  1. The RS guys dont even run over 2.25" on their cars, larger diameter pipes just kills torque. 3" is what WRX's use!!! (for a turbo motor, less backpressure after the turbo = better, you want that air to go out as easily as possible for the most power) I would stick with 2" at most for EA motors.
  2. Anyone have any pics of their custom exhausts? I'm going to have to do the same thing, replace the whole exhaust (headers are leaky, along with the rest of the exhaust... Its an EA71) Whats the diameter of the exhaust ports from the heads? I was thinking run that size to a Y pipe through to 2" piping with a resonator and a magnaflow 2" straight through muffler out to 2" piping maybe even without a tip... My car doesnt come with a Cat stock, so I dont have to have one, save myself some money, but it might help with emissions...
  3. Its the "Berryman chem dip", blue/red/white logo, same as the carb cleaner can.
  4. Worked just fine. Actually, it worked better on the throttle section than the canned carb cleaner did.
  5. Actually, the roo-builder kit is under $20 I also discovered today a parts-dip carb cleaner container! Man, that was a waste of spray cans when I could have used that...
  6. Well I spent like an hour at Maita Subaru trying to see what parts still existed for the car in terms of gaskets... I managed to get the EGR gasket, oil pump gasket kit, and the valve cover gaskets. However, all of the carb gaskets are discontinued, or at least not in the US Cant even get the nice cork gasket for the carb like everyone says to get. I'm emailing Roo-builders right now about getting a gasket kit. Ive seen a couple other odds n ends web sites that carry kits it looks like, but im not sure whats in them (doesnt say).
  7. Simple question, are the EGR's, Vacume regulators (like the one on the intake manifold, and on the distributor) sold new anywhere, or must I find replacment ones off of junkyard cars? More specificly, this is for an EA71. I have a couple replacements off of other cars for some of them, but they are not brand new of course... I think I could use some newer parts for the rebuild.
  8. Thats not the problem, because if I did loosen it, it would still die, because it would not idle under like 1200rpms. Anyway, the Carb is Officially dismantled Its in all its pieces not, sans the throttle/choke shafts which I left on there. There was a HUGE crack in the thick gasket that sits between the throttle and carb, along with several cloged vacume spots in the regulator and some of the vacume shafts too... The throttle might have a vacume leak, its really loose and I dont think that is normal. There is a brass ring on the outside, and it looks like it should be tighter than it is. BTW, Who carries alot of the carb cleaner? (other than just the bottled kind, or is that the kind I am supposed to use?)
  9. Good stuff. I guess the crank main seal will require an engine rebuild?
  10. I dont want to spend $100 on a full engine kit when I probalby wont use most of it. Just the oil pump gaskets would be fine, along with the carb gaskets, EGR gaskets, vacume regulator gaskets, and maybe the distributor gaskets. The EGR and distributor I would presume would be the same as some of the later model gaskets, but I dont know for sure.
  11. Too late, its all dismantled :-p I took off the carb, EGR, vacume regulator, and the other vacume thingy on the intake manifold. The EGR looks totally cloged, part of the throttle looks clogged too. The center gasket definatly needs replacing on the carb. I found a couple more problems too The distrubutor looks like its leaking oil from underneeth where it sits on the block. There is another Oil leak behind the crank pulley, im not sure if its the one where the oil pump is or behind the crank though. And I have a frayed wire on the wiring harness right bellow the middle of the Radiator...
  12. If it doesnt involve welding or wiring, I can do it. Dont worry about that part. I have plenty of time right now too, in fact ill probably go start working on it now.
  13. I got the timing gun, ive fiddled with the idle/mixture screws a million times, but I havent cleaned out the carb... Is that via just with a can of carb cleaner, or taking it off and soaking it?
  14. I think I want to get just an aftermarket tach for my '78, I dont like not having one, its annoying. Hard to tune it well too. Suggestions? I already have an autometer screw on gauge mount for a 50mm gauge...
  15. Title says it all, I got the other problems seemingly all fixed, got the timing right, but the car just will not idle under 1200rpms... BAH! Im pissed... At least I have a month and a half. Time to rebuild the carb?
  16. When you browse 8 forums in the course of an hour, you tend to have to take shortcuts :-p
  17. Ok, ill keep an eye out for you too. BTW, the 78 is running well, but it is having a bit of an issue trying to get it to idle. If you turn it on and leave it, it will die, but if you give it alot of gas, it will return to idle and idle fine and run fine. Ideas?
  18. LOL! The whole internet talk thing isnt really region specific... its just internet specific :-p
  19. Well ask around when you get there for Steve, and this is what my car looks like: http://community.webshots.com/album/138980219SMGShA I might be helping out with the cooking, but you can call me on my cell (916) 390-3650 if you want, ill have it in my pocket.
