. The deal is I pay for it if it runs well... Sometime next week I'm going to start stripping the harness down to just what I need to run the engine and cruise control. It has the control unit for it, so I may as well keep the wiring as well. In the mean time I'm going to be looking for the wiring diagrams. Maybe it's a bit early to start a thread now when the engine won't go into the car until next summer, but I'm going to spend the winter gathering parts so it can be a quick, easy, and clean swap when the snow goes away and my Legacy is back on the road. I can't stand messy/nasty wiring, so I'm going to take my time with making the wiring pretty.

In this guide you can see the 2 different types of bearings, the 3 piece and one piece ones. And it's perfectly fine to get the retainer ring out with a punch. And a mallet to get the old race out... Depicted here http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=112226

Grrrr...... Bad New Alternator!
987687 replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Fair enough. I wouldn't do it on a car with EFI. But a car that only has electrical needs for a fuel pump and running the coil is completely different. -
Haha, tack it together, it doesn't fit. Grind it apart, weld it slightly off, tack it together, repeat Nothing wrong with that method. hahaha

I always remove it from the top.... Now that you say something it would probably be easier from the bottom.

I've had some very good mechanics tell me never to do that, and one who had a system mess up from doing that once. Maybe it was already messed up I don't know .... I'd never do it. I said this would probably start an argument -
Been there, done that. I just drove mine home and rev matched gear shifts, I wasn't to far from home. I got a new cable from the dealer, I didn't want it breaking again so I didn't buy crap... It was worth that extra money. I still don't know why mine failed at 102k miles. Maybe it was routed wrong? That's a good way to kill the cable. As others have said, make sure you route the cable properly. Since mine failed at so low mileage I looked around for a good while at pics online to see how the cable is supposed to be routed, and after I found enough that were the same I did mine like that. It's a pretty easy repair, if you want a pic of how I have mine routed I can do that pretty easy.

I wasn't getting on your case about anything. Saying you shouldn't have dumped the car, or something. I was just stating that one doesn't need a brand new car to achieve perfection, that for some people on old rusty quirky car is perfection. To some, my cars are piles of junk and unfit for public display. To each their own.

My GL is better now than it is brand new... It has a better engine, more clearance, better transmission ...... etc. Perfection is what you make of something. For some people a brand new car is perfect, for some people a brand new car has a lot of problems because it isn't lifted with big wheels and a dual range transmission. Or however you want to look at it. For me my 96 legacy is perfect. It has been reliable for tens of thousands of miles of road trips, snow, etc. It's had problems, nothing huge, but it's better than stock with some upgrades I've done. Same goes for my GL, it would be useless to me as a FWD auto like it came new. You just need to figure out what's perfect for you in a car, and go find one that fits. It might be brand new, it might be 80 years old. Perfection in a car is different for everyone. Just my $0.02 on the matter.

The gauge reads volts, not amps. 18v is WAY WAY high, DO NOT RUN IT!!! You'll fry the electrical system. Also, I'll probably start another argument with this. But you should NEVER run with your battery disconnected. Very bad. -

For what it's worth... The alt in my 89GL has a sticker that says "IC REGULATOR BUILT IN" And I've never heard of an external regulator except on really old ea81 or maybe just the ones older than that. -
I've had to replace my HVAC control thingy in my legacy. First all the lights went out in it at the same time after a big bump (obviously not the bulbs..). Then the linkage from the slidy on the front to the cable broke about a week later. I just got one from a junk yard for about $15, put it in and was good to go. Some people paying over $200 for these?!?! HOLY CRAP! I could buy a good condition ej22 for that price...

Isn't the regulator built into the alt on ea82s? Especially by 87 -
When I did my disc brakes I cut the lines into the drum brakes (because they wouldn't come off...). I cut them to the correct length so that the rubber hose on the disk brake wasn't bent or stretched and flared the line. If you have access to a flare tool it isn't very hard.

Electrolysis and Voltage meter Question ??
987687 replied to Petersubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I wonder if it has anything to do with coolant leaks in second gen ej25 head gaskets... -
Does walmart really have the setup to copy chip keys? Many locksmiths now have the capability to copy the new chip keys. I know one near me just got a machine to do them. The dealer obviously can, but that'd be expensive. Although, you might need to get the actual key from the dealer if you want one that has the lock and unlock button in it.

Yep 96 is electric.
