You don't have to discharge the AC. You can unbolt the compressor and swing it to the side far enough to pull out the engine. The hoses have enough play. Same thing with the powersteering pump, you don't have to disconnect it, just unbolt it from the engine. Pulling the trans laying on the ground is sucky, I'd pull the engine. Also, it's going to be a lot easier to work on the back of the engine if you're not in an uncomfortable position under the car.

It should be fairly easy to turn by hand either way. If it's tight, yea, sounds bad. You shouldn't get much leakage. It's a remote reservoir with a hose off the bottom that goes to the top of the pump. I'd put a rag under the lines when you disconnect them, but you don't need a catch bucket. No special tools needed.

That picture is the top of the engine under the intake manifold (removed in that pic). The bottom was covered in goop... It's really something that's up to you, if it was me, I'd leave it alone. There are ample signs of headgasket failure LONG before it's a problem, and as you said, you can run a very long time with a bad gasket just keeping on top of coolant and oil levels.

Surely finding the proper brake rotors is easier and cheaper than doing an entire driveline and suspension swap.....

Ah, your english is good, I didn't realize you weren't in the US. Sorry about that. 2.7loyale turbo has had a bunch of parts shipped to him in Honduras, he's figured out the best way to have things shipped for a good price. Hopefully he can chime in here, I'm sure he can help.

It's not going to work, ever. Unless you swap EJ knuckles with 5lug hubs and get different wheels, those won't work. loyale brake rotors are cheap, just get the right part. It's ridiculous to swap every front end part around to make a set of used rotors fit.

You'll need transmission, front axles, driveshaft, rear: subframe, diff, axles, and hubs. It would be a fairly involved conversion, but not impossible. Just bolt on bolt off stuff. And I don't know if a fwd legacy has a carrier bearing support, you may have to weld one to your car. The FWD gl doesn't have it.

No, you can't. The GL/Loyale has a rotor that bolts to the back of the hub (and only has 4 lugs), so these will not work.

Should be the same as a legacy unit, looks the same to me. It's a fairly easy job. Take off the steering column plastics. There's a screw on the back of the cylinder that holds on the switch, take that out. Then just pull out the head eye bolts. I usually just drill two holes in them and remove them with a spanner bit

I honestly wouldn't run a 3.90 trans in an outback, the gearing is going to be too high. Get a transmission out of a legacy GT, outback, or forester. They're all 4.11. If it's a non-outback trans you'll get a high 5th gear for highway cruising, which is nice.

The timing belt has either been replaced, or is well overdue. If it's original, it'll be pretty obvious looking at it if you pull the driver's side timing belt cover. In 2002 they fixed the delayed engagement issue, but even so, when the car is cold shift it from D to R a few times. It should make the transition quickly, if it lags for a few second or two, walk away. Are there any service records with the car? Does the owner know if the work has been done? Timing belt and head gaskets are fairly expensive, I'd think they'd remember if that work was done.

Well the batt and brake lights come on when the alternator isn't putting out any power. If they're going off, that means it's momentarily working. I'd have the alternator tested. If it comes out fine, it's time to check your wiring.

So I'm a potato an didn't get pics of the pulleys, but here are the alternators. Here's the EA82 alternator: And here's my EJ (95-99 legacy) alternator: As you can see, the EJ shaft is quite a bit shorter. The EJ pulley has a high offset down, whereas the EA pulley has much less offset, therefor the shaft coming out of the alt has to be much longer. So it has nothing to do with one nut vs. the other, it has all to do with the pulley just doesn't physically fit. Did your ej alt look like my ea one?- 25 replies

All outbacks, foresters, GT models, and 2.5RS have the 4.11 ratio. Outbacks also have a shorter 5th gear. The L is gonna have a 3.90 ratio, you'd have very low RPMs cruising in 5th gear because you have larger tires than an L. You would need to change the rear end to a 3.90, and it would mess up your speedo.

Of course I forgot my camera with pics in the shop, but I tried to swap in a 95-99 legacy alternator today. Pulled the pulleys off (needed to use a puller, them things stuck on there HARD!). The ea82 pulley won't work on the ej alt.... The shaft coming out of the alt is shorter, and therefor not compatible with the ea pulley. Oh well.- 25 replies
