Reworking the tumblers
987687 replied to 92_rugby_subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you want all different locks, go to the junk yard and find a car that has a key. Take all the locks and swap them to your car. When I had to replace my ignition I re-keyed it to match the doors. I also re-keyed my trunk to match the doors (since not only was the tumbler broken, I never got the trunk key). It's pretty easy once you get the hang of working on locks. I should make a writeup of how to take apart the ignition tumbler, there's a nifty trick. -
Go to a subaru dealer. Hopefully if they don't have it, they can get one in 4 days.

I'd probably also change the timing belt. If it's leaking that much oil, the belt is probably covered. Oil breaks the belt down extremely fast, especially if it's already getting old and starting to slightly crack. The oil will destroy it. It's an interference engine, so you don't want to temp it to snap. Because it will...

Probably the cam seal leaking and dripping down the inside of the cover. That's pretty low, but if you wasn't run that long or hard, you may be clear. I'd change the oil and filter immediately though. The oil that was in there probably got pretty burned, may even have some metal from accelerated wear. Since it's coming out of the cover, it's probably nothing more serious than a cam or crank seal.

Right rear won't hold alignment.

Well, I loosened everything, adjusted, and tightened everything. Took it for a ride pretty fast over some bumps and through the woods a bit. Came back home, and it's seeming to hold. So I'll see how it goes... -

They're good for rallyx, and with good suspension and tires they handle pretty nice. Same goes for hondas and all the other ricer mobiles. -

So the more I look at the FSM page, the more confused I get... I need to decrease theta because I need more positive camber. So does that mean I essencially push up on the "outer trailing arm ASSY" (according the pic) to do that? -
It runs fine, idles fine, starts fine. It's never flooded or smells like gas. It's not leaking injectors. I got bad gas mileage on the last tank, but that's because summer people are starting to come to maine. They don't know how to drive more than 10 under the speed limit. And it pisses me off. So I abuse the skinny pedal...

Because STANCE I don't get it... merely relating what I've dealt with working at a shop. -
The first thing I do before even pulling the old engine is put a big note on the steering wheel "ODD OIL!", put tape over the ignition, and hide the keys under the matt so I actually have to put some effort into starting it. Bad things can happen at 1am when you finally get the engine in, and just want to test ride it.

It's also a royal pain in the butt trying to mount a tire that's considerably thinner than the rim. After dealing with that a few times while working at a garage, I started refusing to do it. It was a lot of VW crowd wanting sidewall stretch... sigh... -

Wheel bearing is good. Cone washer is fine, seals are good, no wobble. I replaced it a couple years ago. Trailing arm looks fine. It'll hold for a while, then slip. -

No. There are two gears. One on the crank, and one on the cam. It's directly driven off the crank, and therefor, turns the opposite direction. Stolen from Idasho's rebuild thread: The crank gear is hiding behind the flywheel mounting flange. -

After a certain year (no idea which one) they have hydro lifters. Mine is plugged into my ea82 FI system. So I have a FI hydro lifter ea81 in my car. And it's awesome -
Right rear won't hold alignment on my 89GL. 2" lift. In the last year I've replaced the rear tube and struts. They're not bouncy, bushings are nice. Bushings are good on the tube, trailing arms, etc. I followed the FSM page for doing the rear alignment (PITA). It works for me on the driver's side, but the pass side won't hold. The camber goes off. Top of the tire goes in, bottom goes out. I guess that's negative? I've taken the short trailing arm piece with the 3 bolts off. Cleaned up the mating surface really nice on both sides. Done everything I can think, but I can't get a damn alignment to hold. What's going on here?

Isn't that a bigass ugly SUV? It's mostly 2nd gen and up subarus, and american trucks in my area. I live in rural east bumblefark Maine. Thanks for the info on what size 6lugs to look for. 5.5" sounds like a lot, but I thought the pugs were less for some reason. I'll have to go measure my full size spare next time i have the trunk open. -

Ya, I'm going to try to find something similar size. I need a set of rims for DD/light offroad use, and a set of rims for rally tires. Which have to be 15", because that's what I have for rally tires. Tempted to drill the hubs and just ditch the pugs. Not only are they worth the price of about 2 sets of nice 6 lug alloys, I won't be stuck to a stupid lug pattern... Not sure how I feel about re-drilled wheels for high speed rally abuse. Those tires are heavy, and the car gets mucho abuse on logging roads... -

Ah, makes sense. So I want to retain the same back to front spacing ratio There's probably a proper name for that, but it makes sense to me. -

Thanks! I'll measure what my pugs are, and keep that number in mind when I'm junkyarding -
Hmm, interesting. Now that you mention it, I may have hit the governor the weekend before it started reading correctly again. I don't get why they put a 140mph speedo in these with a 112 governor, but the GT has a 120mph speedo and can go like 150.... Just making sure my speedo reads correctly, you know. Preventative maintenance.

'88 Subaru Gl-10 Axle specs

Have them do a 5speed swap while they're in there I'm surprised they're going to fix your car. I generally thought if you ended up with the wrong part and installed it, it was your problem if it messed something up. -
You can always pull the cover and count teeth on the gears.
