So, how bad does this engine look to you?
Kostamojen replied to Kostamojen's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Oooh, clean pushrods! I want to clean my valves now in this chem dip... but that means disasembling the heads -

There WAS a nice layer of dirt across the entire engine bay, about like whats on the crossmember in that pic... Its all clean though as you can see, but I still need to fix/patch up those rusty spots!!! -

The plug wires are blue like the distributor cap. -

Ya, it should be nice. Ive painted a few engine bay parts that were looking bad, and have a few more that i'm going to paint now. I'm thinking yellow for the valve covers, but I havent decided what to paint the intake yet... Blue, black or yellow? -

Few hundred bucks?! The only thing im having worked on is getting the bolts out of the heads... everything else im doing myself! (cause I cant afford to get it done professionally anyway) brian: No, just getting the headgaskets, I already have every other gasket thats the only thing thats still coming (ordered them yesterday). The carb turned out good actually, its all nice and clean now, and seems to be actually working better (the choke, throttle, etc. seem to be working better now, im sure it will run nice once it is on the car!) -

EA71, MY78 4WD 4-speed Wear doesnt look bad, and the buildup seems quite cleanable. I was just wondering if it was indicative of any sort of possible issue with the motor, but then again I guess these pushrod motors do run a bit crummy -
I just today pulled the motor off of the 78. Needed to do it to get the heads off so I can take them to a machine shop to get the stupid broken bolts removed. Anyway, took some pics, lots of crud everywhere... How bad would you guys say it is? http://community.webshots.com/photo/166896604/171703146PyfTiT http://community.webshots.com/photo/166896604/171703775NeuAfc http://community.webshots.com/photo/166896604/171703684heMuUr

I would have to pay to have any welding done. What kind of drill bits should I be looking for? Carbide, titanium, etc.? BTW, I just finished the Carb/Intake manifold rebuild. Now, I need those bolts out, then lift up the engine to do the oil pan gasket, along with the valve cover gaskets and oil pump gaskets... Stupid bolts, I would be done this week if it wasnt for them!!!

Just a thought... I dont think they would fit, but hey, its an idea... Dual 32/36 DGV's... probably too much carb, but it would be neat...

Throttle body/carb spacer gasket?
Kostamojen replied to Kostamojen's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I got it figured out. I cut a little channel around the crack location with a dremel, then filled it with epoxy and ground it flat. Basically sealing the crack -
Throttle body/carb spacer gasket?

bump, im screwed without this thing... -
Well, ive got like everything going for rebuilding the carb on my 78, but aparently the gasket kit I got did not come with the throttle body space gasket! (the thick one that goes between the throttle and carb, between 2 other gaskets) The one that was on the carb is cracked, so I definatly need to replace it... Any one know who has them?
-
Ill probably have to drill them out considering what state they are in... (ill take a pic tommorow) with basically only a couple of threads sticking above the head, with only one or two with enough left to get a grip on to try to get them out... I'll probably ruin the heads too if I try and drill them out...

Well, I went to take off the intake manifold today so I could start working on replacing some of the gaskets for the old wagons motor... And sure enough, as I was removing the bolts on the intake manifold, one of them sheered right off.... Its in the head darn good. By the time I was done, 4 of the 6 were sheered, all the short ones I guess I shouldnt have decided to replace those gaskets, I really didnt need to they were holding up Now, what in gods name can I do about it?!

Just curious, I havent seen anyone refer to the site http://www.allsubaruparts.com on here yet... Anyway, ive been looking all over for gaskets/etc for my 78 and so far this looks like the most comprehensive site for it, along with KEM manufacturing. Anyone have any experience with that site/vendor/company?
