I dont remember the make but it might have been a mitsu, but anway i think it had 4ws only when in reverse. that would be pretty nice for in city.

Now how do people feel about turbo on a rig. To me i think it would be useless unless youre doing baja. Super chargers work great to help on jeeps, but they are expensive and I doubt you could get one for a sube. Wouldnt just a good carb and exaust be the best bet if you are into low speed stuff? When did subaru first start putting Injection in?

Ive never heard of Paragon Park. but that doesnt mean im not close to it, or havnt been there. give me a little detail and I will see. Thanks for the advice. As for the $25K for a jeep that is just small change compared to what can be done with one. and as you know once you have a hot rig you just cant spend fast enough to get it even better. I think with a sube I could control it since it would be the only one like it. its true Jeep rigs are a dima a dozen. I dont reall know what these EAs and EJs are yet but im learning. but from what i hear an early 80s with 4x4 will work. i like the brat for looks but it seems hard to come by. i think i will go waggon.

I am new to Subarus and I have a '00 OBS. but i am looking into getting an older sube to trick into a off road rig. I have a lot of history with jeeps. I just sold my last one though, and insted of spending $25,000 building another one, maybe ill try a sube. Im just in the reserch stage rite now so I would like to hear some opinions on what to use and how far to go. I do want it to be street legal!! barely SO what is a good platform that i wont have to mod the body to much to keep with my pervious statement? And i am sort of a HP nut so i like a strong motor to begin with. and what mods are 100% needed and what can i put off? oh and one last thing CHEAP!!!!!!!!

You can always save some trouble and get a set of ramps at WalMart. i think there like $20. that will give you an easy 8" its safer then a jack for you and your car.

interesting.. the chips i have are on the drivers side, there are about 5, and they are very small. they look like very tiny water droplets, thats what i thought they were until i ran the whipers and nothing happened. most are nto very deep except for one. it is very strange how it is so mall but it is like a hole about have way thru. it resembles a pit like you get in chrome, very strange. thats the only one im worried about. I am hoping it will make it through the summer, but im pretty sure it will crack the first time it gets ice on it.

Nicky, I am very interested in making a rig out of an older Sube. especally if it can be done for so cheap. I would be interested in learning more. Can you really find one worth tricking for $400? I understand suspension mods obviously, but when I do jeeps i also heavily mod the engine and trans, axils, and pumpkins. how much of that is needed?

Its all good. I love my sube, and I love my jeep for different things. as they are good at different things. And the fact is you will never convince a jeep person that a sube is better and he will never convince a subaru person that a jeep is better. Honestly my OBS did better then I expected off road, it is a tough little car. I dont expect i will be tricking it out except for street stuff since its my daily driver, but maybe i will consider a brat or something of that sort for my next rig.

i totally agree with you ON3 i know subs are great cars but they are not the number one vehicle in ever situation. And to build up an off roading subaru that can even come close to touching a jeep will cost you FAR MORE then 2500. jeep parts are much more available, and cheaper. ALSO dont believe everything you hear. the TJ is not "junk", it had a few problems when it first came out like every new model, and only if you leave it stock, the transfer case from 97 - 2001 was weak and the seals went often. but the motor has remained the same for many years, and the new quadracoil suspension is a HUGE advance above the old leaf springs for both travel and articulation and also safety. CJs flip way easier. there is NO WAY any subaru can rock crawl like a jeep.

I agree with everyone. Yes of you dump a couple thou into your suby you can play around next to a stock jeep. But dump that same thou into a Jeep and no subaru on earth can touch it. so you are all right. I am keeping this sube pretty much street. And im getting another TJ to trick for off roading. As for this past weekend. my subaru passed with flying colors. Because of the rain this past week the trail was muddy but the washes sort of smoothed it out so I didnt get hung up on anything, and as we all know the sube AWD laughs at slippy mud. SO i made it down with no problems. Although i had to leave it at camp when we went to play in the bog that had developed in a field by the river. I dont think I could take a 2-4 ft deep mud hole. or at least didnt want to try. Thanks for the support!!! and good luck to both sides with the ongoing jeep/suraru battle.

YAH THEY DO!!!! no lockers though. they are still street machines. As a former Jeep owner (and will be one again) they have a LOT going for them. honestly, they are FAR superior to subes from an off roading standpoint. Which is not ment to insult subaru owners, but that is what jeeps are made to do. As far as a well rounded vehicle subarus are definetly at the top of the list. above jeeps for their abilities on a wider range or terrain, just not the big stuff. I have driven a lifted jeep on the highway, it aint fun! with a 4-1 ratio just going 65 in 5th gear you feel like the motor is going to explode. But that is why i chose subaru, I cant go back to a 2wd car ever!!

