I would love the think that my temp sending unit is inaccurate. I don't know what is wrong with it. It stays on the standard temp for about 5-10minutes of driving then it starts to increase. Soon as I turn the heater on, it slowly decreases to normal temp again. If I turn off the heater while I'm driving, the temp starts to increase again. One day I wasn't paying attention to the temp, and after I parked my car, it started smoking. I think it was smoking from the radiator. I know it is not smart to do, but I open the radiator cap, and with big smoke, the radiator spitted out whole bunch of water. Good thing I wasn't in the way:lol: thanks Dan

Since I have been busy, I don't have time to take my take and fix the broken bolt that holds the thermostat house. Since I will be going to need new bolts once I take out the broken one, I went to Ace hardware and purchased strongest grade bolt, and also bought a biggest hose clamp. Right now, one bolt and hose clamp is holding the thermostat housing. Once I have more time, then I will fix it and try all the ways that were posted previously. I know the thermostat is working, but temperature increases above normal temp, so I decided to assume that increasing temp is due to the blown HG. Since I have an engine that I would like to get rebuild, and put it in the Brat later, I'm going to drive around with blown HG. I was wondering what could be the consequence of my action. Hopefully not to bad. thanks Dan

If I would like to go above 4/3, what is the process about doing suspension lift? How much of fabrication work do I need to do? Thanks
-
What I was saying was, if there could be any addition to lift the car after putting in pk lift. Like PK Lift(4" / 3") + 2" suspension lift? = 6" front/ 5" rear? Thanks Dan
-
If I would like to go higher than 4/3, without any fabrication works, what is the option for that? I was wondering if other mods can be correlated with pk lifts, such as the suspension lift. I know there is some board members who runs front springs from ea82 wagon, and rx torsion bar to get gain two more inches(I'm not sure if I'm correct with this), but also heards some storires about, using the springs in the front is bad for the axle? Any suggestion to overcome this problems? If it is possible, what extra aids does it need to run this mods safely? Thanks Dan

Brats, interesting
lepetitprince replied to Adam N.D.J.'s topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
When I was registering my 82 Brat, the lady was about to list my car as a truck, so I explained to her that it is a passenger vehicle, then she called the maneger and asked whether she should change it or not. She told me that listing the car as a truck is cheaper than listing as passenger vehicle. So I have truck license plate on my Brat:lol: I always thought passenger vehicle was cheaper in registration. It is true in someway though, only small pickups are cheaper than passenger and rest of the trucks' registration is more expensive. -
Thank you so much for so many advices, I haven't decided which method to follow with, but I will decide and post on this thread, also will post the result. Flowmasthered87GL: I do think that is another cause of overheating. One time before I got my water pump fixed, I overheated so bad that engine wouldn't start and had to call up my friend to tow it up to the shop. When I got new water pump installed, and drove around for awhile, from the exhaust, I smelled something sweet, and my friend told me I might have blown HG. Here is another question. ( sorry for asking so many questions) I have an extra engine, hydrualic lifter that is. Current engine isn't, I'm planning to rebuild and put mods on the hydrualic lifter engine, but I'm not sure when it will done, probably two to three month from now. Should I get new HG for current engine, or just drive it around until rebuilding is done? If you guys think I should get new HG, will it be okay if it is from ebay? I know those aren't great, but it will only be temporary solution, so I don't think I need those expansive OEM or OEM equivilant Thanks Dan

Hi all. I previously left a thread asking about how to get the rusted bolts out. Well, I did tried to turn the bolt back and forth, but I ddin't get much with it. So I decided to ask at the Shuck's, and they gave me this PB rust bolt loosener, and they also said this spray is the only way to get the bolt to loosen up. I combined to methods together; spraying the stuff on the bolt and tried to turn back and forth. It didn't feel so good when I was turning little by little, it felt like I was rather twisting the bolt, but not unscrewing it out. It finally broke off . Though the bottom bolt one came out easy. Now I have little piece of the upper bolt sticking out of the block that holds thermostat. It is so small that I can't get a good grip with a wrench and twist it out. I need help getting the out, or sell the the block if one of you guys have extra. It looks like it is interchangable.(Eyes of the newbie) Well, I still replaced the thermostat, but it is leaking quite a bit and seems like it is causing the temperature to rise. I have replaced almost all the parts that might cause the overheating: Radiator, Thermoswitch, Thermostat, Thermostat gasket, Water pump, and got to two of the fans to work(for the first time I saw them work at the same time)Some might say that is waste of money, and I should find the problem that causes overheating before getting new parts, well I need to change the parts later in future, so mind as well, get the new parts right now when I have money:lol: Anyways, I need some advices. Thanks so much Dan

