cross country trip, need emergency contact info.
operose replied to operose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks Tom! we leave this thursday morning bright and early! I can't believe the amount of people that have offered their assistance so far! -
please see my thread in the meet/greet. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?p=318085#post318085 sorry about cross-posting between forums but it seems as though not as many people read meet/greet and this is where I spend most of my time. just trying to get this out to as many people as possible

my girlfriend and I are driving across the country in my '91 legacy wagon, and, well, we're not quite sure if we'll make it or not (keyway is buggered on crank pulley and sprocket that turns timing belt because previous owner did not torque down crank pulley bolt... it turned out without resistance using 3/8" ratchet and socket.... keyway is twice as big as it should be. we added lock-tite and torqued down to 100ft-lbs and hope it will make it) so what we're looking for is people along the way that could provide assistance should we need it for anything. our tentative route is new york, through NE pennsylvania, through Ohio, indiana, illinois, iowa, south dakota, montana, oregon, california, back through to colorado and then basically taking the same route back home. if you're anywhere near this route, please let me know how I can get ahold of you if we're stranded beside the road with a broken subaru, I'd much appreciate it I'll also put a post in the old gen as that's where I usually hang out. if mods don't agree they can delete.

Northern New England/NY,etc. Meet???
operose replied to moosens's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
spam worked for sure... pop-ups when you login... anyway, september will probably be good for me, will have xt6 up and running nicely by then hopefully... gf and I are doing cross-country road-tripping thing in the legacy until late august and she has to be back for school in early sep. for sure so we'll be back on this coast by then... keep me updated, I'll be checking the board occasionally in the travels -
bad bearings. make sure you buy from a reputable bearing manufacturer... I bought rear wheel bearings for my yamaha blaster 4wheeler one time, and they were gone in less than a week. and when we took them out? there were no needles left in the bearing.. they had all shredded and turned to dust. these are sealed pregreased bearings. they were marked "made in china." we went and bought good bearings, never had another problem

Why do people rely so heavily on compression braking?
operose replied to markjs's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well, I'll throw my opinion in.... I'm driving a jeep right now that my dad bought brand new off the showroom floor, and it's got 220k miles on it. Dad drove it 110 miles a day to work and back.. and he's a "downshifter" then about a year or two ago, dad bought an 80's audi, and let my older brother drive the jeep for a year.. he is also a "downshifter" and, when I got in an accident in my xt6 last fall, the jeep was passed to me.. ALSO A DOWNSHIFTER... well, the clutch has never been replaced. and the brakes have only been replaced ONCE in the jeep's 220k mile life. (they need to be replaced again soon, but I downshift, so I don't need them very much ) -
How many times have you rebuilt your oil pump?

does anyone know if these are the same HLA's used in ER27's? I thought I remember people paying like $12 for these suckers -

yeah.. early march a friend asked me to bring my jeep back in the woods and pull out his friend because I was the only one he knew with 4x4... I ended up driving 6 miles down a 4 wheeler trail with 1.5' of snow on it, and then I got to the trail the kid was on. he was at his parent's camp, and attemtped to pull off the trail to turn around. unfortunately for his parent's brand new jeep grand cherokee, the snow was too soft off the side, and the kid got stuck but good. he was about 2500' down the trail from the beginning, and there was no way to turn around once I got to him. I ended up backing down the trail to where he was stuck, the back of my jeep to the back of his daddy's grand cherokee off the showroom floor the week befo'. grabbed tow-strap... look around on cherokee, and there's no tow points needless to say I hooked it around either the kid's rear diff or a strut mount, and then we yanked on that sucker... we had to yank on it so hard to get out we had a tow-strap that was broken up into little bits when we were done.... I haven't really seen him since then so I dont' know if he needed an alignment afterwards or what, but there was literally nowhere to hook a tow-rope on that thing, either suspension or rear diff

yes, are the mounting holes for the stock bumper strong enough even with grade 5 bolts in them? the holes could always rip out and that'd be a shame... maybe weld in some 1/4" plate steel around the holes? not knocking your setup as I think it's awesome, just throwing out different POV like usual

EGR location?
operose replied to Midwst's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
I was reading something like this earlier, but I seem to remember it being more along the lines of all ej22's had EGR's, and phase 1 ej25's had EGR's, but not the phase 2 ej25... I think it was in someone's post about how easy it would be to put a phase 2 ej25 in their phase 1 ej25 car to prevent possible headgasket issues. sorry my memory is poor and this post was probably a waste of typing time -
your daughter's car is way nicer than mine, no fair

sorry, there are constantly homeless people walking around my small town picking the cans/bottles out of the trash... we have a horrible economy, so I'll have to spend $0.20 on my pop-can, which pretty much ruins my paycheck! -
my mother has had MS for a few years now, she found out right after she got done with chemo for her breast cancer... and I must say that there is almost nothing that makes me happier than you fellows going out and busting up your subarus in the name of raising money for a cure. my hat is off. and I'd also like to thank all the poor guys driving jeeps.. I drive one every day and I know how hard it is

you say it's losing water.... any clues where it's losing it to? does it look like there's a visible leak somewhere, or could it be going into the engine? -
doesn't sound like it would be illegal here in the states, then
-
same as taking rear hatch off a 3dr?I thought I'd seen pics of someone in the states with a 3dr that had no back hatch... I know it's legal for me to drive my jeep without the top completely, but that might be apples and oranges because it has a factory installed roll cage

why wouldyou buy an allwheeldrive car if you only want it during the winter? I hate to be mean, but you might as well have bought a 1992 ford explorer with electronic-button-controlled 4x4 for all of your "I only need two tires spinning at a time" needs *edit - I am in no way condoning the use of a ford explorer as transportation
