  1. Do you have a check engine light (CEL)? I had one lead me to a bad crank angle sensor causing my engine to shut down.
  2. Look in the offroad section about lifted camber adjustment. But it boils down to needing to move the strut tops inward to get rid of the camber. When I got my GL it was lifted with straight down blocks. Awful front camber and bad tire wear. What I ended up doing was drilling new holes in the top of the strut tower to fix the camber. And moving the whole strut top in. Now I have pretty close to perfect camber on both sites. I think one side is +0.1%. Or something negligible.
  3. The ea81 is an OHV engine so there isn't a timing belt/chain, or anything like that.
  4. ^^ good thoughts. I'd probably also leave the engine in the car until all the wiring is cut. Then plug the cut wiring harness into the engine to see if it runs. Is that silly, or a good idea from those who have done it?
  5. If my '96 legacy doesn't have a VSS signal the ECU goes into limp mode and won't let me rev the engine over 3.5k or something and retards the timing making it painful to drive... Not sure if the newer ones do that too...
  6. If you unplug the connector on the back of the alt you can be sure there's no electrical load. If you spin the alt by hand (no belt on it), do the bearings make bad noises?
  7. Do you still have AC and the AC belt? Because that does have a tensioner/idler, but the alt doesn't. It's the crank, alt, and PS on that belt. Start the car with the alt/PS belt off and see if the noise stops. If it does, it's probably the alt. If it doesn't stop then you have a whole other problem going on.
  8. I'm really tempted be all the talk on here about it...
  9. He could be cool and just keep it quiet I got my legacy when I was 18 and didn't want any loud exhaust on it ... And just recently spent quite a bit of time welding the muffler back on and fixing all the leaks so it's quiet again.
  10. I don't get much from auto parts chains besides little things. Fasteners, brake lines, basic tools, paint, etc. I don't usually get things that have very many moving parts because they generally suck. Unless they're a name brand part, in which case buying it at napa is stupid because it'll be 20% or more over what you pay buying it online or whatever.
  11. There's a good thread over on nasioc about what brakes fit on what cars. etc. Take a look here and see if they're the same. They probably are. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showpost.php?p=18085854&postcount=1
  12. Just get a subaru alt from a junk yard. You can probably get one cheap and they don't have many issues. Mostly brushes, cheap and easy to replace or have a shop replace. Return the napa alt again. I've had to return the same thing to napa a few times before because it kept being dead when I got it. I got an axle replacement that started clicking 3 days later. It still clicks months later .... heh. I'm not very amused though.
  13. I did a push button start on my GL a while back. It worked great, but I never installed it due to a free key switch... But I had 2 toggles. One to turn the car and acc on, and one to turn on just acc. Then it had a few relays. All power went through relays, not switches. Safer that way. It was fused, and had a relay so while I was pushing the start button it turned off acc just like when you turn the key to start. Cool you installed yours though! My system has just been scrapped for parts :/
  14. I've got those exact same tires! http://www.myspace.com/sandman660/photos/58459956
  15. Lots of us have. It isn't to hard. Look here for some examples. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=113276
  16. If it was me I'd fix it and maybe sell it, but for a lot more. I can do a wheel bearing and exhaust pretty easy, so just engine work I'd have to spend some time with. Depends if you can do the work yourself. If you can't do all the work yourself, probably your best bet is sell it. Good deal for both of you. If you can do the work, fix 'er up! She'll be worth much more.
  17. ^ good analogy. And all the 89 to 94 legacys didn't have auto belts, did they?
  18. When I do mine I'm gonna get the whole car. I'll get one that has usable parts for my legacy too.
  19. Yea, 95 it started. My GL had the auto seatbelts. They worked awesome too. No grinding, ran nice and smooth and never had a hitch. The only problem with them is that I absolutely loathe auto belts. So I swapped in manual ones. Want to buy some perfect condition auto belts with the auto belt computer? haha
  20. If I want to, or can wait for a part I'll usually get it online. But I'm sick of not having my legacy, or having it with a horrible exhaust leak so it was worth spending an extra $5 and just getting the correct part.
  21. Sitting at the dealer getting my seatbelts fixed under lifetime warranty. Got the correct gasket! Woo, $10 with my discount, so not bad. It was like $18 without.
  22. Getting parts from a dealer is nice if you want to pay. But I don't have a dealer very close. The closest one is about 40 minutes, and I won't go there anymore. So the next closest one is about an hour 15. But I get a 15% discount from them... so sometimes it's worth it.
  23. Thanks for the reassurance grossgary. I was kind of in a bad mood because I'd probably driven 50 miles going back and forth to napa trying to get the right part, and it still doesn't work right. The gasket is to short so it leaks, whatever, it'll get me to the dealer. It's just frustrating trying to get something done and not being able to find the correct parts to do it. And I'm glad I'm not the only one that has issues getting the right parts with brakes, exhaust, etc. This is what you get for working on your own vehicle, you're not paying someone else to spend time getting the correct bits and making it all work. I'm just glad the part of the pipe I welded up doesn't leak at all I try not to ask a million questions because I like to figure things out for myself. Or I'm in the middle of a project and just want it to be done so I don't want to wait for an answer... I can be kinda impatient sometimes. Anyway, thanks for all the replies.
  24. The only problem is that it makes the lid heavier and apt to close on your head while you're rummaging around looking for something