Soo, the thread about the lift kits for the Brat in marketplace was closed, so I'm writing one up here to get more information on the kits from you guys. I'm pretty sure there are lot more kits than one from ozified, and I would like to open my eyes bigger and see what else is out there. Plus, I would like to spend less money on the lift and spend more money on rebuilding/putting mods on the engine I have. Sooo, name of the kit, price, and pros/cons would be great. Thanks so much Dan

Hi all. I have 82 Brat, I guess its special year and manufacture did some funky things to it. I have two fans, one of the connects to thermoswitch, and the other was connected to thermoswitch but never got it to work. Even with all those tactics we know for 82 Brat. With headlight off, a/c on or off, all those things, I never got it to work. So I decided to hard wire it. With little switch the fan works even the engine is not on. So assuming both of the fan will work, one day when engine was hot, I checked under the hood, guess what, only hardwired one was working. Found out later that wire wasn't connect to the thermoswitch. Soon after I connected back the wire into the thermoswitch, hardwired fan stopped working. So I pulled out the wire from the thermoswitch. played with hardwired fan, and got it to work again(caused my half of my fingernail from my ring finger); pull out the fan wire from the thermoswitch and played with switch on the hardwired fan, and when it was working, I plugged back in the fan wire into the thermoswitch. Today I installed new thermoswitch, plugged in the fan wire, and now guess what, my hardwired fan doesn't work. What I dont understand is that, my hardwired fan has its own relay, so I don't think there ins't any limitation of when should the fan work or not, but everytime, a wire from the other fan is connected to the thermoswitch, the hardwired fan doesn't work, and vice verse, when hard wired fan is working, the other fan that is connected to thermoswitch doesnt work even at its specific engine temperature. I would like to understand why this is happening. And thank you in advance, and sorry for confusing questions and explanation. Thanks Dan

Hi all. Today I received thermostat, thermostat gasket, and thermoswitch from subaruparts. Since my friend is out in a vacation, I decided to work by myself again. Took some time to look through FSM and Haynes repair book on replacing thermostat section. I decided to replace the thermoswitch first. Un-hooked the top hose from the radiator, then unscrewed the bolts that holds radiator from the body. With out draining its coolant, I tilt one side of the radiator toward driver side so I can reach down and replace the thermoswitch. Everything went smooth untill when I tried to unscrew the bolt that holds thermostat cover. I got about one and half turn and it wouldnt go further. I know if I force it I might break the bolt so I just there. screw back one and half turn and left. Of course I tried to some oil to loosen the bolt but that wouldnt work either. I need some advice how to un-screw that bolt out. What kind of tool I need or some kind of know-how skill. Thanks Dan

Well...my Brat's cigarrete light socket stopped working. So I purchased an aftermarket socket from Shucks for $10.00(things are soo expensive these days) Decided to fix it by myself, since my friend(carfreak85) is on vacation. Took some time looking through wiring diagram in the SM, I started taking parts out. When everything was put together again, I found out the socket wasn't working again. Took everything out and slowly put everything back together....Yay it works...but there were two small black spare screws left...Can't figure out where it came from..sigh...hopefully nothing too important...decided to go test drive around the neighbor but I found out that my dash light wont come on....Since it was late at night and I was exhuasted from a Brat project by myself, I'm going to take everything out again and put together even slower than last time tomorrow morning and hopefully I will encounter spots for those black small screws. Thanks Dan

