84 gl wagon 3rd gear issue
corvette6698512 replied to mountain brat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What do I need to look for to go from a 4 speed to 5 speed in my '83 GL. Does it just bolt in? Sorry for the thread hijack. -
I think its time for an engine rebuild. My EA81 runs on 3. It has spark to the plug and the plug looks fine. Im going to do a compression test tomorrow. Anyways, are these things easy to rebuild? Im thinking new rings, maybe bearings. Might lap the valves in, what all do these engines need? Its in a '83 gl wagon with a 4" lift and 28" swampers. Also thinking about a 5 speed swap, but i think the 4 speed would be fine if all 4 were firing.

Wow, i went and looked at a perfectly fine looking connector, and when i pulled it off, it broke into 3 pieces. The inside of the connector was all green and corroded. When i tried cleaning it out(because its my daily car, and i need to drive it today) it just broke it more, so i just put two small crimp type spade connectors on the wires, and plugged them in. It runs a lot better now, it starts easier, and it runs smoother. It still has a slight misfire every once in a while, but i think thats due to a sparkplug grounding out somwhere(i can see spark on the outside of the plug). Thanks for the suggestion. You were right. -

Sorry i didnt answer you. I beleive they are the original airbags, but the pump and stuff was removed. It has valve stem type fittings in the engine compartment and the trunk to raise and lower the car. The reason its so far up is because the cv's were clicking when it was lower. I might have to go take them off the xt at the local partsyard here. -

Thanks. I picked it up pretty cheap, and I'm slowly fixing the problems I found. Tomorrow I'm going to check for engine codes. The check engine light is either unhooked, or broken. It runs a little strange, so I think a quick plug in will reveal the problem. I think its something along the lines of the TPS. I also need to put a new power steering pump in it(the car came with one). -
