  1. If memory serves, I got some from the dealership. Unfortunately a well intentioned friend got rambunctious with a 20 ton press and I ended up having to buy new control arms, also still available at the dealership. Dan
  2. ^^^^^^^^^^ This. I bought one set up this way and have done two others since. Sounds good without being obnoxious. Dan
  3. You won't find a whole assembly (I couldn't anyway,) you can find the bearing though. I found the number on here somewhere, I'll see if I can find it again. Dan
  4. I always cross reference part #s from other sources before ordering anything from RA. If I can't verify it, I'll leave it alone unless it's cheap enough for me to eat. Dan
  5. Like a playing card in spokes type noise? Mine does it too when it's cold on right turns. Dan
  6. I've got the same thing going on with my hatch. Replaced EVERYTHING ( and I mean everything) from the stubs out last Spring. Drove it a lot last summer with zero issues. In the fall, I started getting a rythmic, rotational clunk on right turns only, but not the familiar CV clunk. I've wondered about my motor and trans mounts for a while. Would that allow the tail of the trans to move enough on right turns to bind up a weak universal? Hmmm...... I think Im going to brave the cold......... Let you guys know what I find. Dan
  7. You can go north towards Carova without a permit. A lot of trails and sand roads behind the dunes up that way too. Dan
  8. I built my hatch for day tripping to Hatteras :-) My profile pic is at Salvo a few years back. Dan
  9. What I meant was swap sides. If the noise follows the axle you've found your cause. Never rule out something for the single reason you've just replaced it. Countless wasted hours and bloody knuckles have resulted from refusing to accept reality. Dan
  10. You may have gotten a bad axle out of the box. Horror stories all over about that. You could swap them and see if it changes anything before dropping coin on another one. Good luck. Dan
  11. Here ya go. http://www.indysworld.com/80s/general/wheels/wheels.html
  12. I did it in my hatch with the motor in the car. I did have to undo the mounts and jack the motor up some to get enough clearance to drop it, but it can be done. Dan
  13. No, no it doesn't. We are all picking on you, and you share none of the cause. Just like the last time you turned the place upside down. The common denominator seems to be you, not us. We seem to do just fine until you show up. Good luck to you. You probably need it. Dan
  14. Here's the other guys impressions on trailer tires. Given your necessity of "doing it right," I doubt you would be satisfied. http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum1/HTML/091736.html#p15 As a side note, he had them up for sale a short time later, with less than 2000 miles on them. -AND- You are complicit it the responses you get. You came HERE looking for help, we didn't come to you looking for anything, especially your take on what we do or have done. When you post visceral, divisive comments about our work ("backyard- jerry-rigging- sloppy" etc.,) you will get a visceral divisive response about your opinion. Some of us had to look for YEARS to find the parts needed to do what we wanted to do, so forgive us for not being a little more compassionate about your plight. This subject has been beaten to death all over this forum. Anything that can be done, has been done, and discussed at length. And yet, there were still people kind enough to indulge yet another question about bigger wheels. Perhaps you need a refresher in Google Fu if you "exhausted all internet searches" and came up empty. Good luck. Dan
  15. I'll share with you what I found while doing the same search a few years ago. Trailer tires: I found a thread in another small car forum from a guy who was looking for taller tires to improve fuel economy. He mounted trailer tires and reported back that the handling was bad, bordering on dangerous. I did a cursory search to link back to it, but can't easily find it again. It's out there if you feel like putting in the time. Drilling rims: I have 14 inch Dodge D50 wagon wheels on my EA81 hatch, with 195/70/14s. I drilled them myself, and have had two sets of tires mounted on them. I take the tires off the car, and carry them to the shop in the back of my truck. The reasons are two fold: I don't want to hear a bunch of crap about mounting drilled rims on the car - and - They work better if I tighten them up a certain way. (Original holes first, drilled holes second.) It took me a while to find a set of what I wanted, but I kept at it, and found em. The extra holes are barely noticeable. Pugs: I bought a set of 15 inch Pugs a long while back and had them in the attic. When I bought my wagon (EA82) I decided to run those with lower profile tires (195/60/15s.) No lift, no rub, and minimal performance loss. Again, I don't like people touching my stuff, so I had them off the car when the tires were mounted. Lug nuts are scarce, but out there, with guys making new ones every so often. Drilling hubs: I haven't done it, but given the wealth of first hand knowledge from people who have beat the heck out of drilled hubs without issue, the preponderance of evidence trumps personal opinion. It just takes time. A LOT of time. Combing Craigslist, junk yards and forum "for sale" sections. There you have it. Dan
  16. I agree with all of the above. I ended up having to buy a new control arm after a trusted mechanic coworker mangled it with a press trying to get the old bushing out. Dan
  17. Va Beach here! Not really into the newer stuff, but if that side of the house is anything like ours, you will find anything you need to know. Dan
  18. Rule of thumb: Most of us will NEVER get the money back we have invested in these cars. I'm sure most of us do it for the love of the hobby. I could have bought a much nicer, much newer car with what I have spent on my old Subies, but then I wouldn't have what I have :-) As to the seats, I put Escort GT seats in my hatch, and with the exception of slightly elongating one hole, they did bolt right in, and were a much better ride. Dan On edit: Here's one of the threads, http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/111113-well-that-was-the-easiest-seat-swap-ive-ever-done/?hl=%22escort+gt%22
  19. https://www.flickr.com/photos/65262052@N05/15718136811/ Getting better! Still can't post pics for some reason.
  20. Does anybody have a live link to this information? I've exhausted my search fu to no avail. Thanks in advance. Dan
  21. 12v pulls the pin out of the idle circuit. No power, no idle. Dan
  22. You can gut it and drive the car. Take the pin and spring out and put it back on. Been driving like that for a while without issue. Dan
  23. You can also take it off and gut it. There is a spring and pin inside. Take the pin and spring out, put it back on. Not ideal, but it will get you going until you find another one. (I was unable to find one, but you might have better luck) Dan
