After re-reading the thread, that was never specified... So, which one is it Andyjo?

Note to everyone: Impreza L's didnt even have rear swaybars standard!!! They were an option up to I believe 1997. My last Impreza L didnt have a rear swaybar at all. I had to get the control links with the endlink connections to even have one installed. Yes, the swaybar does improve handling, but if you are going for a lifted car its not important. Emergancy handling is FINE without one (unless your struts and springs are worn out junk too, which yours are not Andyjo) If you want, install front and rear strut bars instead... Doesnt do the same thing, but it will help a little and wont hinder off-road ability.

So what did you do about the fender liner and other plastic bits under that part of the bumper?

It definatly doesnt smell like "roasted marshmellows", at least not to my nose... Definatly a strong smoke/exhaust smell. I checked the oil too and cant see any evidence of coolant mixing in. So, I painted one side of the car while I wait for my gaskets and other stuff (wont be here til the 15th or 16th):

Well I give up. The car is spewing white smoke now. I put in the working choke, then reset the timing according to the service manual (disconnect the distributor advance/retard, and the vacume advance) set it to 850rpms with 8% of timing, then pluged everything back in and disconnected that recirculation silved suction thingy from the air cleaner and pluged it and set the idle for 850 rpms. It idles great, seems to be working fine, but ya its spewing nasty white smoke when you rev it hard and let off the gas... I really dont have any ability to do anything else with it. Also, I'm getting alot of oil from around the PCV valve now...

Update: Ok, so I gave it another shot with the Junkyard carb... Failed badly, I screwed up the timing thats for sure. Here are the sheets from it: As you can see, its still not idling right, and its still dumping alot of gas... Plus I guess I have to get that lame heater hose on there too. I just did a little more work on my old carb, adjusted the float and the choke some to spec. But basically what I did was take the good throttle off the Junkyard carb and used my rebuilt carb with it... Its on the car and I just started it up before dinner and it ran/sounded good. Im going out now to fiddle with it some more, and maybe try the timing... I still dont know if it will pass like this. I wonder whats wrong this time, sheesh... I'm going to have to give up soon.

Well the car runs pretty well now minus one thing. When I start the car up for the first time after awhile, other than the fact it doesnt idle right away as I left it last night (IE I usually have to turn up the fuel mixture or the idle screw), if I throttle it more than just a tad it will temporarily loose RPMs (via watching the tach) and sound like it wants to die but then it picks back up and revs. Its pretty annoying, and does get better with more driving. However I had the air cleaner top off checking to see if it was spraying fuel when I was doing this (and I think it is) and I tried to throttle it hard once, which cause a nice spark and rather nice mini-boom in my face... That wasnt fun. I looked again (from farther away) and noticed a small spark around the fuel jet when giving it gas... Then one more, time from inside the car, I gave it 100% throttle immediatly while it was idling and got a BIG Boom + small fireball from the intake... Ideas? And yes this is the brand new, untouched, JUNKYARD carb I'm thinking I should put the rebuilt carb back on it, but keep the good throttle and see what that does... However, I saw another post about this kind of problem with an EA motor with a hitachi carb and it was fuel pump/fuel filter related. I do have the OG fuel pump, but It didnt do this before I replaced the carb it had all the other problems and such...

Well I went eenie meenie miney moe and picked the blue ignition wire (next to the yellow/black wire that goes to the starter). It works, but I dont know if its draining power while its off. -
Oh they know all about the "performance" but not the Off road ability I have a friend who does alot of dirt road stuff with his 4EAT WRX, and it seems to work well, but so does every other subaru... I'm just wondering the VTD might have a specific advantage in loose stuff or when wheels end up in the air.
