Cool. My legacy was at 99,999 when I pulled into the parking lot for work last summer. So during my lunch break I drove it around until it turned over 100,000. And my legacy just failed inspection Rust on a back door. Tires are marginal, he said they'd fail if he was having a bad day..... And a torn steering rack boot. So off to a parts store it is and some wrenching I guess.

First day on the Brat!!!!!!

Invest in ratcheting box end wrenches. You'll curse every normal box end wrench you ever use afterwards. Why didn't you use a socket wrench with a extension to remove the exhaust bolts? You can get way more than a turn that way... anyway, nice read. -
 I don't know what's wrong with your car, but that made me laugh. Check the connections to the fan, and the connection to the temp sensor on the rad...

Just look where the distributor is. If it's on the front of the engine by the acc belt it's an ea81. If it's on the back of the driver's side head it's an ea82. Easier than trying to find the number, or clean it up if it's dirty and hard to read.

OK, Let's Nail Down This PURGE SOLENOID Thing

With the IAC unplugged at over 3/4 throttle my engine dies. Nobody else seems to experience that issue.... Is it indicative that something else major is wrong? -

Not if you hide the switches and buttons.... -
Everything is repairable... Are you a good welder? if not, it probably isn't worth repairing....

I may rip it all out to make it look less like I spilled my spaghetti dinner under my hood... I don't really care about the CEL much. It's on for a ton of stupid reasons. It seems the ea82 computer isn't overly happy about running the ea81. But it does just fine... -

The IACV is unrelated. And that is worth fixing. On my car, if I have the IACV unplugged it dies at or near WOT. It doesn't even stumble, just dies. So I'd advise fixing that. I too have the code for the purge thing, and for EGR. I've always thought it was weird because the EGR works fine as does the purge system. At least, from what I can tell. Everything goes on and off and opens and closes like it's supposed to... runs fine though. I fixed it by putting a piece of tape over the CEL. cheapest fix ever! -

black with white stripe is ground black with blue is acc black is run black with yellow is start no idea what the 5th wire is for. I didn't do anything with it and it worked fine. I actually have the harness off a legacy, same switch and harness plug. But only has 4 wires. But works just fine. So unless someone tells otherwise.... the 5th wire seems somewhat useless. -
I'm quite partial to my tent. It fits nicely in the back seat foot well, weighs about 5 pounds, and doesn't take up very much space. Along with that my sleeping bag, cooler, and box for firewood fit nicely in my canoe which goes very well on my roof. With that setup I can go camping anywhere on land or on water. I don't need no stinkin' tow-along for camping! But if you are going to get a tow-along, I'd suggest one that weighs less than 500lbs (and yes, all your crap in there is included in the 500 or less number). If you're towing much more than that for long distances your engine, transmission, axles, wheel bearings, etc probably won't like you much.

I have an 89GL (ea81 engine) that I tow somewhat often with. I've towed really big stupid things, but I keep it slow and take routes at times where I don't meet traffic. But for big things I generally take my dad's truck. It's designed to tow big things... But I do tow a lot of reasonably sized things. And as long as I keep what I'm towing under, say 700 or so lbs it's fine. I can keep up speed on most hills, alright acceleration, hill stops with lo range, and most importantly it STOPS decently. But my stopping decently has a lot to do with a rear disc brake swap and that I tuned up the brake system. New fluid, bled well, etc. If you're going to tow anything with any vehicle you want to make sure your brakes are in tip top shape. So for me, the combination of lo range, disc brakes, and the rugged bumper/hitch I welded up make towing smaller things safe and easy. Basically don't do anything really stupid, people doing stupid things is the reason stupid laws are made that hinder people who do things the right way.

The O2 censor would cause it to run crappy, but they usually don't fail intermittently. Since they're completely electric they usually either work or they don't. They don't sometimes work and sometimes not work like that. Seems like you have a heat related thing going on. So CTS makes sense, and IACV too, once it warms up a bit starts working.
