I read that the 2.2 motors are not prone to head gasket failer, so is there any chance that it was a thermostate stuck closed? How should I go about trouble shooting the motor while its out of the car? I was plannig on mating it to the tranny and jumping the starter to get it to crank to test the compression before I put money into it, But what else should I look for ?

My buddy came into work today and said that he looked under the hood and saw 2.2 on the motor so it is a legacy. Now the guy he bought it from said that it was a blown head gasket, how he knew I dont know. He did replace the radiator. I got a little more info on the car. My buddy says its a 1990 legacy 4 door sedan with 175,000 miles with the body in perfect condition with a sunroof. Automatic. He has seen my loyale many times and is sure his is a legacy. He bought the car just for the tranny. The guy he bought it from said that one day it overheated and he drove it a little bit here and there short distances before it would get hot. Also it has a new steel radiator. Before steve pulled the tranny out of it he drove it around and said it sounded good and ran good just heated up quick. So after steve put the good tranny from the sedan into the wagon his kid ran the wagon out of oil becuase he never checked it. So now the tranny and motor are coming out of the wagon so I will have a good sedan in great condition, a complete motor that needs head gasket, a complete motor that only turns a quarter turn either way. and one good tranny with 190,000 miles or so on it. Anyways sorry for the limited info but I will try to get more info soon.

Alright guys, I did a quick search but need more info. I have the chance to pick up a free 1992 subaru sedan, I think it is a legacy. It has a blown head gasket. Currently the motor and tranny are out. The tranny is auto and it is decent. The motor runs but needs gaskets. What will I be looking at as far as do it myself repair? I am a mechanical guy and have tools. How difficult is this job? what else should I do while motor is out? How much will I have to spend to do it right and do all labor myself? Do I need to have heads and motor surfaced? Thanks in advance. I will update as I get more info. I have not seen the rig yet but it is from a co-worker and he is an old timey chair lift mechanic and used this car for a tranny for his kid. His kid ran the other car out of oil and the tranny is comming out and going back into this rig. Anyways free is good but just wondering the amount and difficulty in labor as well as cost to do it right. Ted

I mounted a tow hitch on my 90 loyale 5 speed 4x4. It is the type that bolts to the bumper and thru the pan with a 1 1/4 reciever hitch. I will be towing a 4x8 utility trailor(300 lbs) with two dirt bikes (600 lbs). I will be traveling 1500 miles round trip. I still need lights. Anyone have a good source for plug in or splice in wiring harness for my rig? Also will I need a power converter or anything else? Anyone got pics of there tow setups with trailors and loads towed for referance? It seems like my car should handle this no problem. I know that it will slow me down for sure.

90 loyale 4x4 vibration + power loss.
tedbull replied to tedbull's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I is a manual transmission, same size stock wheels with new snow tires. Everything on the car is original. I have owned it since it had 68,000 miles and now it has 132,000 miles. One day it was fine and the next- vibration. It was not as sever today and I was able to stay in 4x4 and keep an RPM of 3,500 that seemed to smooth things out. I will crawl under it on my day off. -
I was driving my 90 loyale to work this morning like normal. When I got into the heavy slush I switched into 4x4 like I do almost daily as I work at a ski resort. Today I experienced a vibration that would only occur when in 4 wheel drive, Also there was a loss of power while this was happening. I switched back and forth and no vibrating in 2wd but vibrating in 4wd and slight power loss. I tried it after work on a the icy but clear roads and same thing. Anyone have a simaler issue? Where should I start looking? Again 2wd was fine-no vibrating and full power.

be sure to post a pic of you with your new bike.

Dont be afraid to talk them down to a price that you think is fair. They mark those things up like you couldnt belive. Also alot of used bikes out there on craigslist, people are just trying to sell them for what they owe becuase of the poor economy and all. I got my bike for a couple grand less than msrp just by going in there a half a dozen times and talking to them.

