Thanks in advance for any help ya'll can give. You guys have been great in the past ... I'm really in need now!! I will try to be concise but cover all possible points of interest. 1995 Legacy AT AWD 2.2L Car has been fine. All systems normal. After work Tues, no start. Seeming dead battery. Called for a tow. No response to a jump start... same click. click. dimming display. Checked and cleaned all main connections... Battery terminals, ground near starter, and the main starter connection. Left on charger overnight. Same. click click dimming display. Key in Accessory position, all seems ok. Radio works. Dome light bright. Key in "on", normal dash display, radio works. Key in "start", displays go blank or dim, radio cuts out all together. Return to "on", displays return, after some seconds, radio returns. Switch came under suspicion only because I read reference to it here. But no wiggling n jiggling had any effect. Pretty stable in how it acts n feels. Took starter to Pep Boys... tested bad on "chatter time" (whatever that is) but it did run. I replaced it anyway. That was last night, 9 pm. Came home and called it a day. Today, 4 pm, I put the replacement starter in... now i get no power at the switch. The dome light works. Hmmm - haven't tried the horn fwiw. After being off the charger about 24 hours, the battery reads 13v. I'm gonna take it to get tested but I'm back to suspecting the switch. Whats involved in swapping out the ignition switch? Any posts here that give any breakdown on it? Will I end up with a new key? This means I'll have the original key for the doors and a new key that just fits the ignition? And am I off base suspecting the switch? I did pull the washer resevoir and unbolt that main fuse box, curious if I'd find a meltdown underneath there but it all looked ok. Its bolted back in place.

Just a follow up.... I finally did get around to doing the plugs n wires. It was really routine. After looking things over and remembering remarks here, I started on the driver's side. I DID remove the washer resevoir (just two bolts, two electrical connectors and two hoses)... that made gettting in there a no brainer. On the passenger side, I briefly considered pulling the intake but it really wasn't nessecary. I did opt for the NGK platinums. The electrode tip is very tiny compared to plugs I've dealt with in the past. I gapped them to .044". Once I was finished, I immediately went to the local station where I always fill up and topped off the tank. Hopefully I'll see some improvement in the mileage. 16-18 mpg in usual city driving (very much worst case stop n go, stop lights and stop signs in dense urban driving) . If I get onto the highway at all, it does get up over 20.

I'm fixing to do plugs n wires on my '95 lego (2.2L, the usual). Are these as troublesome as the 2.5? Am picking up wires from dealer later today ($50!!! yikes plus tax!!) but will certainly get plugs elsewhere. Anything I need to watch out for? btw I am a believer in treating the threads on plugs. They go in easier and later came back out a lot easier as well.

yo yo welcome aboard. I like your old school ethic ... so many kids today are afraid to get their hands dirty and think if something quits working to just replace it. And you've found a great resource. USMB has a wealth of knowledge and is a great community to mix it up with. -

hey welcome aboard. there is lots to read/learn here... you're in the right place -
why do you change the springs? The Outback struts won't bolt right in, as is?

In Bristol, Pa... just a hop from the NJ border... I visited a U Pull jy. There were only three Legos... each still had it's engine and tranny in place. I glanced around and most wrecks I saw still had their engines in place. Some at least had their hoods over them but it still seems like poor practice. Sorry, but this seems odd to me. I've never bought a jy engine but yards I've visited in the past had large components pulled and in their own area. Usually they'd be indoors. What would be the expectations for these engines? I suppose with a leak down test, an assessment could be made. Any comment? What would you all suggest as a max price to pay for one of these unknown commodities? 2.5 equip Subs with HG issues show up alot and it seems prudent to think about getting an engine prepped and then shop for a car to drop it in. I'm just brainstorming, but I can prep an engine in the space I do have... much easier than parking a project for an indefinite time.

Another newbie hello

Happy with it so far. Had a few things to take care of when I bought it, including getting rid of the dreaded tight turning judders. Did an AT fluid & filter change and it disappeared - whew, dodged a bullet on that one. welcome to the board, and welcome to Torque Bind... yes, you like some of us got off easy with the fluid change. grats and again, welcome -

I like that Forester... LOTS! Welcome to the board. -
I test drove a 1st gen Legacy before buying my 95... it drove ok but it had clattering relay sounds on the passengers side - just as described here. I drove the car a couple miles with no issue but that relay sound was there with each little ripple in the road. I wondered at the time if it was responding to a switch in the driver's seat for occupancy detection. I know that car is still on the lot ... I wonder if others have been warned off by the same unwelcome noise.

Hail St Helens!!! I just left there in May, '09, having lived there since 2003... I miss it!:-\ Welcome to the boards. Lots of members in Pdx Metro but I know there's a couple member in Clatskanie and I bet there's one or more in Longview/Kelso. You'll find lots of info and tech support here. Use the search function first, then ask questions. You'll learn more and know better what to ask.
