  1. If you have an extra you are willing to part with, I would love to have it. We get these in the junk yard once every two years or so. Wagonist: thank you for the confirmation and advice. Dan
  2. Subaru Brethren, I'll try to be brief. 86 Wagon, bought as junk for parts (100K miles,) discovered broken timing belt was the only thing keeping it from running and driving (2wd 3AT blah.) Runs like a top, drives decent enough for what it is. Previous owner, in the course of their destructive rampage, took the drivers side master switch apart, and misplaced the buttons (some of the wires are loose on the back also.) Question: I suspect without the master switch, none of the windows will work due to the child lock not being there, is there a way to jump it out to test the windows? I don't want to invest any more money into it if the motors are shot or some other weirdness pops up. The fact they had the switch apart is indicative of something (could have been the switch.) Thanks in advance for any insight. Dan
  3. When I went to cut the bolts, it got hot enough to melt the plastic and the knurled fittings pulled right out. Dan
  4. Search Maxima in this forum and a ton of threads come up. Probably the easiest bang for effort swap I've done yet. Did it on my hatch and my wagon with excellent results. Holds voltage at idle with everything on. Dan
  5. I just went through this on my 87. I left all the covers off except the center back one. Makes access to anything else you need to get to much easier in the future. Dan
  6. Ideally, you should have gotten the plug off of a junker, big wire to big wire. When I get closer to my car I'll let you know which one went where unless somebody beats me to it. Dan
  7. So a broken timing belt turned into removing the covers and doing a Maxima alternator swap while I was at it. Open belts rock....... Dan
  8. You may be better served to rebuild your starter first. It's not hard, and parts are cheap. I went this route and it solved my symptoms similar to yours with a lot less work. Here's a video for reference: Good luck! Dan
  9. I did a search ahead of time, and saw nothing definitive, so I went ahead with an experiment. I found a rebuilt EA71 carb online for cheap. As I was having idle issues and already toying with rebuilding my carb, I figured swapping this one in while I was rebuilding the other would hold me over. I hadn't planned on driving it long term...... Until I did the swap........ The car runs like a top: idle, off idle, full throttle, it runs absolutely beautifully. Probably better than any other time since I've had it (I even got the A/C idle up to work right.) My concern is what I read elsewhere about the jetting being smaller. Is there any way running smaller jets will cause enough of a lean condition to hurt anything? Since I can't tell any appreciable loss in power, logic says not, but I wanted to check with the pros before I did something dumb. Thanks in advance for any information. Dan
  10. Carter has the throttle linkage on the driver's side, Hitachi on the passenger side. (From "How to Keep Your Subaru Alive") Do a search for "weber swap," and you'll find a ton of stuff to read through. Good luck! Dan
  11. Yes, they both come out the same way. I used a small punch first, then a bigger punch second. When you go to put them back in, don't seat the big one all the way before you start the small one. (Ask how I know......lol) When I did mine, the piece was rusted to the shaft and it took some serious persuasion with a bfh and PB Blaster to get it off. Good luck! Dan
  12. I'll try to be brief....... 87 EA81 Hatch, 140,00 on the clock, suddenly decided it doesn't want to idle anymore. Anti Diesel Solenoid gutted the last time this happened, ran good for about a year. Carb cleaner, Seafoam, and some fiddling has it idling, but not well or consistently. Runs beautifully off idle. I have a 72,000 mile complete motor on a stand. However, it sat for 6 years before I got it, and two years since. Running condition unknown. Here's my question for the knowledgable bunch: Rebuild the carb on the stand, (less miles = less wear on the throttle shaft?) Another benefit, the swap would be straight on and off, (less time for my feeble mind to forget how it goes on.....lol) -or- Rebuild the one on the car, as it is a known quantity, and I have the engine on the stand as a template. As an aside, we have visual emissions inspections in VA, and if I did a Weber swap, I would have to retag the car as an antique, greatly curtailing my usage options. I'd like to save that for a last resort. I did a search on modifying a stock breather, but that seems outside of my skill set (I can't weld....lol) Thanks in advance for any insight the pros can lend. (And sorry for not being so brief.......lol) Dan
  13. 2" stainless with a stainless Magnaflow on all three of mine. Dan
  14. Strictly a guess, but they may have replaced the rotors, run into the same issue you are having, and used the old pads. That was one of the scenarios I contemplated before I compared the calipers side by side and figured out what I had done. Shame of it was, I had wired wheeled and painted my "new" calipers, only to discover I couldn't use them.........lol Dan
  15. The older ones are indeed solid, and the calipers are not interchangeable between the two, though the markings are identical. I fought with this after buying some out of box "new" calipers on eBay. Hope you get it worked out. Dan
  16. My guess would be you have vented rotors in place of the solid rotors that go with the calipers. Dan
  17. Just did the dual electric fan conversion on my wagon following Jeszek's write up here: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/125754-easy-guide-on-five-steps-to-twin-electric-fans-swap/ Works flawlessly, as advertised :-) (Thank you J!) Now to figure out why my hatch quit idling (removed the anti diesel solenoid last time.) The struggle continues.........lol Dan
  18. It's glass, and factory. Part # appears to be 765412010. Some sites say discontinued, so I may trek down to my local dealer and see if there are any sitting on a shelf somewhere. The struggle continues........lol Dan
  19. After some poking around on the interwebs, I found this: http://www.steelerubber.com/universal-wshield-and-backwindo-70-2860-52 Looks pretty close. I may have to spend some money and find out. Dan On edit: just came across this as well: https://sponge.dvautoparts.com/discount-store/universal-weatherstrip-trim-edge-seal-w-ljimpmqllpqr
  20. Gents, The outer seal on the sunroof (83 Coupe built by hatchsub) is starting to split around the front corner. I did a brief search here, and am sensing this is not something I'll be able to source from the dealership anymore.(I can't even find a part number for it anywhere.) Is there something generic and aftermarket that can be adapted? Any advice greatly appreciated! Dan
  21. I rebuilt the front end in my wagon: Struts, bushings, ball joints, bearings, rotors, calipers, WRX brake lines, CVs and new paint on anything I touched. As I was working on it during breaks in the weather before work, it was taking close to two weeks to finish. During this time I was driving my hatch as a daily. This Saturday, while driving home from work, the hatchy's voltmeter spiked to the 17v-18v range. Uh-oh. Long story short, I buttoned up the wagon (finally,) drove it to the Pick n'Pull, got the alternator plug from a 92 Maxima (the alt itself was an original Nissan unit, obviously well worn, and covered in oil, so I left it,) stopped at the parts house on the way home and picked up a remanufactured alternator. Got the spacer cut down, wired the plug up, and now have 14.3v with everything on at idle. Wagon drives like a dream. Got rid of a CV/bearing noise, and have zero vibration at highway speeds. On to the next project. Dan
  22. Two points of note: Flux core wire is not the best choice, but will work if that's all you have. Don't try to run a bead on body panels. Stitch weld alternating places until you get it all filled in. Here's a fairly short thread on the subject that covers most points. https://www.autobody101.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18847 There is a ton of other stuff in the interwebs, including videos. Good luck! Dan
  23. This has a lot of info: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/82208-ea82-5-lug-swap-with-notes-and-variations/ D
  24. Update on the Surtracks. Less than a year and the drivers side went bye bye. I'm actually seeing them marketed under their own name now, so beware if you see them. Dan
