Or at least untill weird ************ starts happening in the workshop.............. Never really needed a portal to the underworld.

Hey Twitch. Its been round a couple of times now. The wierd thing is, I was on the way to the wreakers to grab among other things a new cluster with tach meter. I just happened to notice the km as I was driving and wondered if I would get to the wreakers in time. Turns out I had a couple of k's to spare so I had to go round the block a couple of times to get it right. Even so it's still a remarkable coincidence. And now I have that instrument cluster sitting in the workshop staring down at me. Creepy.

Yes I have heard this. It seems to be a fiercely debated topic. But I believe those that say the fuel is vapourised in the carb long before it reaches the intake ports.

Stuff done over the last few weeks: Cleaned and fitted mag wheels sourced spare mag and relocated spare to the trunk Replaced drivers door hinge Replaced right front light cluster and trim Replaced left front ball joint. Replaced right DOJ boot Reconditioned and fitted steering rack Ripped out all the interior carpets Ripped out all the speakers and fitted new door trims Raised the steering wheel column and a load of other stuff I can't remember. All in all she has had a seriously good birthday!

Should I be worried?

Heres hoping its a mullered head gasket..... Time to take the head off and find out.

I thought about this but it is also possible that the valves are closed on the other cylinder. Maybe turn the engine over 180 degrees and see what happens?

Some pics please? This might help us help you.

Have you ckecked the pressure pass circuit on the pump? Is all present and correct?

In situations like this I always ask myself exactly what I have done since the problem occured. In your case the initial problem was slightly ticky lifters and intermitent oil light. Now you have oil light on and ticky lifters. In my opinion it is not a new problem. It is one you have created. Go over ALL you steps to find out where you went wrong. Last time I was in your situation I had replaced the flywheel messed with the igition and carb. All of a sudden the engine ran like a dog. I was convinced it was a igition problem and a mechanic told me it was the carb. After 3 painfull and depressing weeks having replaced the igition system and rebuilt the carb a number of times I finally realised that the timing marks on the new flywheel were about 30 degrees out from my origional flywheel! Reset timing and I was on my way. So don't dispare. The answer will be there somewhere.

Might be time for you to get the tools out and find out. checking out the manifold gaskets is a 10min job. If they are ok then you know the problem lies further in. But think you will only find out by further exploration. No crystal balls here.

My manifold gasket failed only a few weeks ago. All the same symptoms except exhaust gases in the radiator. I thought it was terminal at the time but it turned out to be a cheap 5min fix. You may also be lucky. Heres hoping

Just been on the phone to Kelford Cams. The guy was really nice. He can fix me up with a suitable grind for about $150 NZ The only thing is he did hint that there is more to porting than meets the eye. It seems that you can make the engine run worse than before if you take off too much material in the wrong places. I couldn't really take up too much of his time by trying to explain what I have done. So I wonder If any of you can point me in the right direction for these heads. Cheers Dirk

Here are some before and after pics of my port and polish job on EA71 Heads. More to come as I progress.

I skim round the hole with a dremel tool just to knock the burr off. Then they pretty much slide out with aid of a bent coat hanger.

I don't have the cash to have things made for me but I may be able to justify the expense if there are 'off the shelf' lifters available.

Cheers. I want to do as mch as I can. I cam grind is on the cards so I can have it suited to the new followers. I intend to inspect and modify every part of the engine as best as possible for my needs. I guess it is prudent to start at the camshaft and lifters since these will determine other parameters.

I was wondering if I could up grade my hydraukic lifters to roller lifters? Is there a company that can supply these for an EA71?

Has anyone reconitioned a 5 speed transmission? Can it be done with non specialist tools? I would like to try it with my spare. Any advice would be welcome. Cheers. Dirk.
