that is so it doesn't get broken when tightening it down. sounds like you have a plugged catalytic converter. I had a 98 forester that did this. occasional P0420 and a sort of cyclic bucking, especially under load. the more load or the more I put my foot down, the worse it was. It started out very occasionally, then after a while became more frequent. I pulled the cat off and the "comb" inside was melted and blocking about 3/4 of the flow.

Perhaps, one of the lifters is hanging up and holding one of the exhaust valves open slightly during combustion, eroding the valve seat until compression is gone? Stupid chinese scooters I work on do this all the time as they require 1500 mile valve adjustments and people run them until there is no compression left.

if it was super nasty, your solenoids are sticking. The proper course of action is to replace the trans with another used one because of the varnish has eroded the walls of the valve body. Good used ones can be had for just a few hundred dollars or less, just get one from a wrecked car or JDM. You may be able to get away with a valve body swap but if the friction material in the clutches are affected, it's just a band aid. Drive it around and maybe it will clear up. Subaru recommends a pan drain and fill every 30 to 60k miles.

When i was in auto tech school, we had a seafoam day and the fire department showed up because there was so much smoke that they thought something was on fire -
Best options are a 96-99 single port ej22. from an automatic. bolt in and go. or if you want to do a little converting, you could use a 1990-1995 dual port ej22 and bolt on one of these to the cat http://www.ebay.com/itm/STAINLESS-SS-RACING-MANIFOLD-HEADER-EXHAUST-97-05-SUBARU-IMPREZA-2-5L-RS-EJ25-NA-/190652875222?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c63cc01d6&vxp=mtr Make sure it's from an auto because the manuals don't have an EGR valve. The exhaust is the only difference between 95 and 96. Just swap on your intake so the wiring plugs in.

yeah, its another used bottom end, and the junk yards around here are just about clapped out. No good heads that I have found. The motor I just built for my wife's car that went interferance, I used 300k 95 heads. I lapped the valves, replaced the valve seals, and decked the heads. she runs great but pickins are slim if you know what I mean. AND, the last JY 22 that I bought was toast. Seemed to have compression, but it was apparently the lack of oil that had scarred the cylinder walls.... 105k and it was wrecked... LOL...

i live in texas. 2.5's don't fall out of trees around here. I don't want to rebuild it really, but I have exhausted the junk yards of any good engines, and NO outbacks, foresters, 95-99 legacies, or anything else with a 2.5. I have only seen one recent outback lately and the motor was toast. I could stick a phase 1 ej22 in it but I still don't have that kind of bank around.
