Thanks for the good words on my swap. My brat is an 83, so its not the same as your brat as far as the swap is going to go. Zefy is the guy to talk to you when doing your swap, that guy is getting things done as far as Gen 1 swaps go. When swapping out rear ends, yes, most people are going with a limited slip rear end. Unless you end up with a Full Time 4WD transmission from an 87-89 RX you will have to swap out the limited slip unit and put it into the 3.9 rear end you have in the brat. All (Pre 199x whatever) subaru lsd's came only in a 3.7 ratio and all brats/hatches/wagons are a 3.9 ratio. As far as the swap goes, do as much research as you can and then dive in. I wish I can say I am planning this swap as well, and it might happen, but I need to get these other cars running first. Good Luck!

RX Tranny Teardown (and rebuild?) WITH PICS
Jibs replied to The Beast I Drive's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thats about what they are. Maybe a *tad* more than others, but after looking for gears for the scout (~250$) its reasonable. Good luck on the swap, I am also watching this thread closely. -
I agree. When I bought my first soob, I didn't know A THING about mechanics. Everything always seemed so complicated and hard to work on. Then I just figured out everything was just nuts and bolts. And you start doing small things and gradually start working up the ladder until you're not only replacing parts with ease, but you're retrofitting newer parts onto your older car.

brumby/brat 5 lug conversion.....wheel backspacing?
Jibs replied to LPGsuperchargedBrumby's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Yeah, I can get more info for you later this weekend (I'm not home at the moment) but yeah I'm running stock legy rims. Don't know the tire size at the moment, but it doesn't seem like they'll rub, its close though -
I tried searching, but between the dialup service and the wildcard issue its easier to ask. Im replacing the trans in my 86 hatch with one from an 82 wagon. The trans on the wagon has the smaller clutch and flywheel. The splines on the disc match up between the two but I'm worried on the size of the flywheel fitting the 82 trans, is it possible to use the bigger clutch on the earlier trans? Thanks.

Not much going on with the Brat, I got my fans hooked up, the third eye on, and am in the process of putting the chrome bumpers on. Its still missing, I have to get a friend of mine over and see whats wrong with it. i just haven't been motivated to work on it any more. I DO need to get it done before winter hits though.

i haven't figured that out yet. I was hoping to get it to drive down the street to the pavement but so far I am still having troubles getting it to start. It was WAY off when I installed the knuckles and stuff, and we adjusted it so that it looks as straight as its going to be for now, but I am surwe its going to need spme sort of alignment before i drive it a lot. As of now I swapped out the IAC and it didn't seem to do a whole lot. The next thing I will do is get a short video of it and what it does and throw it up on youtube so that we can diagnose it.

I used the ea81 control arms reamed a bit to use the xt6 ball joint. Haven't gotten a chance to work out the front axle issue as of yet. I will be running in RWD for the time being. I am looking into seeing if Rockford CV can build me custom axles.

Here is what I've spent my summer working on: Details: 1983 GL Brat EJ22 from 90 legacy RX FT4WD Transmission 5 lug swap using xt6 front knuckles, 93 impreza AWD struts, xt6 rear bits Here's the solenoid for the RX tranny - It IS easier to hook up than I thought. I had to see ho Dave did it to make sense of it though. This pic shows what was done to the top portion of the impreza strut to make the ea81 top hat fit. We had to grind a flat spot on the threaded part and it seems to work real well. Everything went in real smooth, just a minor problem with the adapter plate not matching all the way up (Not anyone's fault, I got the first ever prototype from a friend of mine) and everything else went in real well. I'm still having issues with it running smooth, but we think it could be a vacuum leak and its been too cold and poopy for me to get motivated enough to get out there and get it done.

Here's mine: (FINALLY got a new camera) Everything went pretty smoothly, I only had to extend the power steering lines a little to make it fit from the pump to the hard lines in the last pic. All the other PS lines were bent enough out of the way to make them not hit anything. I also had some port and polish work done to the heads.
-
I tried an ea82T pump and then an xt6 fuel pump and now another ea82T pump.
-
I'll try looking. Thanks for the input. Its been getting cold lately and I've been wanting to spend less and less time outside.

So I've swapped the ej into my brat and it starts and idles ok. Kind of a rough idleat first then its great. Sometimes sputters and dies. Whenever I try to give it ANY gas, it dies. I thought it was something in the tank as it was real dirty and old gas was sitting in it fo a while, but its clean now and the same thing happens. I havereplaced the pump twice now and am on the third one so I don't think thats it, maybe the lines are clogged? Anyone else have any similar issues?

There's 2 white rx coupes in the carson yard right now, but both seem to be missin the trannies, lsd's, body kits and brakes. Weird.

Any advice or things to look for if I'm going to take apart an rx FT4wd tranny to swap the stub shafts over? Which stubshafts should I use? I have access to 3 4speed d/r tyrannys from various wagon's/hatches etc and I have an auto transmission lying here as well. Any of them work? Anything to look fior? Thanks.

I've got one like it with jackmans and an a-bar on it. Not QUITE in as nice shape, but its real straight. Mine has the original 4 wheel drive cursive decals along the sides as well. man I need to start woreking on that brat too...
-
I thought the rear was the easy part. What are you doing about the front?
-
Ditto. Was looking forward to seeing your rig there. I didn't make it with the Brat, I ended up having fuel issues, and I am in the process of removing and cleaning the tank now. I hope it works out, great job on the rig!
-
Not yet. Still working on it. This is plan Z.
-
Thanks. I was wondering if I had to have the center locked or not.
-
Thanks a bunch. That helps a lot.

Can you run an rx FT4WD tranny in Rear Wheel Drive without harm or no? has anyone tried it? Pro's/Con's?

Nevada Meet Weekend of July 25th
Jibs replied to Jibs's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
When we do yours, I'll make sure to be sick that weekend. Just kidding, I'm glad you're feeling better. -
That was another thing I ws looking at, but the legacy struts are taller than ea81, so either the lego springs need to be cut, or some other springs might be needed.

There's a BUNCH of legacies, a couple of outbacks/imprezza's 2 xt6's, and only a couple of gen1's. I might want to go to carson at some point.
