"and it's running pretty happily except that it backfires when you let off the accelerator if you open the throttle up more than 1/2 or so. " mine dose the same. I think it is improper back pressure from an incomplete exhaust.I need to fix that. srry, cant help with vac. advance. or intake. This thread may help with intake http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=125383 GOOD LUCK and enjoy one of the the coolest cars ever! -

The dome light did not work in my 86 brat when I got it. I popped the cover off, There should be a screw that holds the switch in its pivot place. remove that carefully. there will be a little spring and a steel ball smaller then a BB. If I recall the spring should sit in the switch body and the steel ball on top of that. when you activate the switch the ball rolls over a set of contacts and completes the circuit thus allowing current to flow to the light. The ball on mine was caked with dirt an grease.which was the cause of the problem. I simply pulled the light assembly. brought it inside and cleaned the whole thing real good. especially the steel ball. let it dry over night, then simply wire it back up. and hopefully it will work. It probably isnt necessarily to pull the whole assy. but I wanted to make sure it was clean as a whistle. Hopefuly this makes sence and will work for you. -
If you can you should post a few pics of your car. it sounds awsome! Sorry about its problems, I have no input that I feel will help. WEBER+1

Its an EA82T. Im sure somebody is willing to do it but ive heard that your particular motor is prone to have problems, and may not be worth doing. You could always find a non turbo engine and swap it out. just a suggestion

I dont know how to post pics directly on the board, but all you have to do is go to a picture hosting website. I use http://www.flickr.com/ Make an account kinda like you did on the USMB and then from there you can upload pictures of your choice. then you can copy the address of the picture and paste it in your post.

I was crusing around on my TRAIL 90 looking for old chevys or subarus to fuel my ever accelerating imagination. I came across a junky looking house surrounded by cars. Its hard to say for sure cause everything is surrounded by trees and I was kinda scared to go down the driveway, but it looks like there is a little Subaru 360 van sitting down at the bottom of a hill. I was maby 500 feet away but I have pretty good eyesight so im 90% sure it is what I think it was. The front end for sure stood out, Big round headlights is what I remember the most. Unless there are other vans that look like that. What would one of these things go for in average non running shape? If I work up the courage to go down there and knock on the door I will defiantly get pics. I thought to offer maby $200

I hate to admit it but when I replaced my clutch I couldn't adjust it all the way. I found out the petal box was bent, allowing the bracket to sit closer to the clutch fork. I just took the conical adjuster nut from an old clutch cable, drilled out the threads and slid it on over the adjuster threads. then I used the original adjuster nut from there. It seems to work with no slipping

Subscribed! Epic shop by the way.

Make sure you route the clutch cable UNDER the heater hoses.

What do you think? Ive been looking at an EA82 wagon where they claimed had an engine knock. i was curious so I decided to go check it out. This was honestly the first time Ive really checked out an ea82, Its not as simple looking as an ea81 I have to say. I first noticed there was no oil cap or radiator cap. :rolleyes:I checked the oil and it was clean. I got the keys and started it up. All I could here was the lifter tick. then I noticed under the right head there was a steady stream of oil:eek: So I shut it off. I couldn't tell exactly where it was coming from. Maby valve cover gasket? Ive read a bit on the standard reseals on an ea82, oil pump, cam tower o rings.......? Then theres the timing belt:-\ On top of that I just found an ea81 that is claimed to run for fairly cheap. So I thought either learn to reseal the ea82,lifters too and have 2 timing belts Or buy the EA81 that I know a little better and put that in there and have a reliable rig and save the ea82 for a later date. Opinions?

Beside the 81 wag. 86 Brat, and the 85 parts brat I have a 66 Chevy K10 with a Mild build 383 that gets 5mpg:mad: A 65 Chevy with a 250 I6 gets 22mpg:headbang: an other 65 chevy with 235 i6 that just kinda hangs out and Im totaly cool with that. 73 ford F250 with 360. A POS that i want gone A 76 F250,300 I6 gets about 14MPG, Only reason for that was the $500 price tag and no rust at all I just relized how many trucks I have. WTF Then the Dodge spirit.(my mums) Oh I almost forgot the Geo Tracker that I got for 150. Still wating on paperwork

I finally was able to order a thermoswitch for the Brat. I am assuming when I remove the old one there will be a hole in the Rad.Right? If so while Im at it I might as well pull the radiator and flush it. My plan was to just use a garden hose. When installing the new switch should I use teflon tape? Or some sort of RTV? I bought a thermostat from napa a while back but I havent installed it since Ive heard that Subarus like the OEMS and I see no point to need to replace it again a month from now since I used a cheapy one. Whats the temp of the original one? I think I have a 180. I just want to do it once and do it right. Thankyou