Blonde, Thanks for the props on my SV650. I sold it and have been missing it ever since but my GSXR has been a nice upgrade. I have heard alot of good things about the ducati monsters and I would like to get my wife the 600cc Monster. The newer monsters have a 7,500 mile service interval. Also Harley Davidson just decided to stop making buells and they are selling at the dealerships for half price right now while supplies last. Buells are great bikes and require very little maintenance. I own one and like it alot. Good luck with whatever you choose. Now is a good time to buy. Ted

Lift kit for Loyale Wanted.
tedbull replied to tedbull's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i like the color alot but I did not realize it was a rare color scheme. I think I have seen others around that are the same but maybee they were solid blue. My car is in such good shape with low miles that I am having a hard time deciding if I want to lift it and start wheeling it. Ted -
I just wanted to see some pics of differant intake setups of the EA82. I have a K&N style cone on the end of my airflow sensor. It picks up some air from the stock hole in fender and some air from the engine compartment. I have been planning on going back to stock. But I also was wondering about snorkle setups for older subarus.

Very Nice. Looks like fun. Good job. Ted

anyone like "low riders"?
tedbull replied to True2Blue's topic in Non Soob Cars and Bikes Discussion
I think it looks badass. With bags you can get the frame to sit on the ground or scrape your exhaust tips. I also like a truck with 20's tucked in the fenders. But dont listen to what anyone else thinks do what you want. Looks good. -
I owned a 06 SV650 for a couple years. I bought it with almost no miles and completley stock. I modded it quite a bit. It was a great bike, it moved me along well and I weight over 200lbs. I sold it to get a gsxr 1000 because although the SV is a great bike it is $6000 dollar bike so some of the componets are not top quality, Not bad, just not what I wanted to hang on to. I did all of the mods myself and It was easy to work on, reliable, and tame enough to learn on but with enough power to please. I would say get the SV650 for sure. I attached some pics of my bike for your veiwing pleasure. TedBull. http://WWW.SVRIDER.COM

That is awsome, I really like how you adapted the VW parts on there. Your exhuast is great. Really nice fab work. I will use your write as a referance for when I take my EA82 out of my loyale and install a EJ22. Then the EA82 is going to go into my 74 VW Baja. Again Nice job. TedBUll

Lift kit for Loyale Wanted.
tedbull replied to tedbull's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I removed my stock air box and put a K&N style cone right before the air flow sensor. I think that it added a bit of power. It is getting air from the engine compartment and the hole in the inner fender. But the filter gets dirty fast. I have been planning on putting the stock cleaner box back on and using a K&N drop in filter. Is the stock setup good or can it be modified to be better? Also when I do lift my wagon and start modding it for trail use I would like to add a snorkel. Has anyone done this and would the engine get enough air with that much intake hose? Ted -

The hood scoop is not stock. I found it on ebay for like $15 i think. It is ABS plastic, I primered it, painted it with duplicolor to match and glued it down. I did punch out 4 holes under the scoop to push air into the engine compartment. My intake is not anywhere near the scoop so I dont know if it does any good other than looks. TedBull -
Lift kit for Loyale Wanted.
tedbull replied to tedbull's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
my loyale is stock but I will try to hang for as long as I can and just watch other guys wheel there rigs. I will probably not do any serious mods untill I finish my vw baja bug first. But I am going to start getting parts ready for a lift, tires, wheels, and a EJ22 swap if I can. My rig is super clean and only 122,000 miles on it so I want to get some more miles out of it before I start the transition into a street legal trail rig. -

Thanks for the info. -
I did a search but did not find what I wanted. I am looking for a 4" lift for my 90 Loyale. Something affordable but quality as well. When going 4" up does anything have to be modified other than the steering shaft? Also I am not up and up on the model designations for our subaru's. I see alot of EA81 and so on. Is that the engine code or vehicle model. If so what would my loyale's designation be? I have had my car for two years and have kept it mostly stock for commuting. Other than some deep snow and mud I am new to subaru wheeling and subaru modifiying, but I can do some fab work and I have mechanical skills. Also I live in sultan, Wa just down the hiway from rieter. So if you want to go wheeling let me know. Thanks for any info. Ted aka TedBull.

Thanks, I found it. I had knocked the main vacume line loose when I changed out my fuel filter. Ted

Hello, I am new here and this is my first post. I tried a search but came up with nothing. I have a 1990 loyale 5 speed with the push button 4x4 on the shifter. It always worked great untill today when I pushed the button and nothing happend. I did not feel or hear the usual clunk when it engages and the 4x4 did not display on the instrument panel. I looked for a fuse and found nothing that was labled. My hanes service manual does not mention it. What would be the first few things to trouble shoot this issue??? Tedbull
