  1. The food in Dixie is great. I envy you that. Bojangles resturaunts, Catfish n hush puppies, fried chicken by the platter.... oh, yeah!! In South Carolina, you'll encounter boiled peanuts. They taste nothing like any peanut flavored food you've had before. They're a snack food like popcorn or chips but very cheap and very habit forming. I love em!! The folks are a little set in their ways... Apartheid is still alive in certain quarters of S.C. I'm sure you'll figure it out real quick. All in all, I'd give it a B grade. You could certainly do worse.
  2. 25 mpg would be great! I'm not done tinkering so I'm looking forward to my 21 mpg improving. As for dropping the tank and getting at the sensor, I'm not likely to volunteer for that. Thanks for the input though. I'll keep ya'll posted.
  3. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=105111 '95 Leg L Wagon... Since replacing the knock sensor and clearing the error codes, I've clocked about 250 miles. The CEL has not come on and my mileage is up from 16 mpg to 21 mpg. All positive. But the fuel guage is aggravating. At anything less than a full tank it drops quickly when stopping or maneuvering but is slow to recover to a proper indication. And by the time I'm down 6 gallons, it reads that I have only a quarter tank. The manual says it holds 15 gallons but at a quarter tank on the guage, it's never needed a full seven gallons to fillup. I have read disparaging asides on the forum; is this typical or is my guage/sending unit acting even worse than usual?
  4. Late addtions to the thread but here's a couple shots of my Legacy. Am getting settled in, ironing out some issues. So far, so good. After years away, it's good to have a Subbie again.
  5. I'm eching Rver's question... an earlier post on this thread mentioned adjustment for Subaru's as early as 1995. That would include my Legacy.
  6. Just as an update... After replacing the knock sensor and clearing the codes- 24 hours later and in excess of 100 miles driven, still no CEL. (thumbs up!!!) I will replace the O2 sensor anyway but that is lower on the priority list for now.
  7. We're thinking the same... I replaced the Knock Sensor, then pulled negative terminal on the battery for ten minutes. No CEL on startup. Will post my updates as things develop.
  8. Blog update. Based on cash on hand, I went with the Knock Sensor from Autozone. $35. And BTW it took almost as long to locate it on the engine as it took to actually replace it. Look dead center on top of the back half of the block... I thought I read it would be downhill on one side or the other depending on the model. Not until I held the replacement and knew what to look for that I spotted it. A 12" extension was reguired, for sure. I've reset the codes and will see what pops back up. I read in the search results that some of the 420 codes will clear and then return. I'm curious to see how this behaves. My budget is very limited and I'm looking at a full set of four tires, so a $100+ outlay for that sensor doesn't fit into my plans very well. I'm driving roughly 120 miles RT to Jersey and back this evening... I'll bet the CEL returns (probably sooner than later). Sure, a "full set of plugs n wires etc" tuneup is probably in order but that can wait a day or two. I bought some Seafoam and added that to the full tank of fuel. Not a fix but one item I can afford today.
  9. Ok am pretty square eyed from reading search results but I'm gonna say the news isn't all bad. Does the Bosch O2 sensor get the board "OK"? Pep Boys stocks them for about $60. I've no clue about the knock sensor. Is that something only the dealer will stock? EDIT... $100 for the O2 Sensor. $45 for the Knock Sensor.
  10. Sorry.... I've been on here so much this week, I just assume it's burned into everyone's memory. My bad. '95 Legacy ..2.2, I think, auto, 110k. FWD fuse in place currently to hold off TB problem. I just bought the car on Sunday. Was just reading search results on Knock Sensor. It does seem like an easy fix. Will search "P0420 code" next
  11. Reading USMB I learned to check with the key on before starting the engine- if I get a CEL. Negative!! (No ABS light either, FWIW, but there is a bulb in the socket.) I pulled the Combo Meter and found the CEL bulb had been snapped off in the base. All local mainstream autoparts dealers only stock Sylvania bulbs which are a tad large and won't fit the base, so I swapped my TCS bulb over to the CEL socket. Of course my CEL was on when I put it all back together, so I went down to PEP Boys and I've now got a print out for my codes. P0325 Knock Sensor #1 Malfunction P0420 Catalyst Efficiency Low Bank #1 Additionally, after 167 miles driven, I'm showing 17 mpg (17.02 actually)... city driving, with a short 12 mile round trip on the Penn Turnpike today. The car runs great. The tranny shifts hard when cold but the engine, throttle response etc are smooth and w/o issue. Whatchyall think? Because of the poor mileage, I have my own ill informed ideas about replacing the O2 sensor. Do these codes immediately tell me that I need a knock sensor and a Cat?
  12. I was searching and found this --- if I get this wrong, I hope the moderators will make it work. http://www.9500i.net/manuals/Subaru/Legacy/95/SubaruLegacy1995.zip It opens into several categorized folders. I can't speak for every detail but what I've looked over has seemed really great... especially for FREE, it's really nice.
