Documented: The 1970 FF-1 Project car...
Kostamojen replied to Kostamojen's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Well, putting the wheel under the hood (combined with the FWD drivetrain) in 70 gave this car "class leading" trunk space... But I don't have a key to open the trunk yet Gonna have to do a bunch of work to even get in there to unbolt the latch... -

I can't get in the trunk yet without a key, but it looks like a few things came with the car... Now here is the biggest problem so far that i've found... So the car obviously needs A LOT of work. Ill start cleaning it out tommorow, then seeing what I can do about the body. Ill have to find a shop that can repair that kind of body work. Luckly the roof and doors seem in good shape, unlike the '78 I worked on... -

Kostamojen replied to moosens's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Ya, I noticed the radiator hose routing in the service manuals... Seems like it might be easier just to convert it to a custom radiator with fans rather than modifying the intake manifold... But at this point in time, I'm just speculating and seeing what options are out there. So ya, this info helps a ton -

Hmm, interesting... So the easiest way to run the EA71 "dry" shortblock on the FF-1, I'd need to have: EA71 Shortblock EA63 cam EA63 heads EA63 intake manifold (or is the EA63 intake manifold interchangeable with the EA61's?) Swaped EA63 bellhousing (or will the EA61 bellhousing work?) Spacers for the flywheel (or is that not needed keeping the EA61 transmission?) -

Ebay is blocked here at work for me. Is that an ebay listing for the FF-1 die-cast model? Anyway, Ill probably be interested in that front bumper, but I really do need to see the car before I can start figuring out what I need -

I really need a good close look at the car to get an idea of what it needs... The front bumper looks toast. Driver side window will need replacing. That rusted fender may be save-able, I doubt a replacement will ever show up anyway... But I'll make sure to send you the list ASAP, and I don't have any expectations for ETA or anything of the sort so don't worry about that. Oh for sure! I owe darrell big time for his help with this I was fully prepared to rent a truck and trailer and take a day off to pick up the car during the yards business hours, but workinwood's offer to pick up the car for me and deliver it was WAY more than I could have ever asked for! This project is 100% a result of his efforts, no doubt about it! -

Sorry to bump this... But I was informed by my shop foreman (who even worked for Subaru back in the 80's) that it was common procedure to replace the EA6x shortblocks with EA71 shortblocks so they wouldnt have to deal with the sleeved blocks... Ill see if I can pull more info out of him, as i'm thinking this might be a good route to go with the EA61 in the FF-1. -

No, I havent forgotten you I plan on making a short list this weekend after going over the car thoroughly, then cleaning up the car as best as possibly before making a full list. I do know the first thing that it may need are those "vents" on the d-pillars... Those are obviously missing -

Ya, I was kind of concerned about that fire when I first read you were up there at Almanor... We had a few days down here in the valley last week when the smoke from that fire completely filled the valley like a thick layer of fog, it was quite horrible to be in, hard to imagine being that close to it. Thanks for all your help Darrell It was my goal as well to save this car as quickly as possible. I promise to everyone else that I will be keeping a detailed log including LOTS of photos and videos of the car from day one. After all, a car like this if for everyone on the forums to enjoy, its just that important! -
