Hey guys. I purchased a 1997 Legacy L wagon, and I'm thinking about building it up. I'm in the market for some used coilovers, but if I can't find any here soon, I'll be buying a new set. Here's the look I'm going for: except his wheels are 16x8 and 16x9. I already have wheels I won't tell you what they are but I will tell you they are 17x10...they have a weird ET but I'll be changing that with some spacers

Hey guys, I'm back. Sold off my lifted EA82 and built a Toyota pickup. But in my quest for a new daily driver I came across a 1997 AWD Legacy, so I bought it. With this I've got some more questions: will outback parts (of the same generation) fit my car? (like the hood, mirrors and headlights) Anyways, here's my old EA82: and I'll get some pictures of my new Legacy when it's light out. But its a 5-speed L-model with 165k that I got from the original owner for a really good deal. (and the gold Legacy in the picture is my old 1st gen Legacy)

I'm wondering how you make a rear lift? I've got my strut extensions (cut and re-welded strut) but my car leans to the drivers side and I'm not sure why. I've tried using different struts, and made sure that my extensions are exactly 2" (which they are) but it still leans. So I think I'm just going to do a simple 1" or less lift the easy way. Isn't it with a piece of bent metal or angle iron where the strut mounts to the body?

I don't know that this tire could have been saved that way. There is a pretty large hole in the sidewall

Went out to Duvall and wheeled a bit with some Toyota buddies. It was awesome, great weather, fun trails, except for when I got a flat and had to drive 4 miles on my wheel.

I have never had an issue with my Harbor Freight spring compressors. Isn't there a nut/tophat that goes at the top of the strut to keep the spring compressed? You compress the spring, put it on the strut, and while still compressed put the tophat/nut on (which keeps the spring compressed), and then put the strut/spring in the car. Do everything with the strut out, and will never have fitment issues with your spring compressors.

If it is a vf40 it can be rebuilt. It it actually pretty simple indeed, no balancing required, and the special tools you need are some 12pt metrics, and a torx. Rebuild kits range from $60-100, you're going to have some trouble getting a new one for that price. But usually rebuild kits are for before the turbo blows, not after. The kits are intended for a turbo that has minimal shaft play. You pretty much have to pull the turbo off and examine it to see if you need a new one, or if it can be rebuilt.

The grill is a different design. And I thought the earlier models have have lights in the bumpers, and the later models do not. As for the rear, its just the plastic piece that says Legacy on it. The AWD logo will be in a different location depending on the year. As for interchangeability; very much so. Body parts included. With the exception of the turbo models, the body, trans, and motor will usually be the same. Some rear ends may be different, but not very often.

Many things can happen. But usual symptoms would be that you are making no boost, it leaking oil, a lot of smoke coming out of your exhaust, and the turbo would sound very bad. Look at your turbo to make sure none of the hoses or oil feed lines have came off/undone, and check for shaft play on the turbo. If it is blown, you can either rebuild it, or buy a new one and swap it in. Both are very simple. And there shouldn't be any motor damage, that you should also be able to hear.

This is the general look I'm going for. Except I won't have pulled fenders, and I'll have smaller tires, different sized wheels, and probably be lower also. And my car is gold. -

I think you actually can. A lot of sti guys do it. I thought you couldn't run different sized tires on 4wd cars, like EA82 cars, but on awd cars you could? If that is the case, I'll just end up getting 16x10's all around with a 215/35 -
So, this will eventually lead into my leagcy build-thread. But for right now I thought I'd let you guys in on what I have and where I'm going with this. I've got an EA82: And I have a first gen awd legacy. I've ordered a set of megan coils (coilovers) with camber plates. After this I will be getting some OEM steelies widened to 16x10 and 16x11 with a 215/35/16 front and a 225/40/16 rear. And I'm thinking of getting a front tube bumper made so I can mount some lights on to it, but I'm not sure of that part yet. I'll keep it updated!

None of the 6-lug conversions here use adapters. And adapters aren't bad at all, I know this from my personal experience. I had 50mm adapters on my 350hp GTI for two years and never had an issue, and most people have them on their drift cars. So if they can handle that, they can probably handle your Subaru. As for tires, I have the at2's and I really like them so far, they were great in the snow, and all around. They make no noise on the road also. So if you are looking for a daily driver that you can wheel, an at2 is a good tire for that.

Not at all, and over the past years there have been quite a few subaru's, volvos, hondas, and actually all types of cars. -
Tune-up kits

Naw, no codes. It just rolled 140k, so I figured its time for a tune-up, since it's probably never had one. I'm not too keen on using seafoam, that stuff is nasty and I don't want it in my motor. I've had a couple firing issues, so I may get some new coil packs if they aren't too expensive.