  13. Great read here. Also good to see everyone pitching in! I'll be watching this, waiting for word that you've got all together. As for all you guys in PDX.... I was in St Helens/Scappoose from 2000 to May of '09. Too bad for me I didn't get back on the Subbie train sooner.
  14. 'found this via a Yahoo search: topic "95 legacy AWD clutch pack". I started on ebay and went to Yahoo, looking for a vendor that sold the 4? disk pack that will be needed to fix TB. Good read here. Perhaps wordy and maybe not totally accurate but it does cover some bases. What is the clutch pack called and who is a recommended vendor for ordering it from?
  15. Many many moons ago... I bought an old Ford P/U that was up on blocks in the guys yard. He threw the tires on while I went to the bank for the rest of the $$$. We drove around the block for a test drive, we exchanged money and tittle, and away I went. Later that night, as the OP on this thread described... THUMP THUMP THUMP. I saw the loose nuts and the hogged out holes in the rim. When I jacked it up, taking the weight off the lugs but the tire still resting in the gravel, the holes were so enlarged that the tire fell off , passing right over the lug nuts!! It had hogged out the holes in the steel rim that badly in just a couple hours of driving.
  16. I can picture what you're describing but I've never heard of such a service. I'm in Philly... I'd think that just about anything like that ought to be available in a town this size.
  17. My wifes says "sounds like a road trip to me. Let's go." Lemme see what I can put together. No point in all this til I get the tire issue straightened out. Members on my original thread are referancing tire shops that will shave a tire down the right size. That's all news to me! But thanks!! "hold that thought"
  18. yeah, fluid loss. I'd wondered about that, too. I've all ready 'stained' the asphalt from doing the fuel filter on another car. Even after depressurizing the system, a good bit of fuel hit the ground. No issue from the neighbors but I see the spot everyday and know it's my handiwork.
  19. I've put in the fuse, after moving the oddball to the rear. Indeed, it does seem to have solved the problem for the time being. I understand this is not a repair but a stop gap to prevent further damage. I don't know that I can get a set of tires this week but hopefully in about ten days I can get a set of four. In the mean time, I can keep my driving to a minimum. Thanks for your patience and generous advice on this. And may I add, compared to some other forums I've been on over the last few years, this one doesn't seem to have many self important wiseguys. That's certainly a plus.
  20. I'm bumping this cuz I assume this is what I need to be thinking about. I'd be doing any work at the curbside in front of my apartment. Can I put jackstands under the front (or rear) and get this done without having the car up on a lift?
  21. Hahaha I asked, and the fellow said it had been done. He said they'd done the water pump, too - even though it didn't need it. Allegedly, the car was his father's. I honestly don't know what to believe from this guy. He says he'll be able to dig up some service records in the next couple days. IF that happens, it might give me a clearer picture. I've swapped the tires now and it seems a bit better. I will know better once I've driven it further than around the block. I know finding a tire that is basically an exact match is going to be tough. Sadly, I can't immediately afford to go out and spend 400+ for a new set of four. And as a further rub, the three matching tires are in really good shape with deep tread. They are reasonably new. Thanks for all the support. I'll keep ya posted.
  22. I have to say, keeping the mismatched to one side vs both on one end - is an insight. I do understand the reasoning but dunno that I'd have thought of doing it that way. For now, I have one oddball and I think it'd be less of an issue on the rear. Should I not put the fuse in? I;m hoping I can get a better tire on there tomorrow... probably not a perfect match but one that is closer in size. (The current odd tire is a differant tread and I'd say closer to 1/2" differance in size)
  23. I can't guess how long the odd tire has been on there. I've put about 15 miles on the car since picking it up. I will be swapping that tire to the rear first thing tomorrow, and installing a duty c fuse. I do have to drive it tomorrow but hopefully it will be less than 20 miles round trip. I'll have time to get this 'conversion' done before I go. I have felt some binding, assumed it was associated with the off size tire and am currently hoping no permanent damage has been done. The binding occurs in tight cornering and does free up once I'm rolling straight again. It seems to not be an issue as long as I keep the turns wide. All things being equal, I could have changed those tires today but I brought the car home and attended to other duties. In the little bit I did drive I could tell that I had an issue to be addressed but other demands pulled me away. The info here has given me a clearer picture of what is going on.
  24. This thread has told me what I need to know to get by for a day or two. Read my intro ... I just bought the car and it does have one off sized tire - (much to my disappointment). The oddball is on the right front. For now, I will get two matching on the front and install the fuse. Thx
  25. It is an automatic. As it stands... w/o the C duty engaged, I'm basically in 4 wheel mode all the time? Sounds like a loss of economy, not to mention extra drivetrain wear. What is the required rating on that fuse? 20 amp adequate? And BTW... thx for the rapid replies. I'll be here lots as I get used to the new ride.