This weekend is the first time I will have to take my '00 OBS off road. Wish me luck. We are going camping for the holiday (Memorial Day, US.) and the site is about 2 miles off the main road, down a pretty gnarly trail, to the river. (Susquehanna, PA) I am going with my old jeep buddies, who are a little less then supportive of me trading my wrangler in on a waggon. Last year in my wrangler I had no problem. But this will be my first test of a Subaru off road, I know I cant show up a lifted wrangler, but if i dont make it, need a pull out or do any damage i will have my balls in a sling all weekend. If anyone is interested I will report back on tuesday and let you know how I did. Hopefuly it wont be for repair advice.

Well I will compliment you on driving skill. Which everyone knows is what wins rallies, not the vehicle. To prove this very point I have seen a good driver. Enter a stock 4 cylinder jeep wrangler into a jeep rally, (except for a beefed up roll cage and seat belts) and win first place over two extremely tricked out, not even street legal CJ7s. one with a 300ci super charged in line six. And the other with a chevy 350 V8 shoehorned in. On a dyno or straight line he wouldn’t stand a chance. We are talking less then 20% of the horse power. But in a race it all comes down to driver. You should be proud your car is not faster then a WRX when you win a rally. I don’t know many people who would give all the credit to a car, when they can take it themselves. I dont doubt yor car is faster then stock, and I am still planning a cold air for my car, please tell me what you used.

I dont have any kids so Ive never really looked into this. but when the dealer was giving me the run down of my outback, he said there is a 3rd car seat hook up thing in the back. Now I dont know how I would feel about having a child ride in the trunk, and i dont see how the DOT would allow that. But thats what the guy said. check your owners manual.

If you want to save some money and dont mind a very small DIY job. Visit a junk yard and grab a horn out of an old American car 60's-70's, or even better yet a diesel truck. as long as they are electric or have a small electric compressor for the air horns, you should be able to just swap them out without much trouble. people will know she means it with a dual pipe air horn blast, especally coming out of a subaru. I did it to my sisters honda without telling her one weekend. Man was she supprised!

Cool... I knew I came to the right place. I know a lot about cars and I am a real DIY guy. but these subarus are really square pegs compared to what im used to. i.e. American muscle rust bucketts. I love it though How much is an O2 sensor for this car, and is it tough to replace? is it located down by the CAT? I am already working toward fabricating a cool air intake by removing all the intake piping up to the air box, and replacing it with a new tube pointed out a hole into the fender, hopfully with a velocity cone on the end if i can find one. 2.5" is good for the tube dont ya think? I dont want to kill my MAF sensor thingy.

Yah I live in PA, and they have adopted a "stricter" emissions test. Well not exactly stricter, just more expensive. now it costs $50 for the second sticker, and all they do is a visual inspection of the exaust, and a gas cap pressure test. funny, they used to do that on the regular safety inspection anyway... who does that $50 go to???? but seriously they are requiring the dyno test in the biger cities now too. luckily subarus are exempt because of the all wheel drive. ROCK ON!!! but you still have to pay for the visual test, but at least its one thing you dont have to worry about. bring on the fake CATs!!!

Thanks for all the good advice! I just did the air filter a few weeks ago. and I will do the fuel filter this week, and I will get the codes pulled. I didnt know it kept codes even if the CEL doesnt trip. As far as the clutch goes, it seems to engage fine, but it does feel very strange. But i just attributed that to the fact I am used to a Jeep clutch which a a huge plate and you have to use the full range of motion of the pedal to shuft. i.e. push it all the way to the floor. but a budy of mine drove my car saturday night (DD) and said the clutch was the weirdest he has ever driven. but he is also a jeep guy so what does he know. I will try to get to a dealer and test one under the guise of looking for a new car. but i am wary about that because if it drives that much better, i might want to buy one. as for the squeak. it seems to have stopped, and the weather has been a LOT more humid this week. ??????

I need some help from the gurus on this site. I have been reading for a while and you guys really seem to know what your talking about. And i dont really trust dealers, so i hope to get some info here. Thanks. Im still new to Subarus. I just got an 00 out back sport. it has the 2.2 with 5spd manual. and it is very weak in first and second gear. i have never had one so is it this car,or is mine just not performing? Details: 48K mi. new oil, new air filter. no CEL trip. no misfire. runs smooth. just not much power. I know its not turbo, but i would think a 2.2 could still keep up with minivans pulling away from lights. it seems to loose power as the RPMs climb above 3K. Not dramatically, just not very much get up and go. Still seems to have okay torque, i can pull out going up hill and all. Its just between like 15mph and 30mph it doesnt accelerate very well. Then it recovers a bit once im moving and up in 4th gear. could it be my fuel filter? I also get a squeaky berring type noise right around 2.5Krpms. mostly when the engine is in gear and i take my foot off the gass (revving down) its not a wheel berring, i know what that sounds like. this is much smaller sounding. Is this normal? I have to be honest I will be a little dissapointed if it is. I love the handeling of this car but i would like some more performance. it is still under warranty so i dont want to mess with it too much myself either. But does it need attension?