So, I found out that my guage is working properly. I was driving around the town today and noticed temperature needle going up so I turned on the heater and it didnt go down much but it didnt go up either. (oh by the way, I fix the hard wire fan with switch. Cost me a half of my nail from ring finger, but now other fan that was working yesterday with thermoswitch connected stopped working...sigh...whats wrong with my fans) So now what could be the problem? radiator? no I just got a new one. Hopefully it will get fixed with new thermostat.. Thanks Dan
-
Then what about the fan problem? Why was one hardwired stop working once the other started working? Is there a limitation on the relay or something that stops from fans working together? And the fan which is working right now turns bit slow, I was curious whether it is effecting the temperature of the engine? Thanks so much and sorry for asking to many questions

Hi all. I have lots of follow up questions on over-heating. So while ago I posted a thread about my little Brat overheating...took it to chevron to get an estimate to fix the problem(well actually I just wanted them to figure out my engine problem and then once they do figure out, I was going to fix it with my friend) the problem was my waterpump, and they ended up fixing it without me authorizing it, and I argued and got out with free waterpump...hehe well so I thought they fixed the over-heating problem, but once in awhile, the needle likes to climb up little, but not too high..So I listened to borad people's advice and bought a new radiator...during the install, my friend and I decided to hard wire one of the fan.(wasn't working with thermoswitch) With switch I can turn on and off even when my engine off. But I noticed that the other fan that was working before stop working... Since I'm novice with fixing cars, it took me long time to figure out that one of the wire wasn't connect to thermoswitch..So the fan that was working in the beginning started working, but my hard wired fan stop working....weird....Well now my little Brat goes high temperture after 10 minutes of driving...Too high, almost at the peak...With new radiator and one of the fan working, it gets high temperature...I decided to order to thermostat, its gasket, and thermoswitch from subaruparts, it hasn't arrived it yet but I would like to buy new electric fans. I was wondering what is the good speed of the fan(like 1200 to 2500 cfm?) higher speed requires bigger fans like 16" and I'm not sure how I would put in on a radiator with height of 13 1/8. I'm planing to rebuild and put mods on my engine so I guess it requires faster fans to cool it faster??? haha that would be a stupid question of a day for me. Lastly one more question...sorry for asking lot of questions...currently my a/c is not working...it is getting somewhat hot here...I'm sorry for whining with high 80's to those of who lives in desert area. But i would like to fix my a/c before it gets any hotter. It is really hard to drive with heater on when its like almost 90(to lower to temperture down). A/C blows air but not cold...what new parts I need to fix this? Thanks so much for reading somewhat long questions...Thanks Dan

Need help with rebuilding Engine
lepetitprince replied to lepetitprince's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Any other mods to increase the power? Thanks Dan -
Some of you guys already seen my thread about me wanting to buy a hydraulic lifter engine. Well I did get one from board memeber(thanks Austin) and I would like to get it rebuild. I know I will be saving big bucks if I do it myself, but I never have done it before and I thought it will be better for the engine if I get it professionally done. My friend told me that if I provide the engine rebuilders with mods that I would like to put on the engine, they will do it during the process of putting back the engine together. Here comes my questions. I would like to know what kinds of mods I can put it on the engine to make it better, better I mean, stronger, not necessarly faster because I'm not looking for speed, rather I'm looking for more torque I guess, for offroading. I have 82 Brat, and seeking to make the little beast into bigger beast(BYB lift kit comes after rebuilding...hehehe) Just like Shadow said...we should share all the knowledges we know...after all sharing is caring Thanks Dan

My engine is dying, need help!!
lepetitprince replied to lepetitprince's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Then, what would cause the rattling noise everytime I'm in high speed? -
So my engine is already dead or close to being dead. Recently I found out that something was leaking from the front part of the engine. I'm not sure where exactly it is from, but it looks like it is from the water pump. My radiator is not working properly and everytime I put in gallon or more of water, it dries out or it drains out. Last 3 days without knowing, I basically drove my brat without any coolant in the radiator. I know it is one of the worst thing I can to my engin. Everytime I start the engine, it shakes badly and idles low, then it dies. Also while I'm driving, everytime I give gas, it rattles, not sure what is rattling but certainly I don't like the sound out it. If you know what I'm talking about please tell me what to do. Whether is fixable or not, and if it is fixable, what I need to do and which parts I need for it. Thanks Dan
