EJ22 Brat Swap, couple questions for those who have done it
Jibs replied to 86BRATMAN's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
So after reading up on the EJ swap, it seems that after enlarging the motor mount holes, the engine should be able to just drop in right? Not a whole lot of other fab work to actually FIT it then? Just a whole bunch to make it run? -
Where can I get freezeplugs? EA81
Jibs replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Might try a specialty nut-n-bolt place in your area, or the dealership. I had to go to the dealership for those things for one of the Brats. It took them a while to find a couple but they did it. -
And the Sammy steering box and steering parts? How'd that work out, I know it's kinda tough getting the front end to work with the solid axle.

EJ22 Brat Swap, couple questions for those who have done it
Jibs replied to 86BRATMAN's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Ok so I might have found an EJ for the swap, with only 1 minor problem. I don't know if its an obdI or obdII engine. The owner of the engine (not in the car and he can't remember what year it came from). I have a thread going in the new gen forum as how to tell between the two. One member suggested that it may be all right to use the obdII engine with the obdI wiring harness. Anyone know if this is correct? I want to make sure I do this right the first time. -
For the stock Clutch set up you need the EA81 flywheel and the EA81 pressure plate and the EA82 clutch disc. I got all the parts seperate from autozone for about 150$. Use the Ea82 starter, but remember to use a lock washer in between the starter and the transmission, the ea82 starter is like 90 thousands bigger. Which wiring? I think most of it bolts in, I had to cut the speedo cable, the plastic threaded part, a little when putting it to the 5speed, the ea81 is a little longer. But everything else worked fine if I remember. Hope this helps.

Has anyone tried swapping an 82 grille with lights, turn signals, 3rd eye, and such onto a later model Brat? I'm just worried of the turn signals, wondering if theyre just plug the wires up or if there's splicing involved. Thanks. I wanna go from this: To This: Thanks msslgecko!

Why does every single offroad topic in a subaru forum turn into debates on Jeeps and Yotas these days?

EJ22 Brat Swap, couple questions for those who have done it
Jibs replied to 86BRATMAN's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
I'll be using the P/T D?R 5 speed. I already got what I need to make it fit from Bratsrus1 (Great Kit! ) So I know it fits in. We raised it in from the bottom. I just wasn't sure as to how wide the EJ was. I plan on mating the engine and tranny together, then putting the crossmembers on OUTSIDE the car, then jacking up both of them from underneath. -
EJ22 Brat Swap, couple questions for those who have done it
Jibs replied to 86BRATMAN's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
I have a question about installing an engine and transmission at the same time into an ea81 Gen 2 Brat. I want to do the Ej22 swap, and was wondering that if I was to install everything outside the car (Put the engine to the tranny with the clutch, putting the engine and tranny onto their crossmembers and putting the lift kit on) could you LIFT the whole setup into the car from underneath, all together? Or do you have to drop everything in from the top? I figure it might work using 2 or 3 jackstands and 2 or so floor jacks to lift it up and into the car crossmembers and all. I'm worried the EJ may be too wide though. Has anyone ever done this or know anything of it? Thanks. -

Wow, I don't even recall creating this thread way back when. I guess I shoulda done the swap then and I'd be happy now. I was wondering on what kind of Higher compression pistons are available for the ej22?? -
So I picked uo another subaru today... and it seems to have a few problems. It's an 84 Auto, hydro lifter ea81, carbed, 174xxx miles. It really sputters uphills almost to the point of dying. It runs great in reverse and going downhill. It sat for a while before I drove it home, I am going to start with draining the tank and putting fresh gas in and replacing the fuel filter, but what would cause the sputter? Thanks a bunch.

Not me. Swapping transmissions was the hardest thing I did to my Brat, I am not looking forward to doing it again when I get the new lifted Brat going.:-\

It's when you cut some of the bed off of a vehicle, to shorten it. creates less overhang for offroading. Look at Post #10 by Skip. See the white Brat that's shorter than normal? That's it.

If you're not getting damage, then you're not wheelin!

I'm in. Would it make sense to upgrade anything else in the axle while you're at it? Maybe see about getting a higher angle cv mad as well?

Here's my best: And a Jeep in the same spot after I told him I had run the line.

I want to do an EJ swap in the future, and I was wondering if it would be possible to have a painless wiring kit made to work with it? I was looking at product # SUM-890021 from summit.com Is there anything in the harness that would conflict with it? Anyone ever tried anything like this? Thanks for the help and opinions. EDIT: This would be a swap into an ea81 Brat.
