I have a '00 Imprezza Outback Sport (2.2L 5-spd) My CEL comes on VERY frequently, it occasionally goes off after a few starts, but always comes back on again once the engine is warmed up. I have also noticed a decline in gas mileage. from about 29 consistently down to 25 and below. all using regular 87. I have tried MMO and Injector cleaner to no avail. (p.s. i do maintain my tire pressure, and oil changes) Could the two problems be related? Do I just need a tune up? I just passed 70K miles. I did have the diff and gear oil changed at about 65K when i had to have a wheel bearing replaced

I found out what it was at this site http://home.earthlink.net/~opiewho1/subaru_obd2_codes.htm its a pretty good resource. Anyway my problem was an Idle Control system malfunction. I did notice it ideling a little high. but once it warmed up it was fine. I had started the car and turned it off this morning before it warmed up, and the CEL tripped when i started it back up a little while later. It was cold here this morning so i can see how this could have temporarily caused a system problem. anyway it is fine now. so thanks for reading my post.

I got a CEL code P1507. The reader only said Driveable -undefined code-. A friend of mine works at a Mitsu dealer and he pulled it for me. but he doesnt have the codes for subes. He erased it and the CEL didnt come back on when i re started. But i still want to know what it is. My warranty is VERRY close to being up so if somthing is going to go wrong i want to know so i can get it corrected.

I have noticed an increased amount of black carbon build up on my exaust tip. This is my first subaru, and i have had it about 4 months. I have a really short commute so i only put 2K miles on it so far. Anyway. i am wondering if this build up is an indication of needing a tune up. My 2000 out back sport is non turbo, and to be honest it is pretty slow. a little weaker then i had expected. It is slow off the line, and hesitates if i give it heavy gas already at speed. So here are my thoughts. Is the carbon causing performance problems because i put so few miles on my car at any time, so it never gets really hot enough to burn it off? Maybe i just need new plugs? (it has 50K on it so probably still original) If i change plugs should i also change wires? I already did air, oil anf fuel filters. not much affect.

Have you thought about 15inch rims for snow tires? just saying because they are a little cheaper, and easier to come by with our bold pattern. also the tires are cheaper. since theyre not pretty tires why have pretty rims. look at stock impreza wheels, any model below the RS should have steelies and lots of folks switched to 16s and sell the old ones on ebay.

I know this topic has been beat to death on this message board. That is why i want to revisit it one final time. People seem to feel very strongly about their plugs and wires, so it has been difficult for me to search the old posts and find an actual answer. Now please lets try to be civil, and each give a brief description of what plugs and or wires we use, and why. please include how you gap them, and what motor you have I am mainly concerned with what to use for my '00 2.2L non turbo. but all others are welcome to share.

can you suggest the best method for finding out what speed to match? I suppose just keeping an eye on speed and revs. is there any advantage to doing this on my '00 OBS with 48K miles? I just put in a short shifter too, which lets me switch a lot quicker, so the engine doesnt lose as many revs between.

So i got my new short shifter on ebay and installed it this weekend.. the car is a 2000 outback sport. the install went okay, except there were no instructions with the new part so i had to figure it out as i went along. the only tough part was the ball and socket joint. the bottom of the shifter has a ball and it rests in a urathane locking socket. its fairly easy to pull the old one out, but it is a major pain to get the new one in. you need to use a little leverage. if anyone is curious i will go into detail about how i ended up doing this. Sofar no probelems with the shifting, it is much shorter, but the sensation is not as soft as before. I attribute this to the point where the old shaft attached to the linkage, it had urathane bushings. The new one is all metal with roller bearings. The only problem i have so far is when my RPMs get above 2500 i get a very loud buzzing noise from the shaft itself. i believe it is from the vibration causing a buzz at the point the linkage meets the shaft (metal on metal as i said before). I will try to remidy this by installing some urathane washers. i expect this will solve the problem.. Does anyone know if it is safe to use axil grease on urathane, thats all i have in the tool box right now? or should i get something different? All in all it went well. Sorry no pictures, but my digital's batteries are dead. I would be happy to go into more detail if anyone wants to hear it. the drive with the short shifter is great.. much quicker shifts = less speed scrubed between shifts = faster & better gas mi. we will have to see how much better the gas mi is, i doubt its enough to even calculate over a short time. but the wife need not know that.

I feel ya.. i love the people on this board they know more then I ever will about mods. But it is easy to think everyone has the same ability to do them, when some of us dont have the time or the money to do engine swaps. But they are all good people, and give the best advice i have ever gotten. Anyway there are definetly things you can do, that are often overlooked as performance upgrades. usually you stick them on a vehicle that is already humming. but alone they can help quite a bit. Two easy bolt ons i have done are a simple cool air intake. and a short throw shifter. Both take no longer then 30 min. and are very cheap. and both improve gas mileage, and the cool air gives better HP and throttle response. and the short shifter gives the sensation of more torque b/c the engine doesnt spool down as much between gears. if you have a manual trans that is. if you have an auto there aint much you can do with shifting.. Also you should look into nice alloy rims. the lower the weight, the less rolling resisatance = better pickup and lower break useage. nice clean filters all around, are the best advice you can get though.. I have also found that a good wash and wax job makes me feel like im going faster.. try that one, it works for me when im contimplating dropping $3k on mods that i cant afford. Best of luck.

Can some of you give me some web address to look at off roading subarus? I am looking into building one. But i like to do my homework first, see what platform and upgrades i want. Maybe find an already lifted one for sale.

I agree potenza's quality has really gone down. now that there are like 150 different ones you can get, and the price went up. stay away. there is no rule with tires that you get what you pay for. dont skimp too much, because quality rubber does cost a bit mroe then junk, but just because one cost a few bucks more doesnt mean its any better. really check the reviews!

POLL: Where do you shift

Like the RX7? did you add it? where do i find one? -
I had the same problem when i bought my 2000 outback sport. I drove a Jeep before where you did have to push the clutch to the floor to shift. but after a couple of months you get used to the new one and learn how far to push it. find the point where the clutch fully disengages and then push it just a fraction farther. this is where you need to be to shift. downshifting is just a fraction farther then that. it is tough getting used to, but youll get the hang of it. the only problem i have run into now is that the clutch only needs to be pressed so short that it is my arm motion slowing down my shifts. Im putting a short throw shifter on as soon as i get one. they are cheap on ebay. that should take care of that. Bust rest assured your not alone. I think Subaru clutches are the strangest i have ever driven.

thats very cool. So you had to run feed a return hoses under the body from the radiator all the way back to the engine? I am verry interested in this and would love to see any picture either of you have. I have seen a bug with a chevy small block in it. but i didnt get close enough to see how they did it. the coolest bug upgrade i have been close to was when a neighbor of mine put a suped up VW buss motor in his Super. That motor judging from the looks of it is very similar to the EJ22 if it was carbed insted of FI. infact it had 2 carbs on it. i dont know if this was stock for the buss, or one of his upgrades, but that bug did fly.

normally just above 3.. and 4.5 -5 when im jumping on it. -
i put on some cheapo chinese tires but was plesantly suprised. they are Sumitomo Serexon 4s they have the HR speed rating (by the way that is a speed rating as far as i know.. HR is 130mph) and i for get the traction rating. but its rated better then the potenzas. anyway they were like $60 each on sale for $44, so i didnt expect too much but man they are great. dry and super wet traction. i only got them this spring so i dont know about snow yet but they got rave reviews. and they have 60K mile warranty. which is higher then any comparable ive seen. check them out on tirerack.com
