  1. I would recommend using a quality PH2 size phillips screwdriver to remove the oil pan bolts. Conveniently, there are access holes through the cross member for the bolts at the rear of the pan.
  2. Thank you for all of the updates. Of course it looks exciting. I should have tried to catch up with twitch as he rolled through town. Everyone have a fun and safe trip back home.
  3. I happen to have EA81 wheels on my EA82 wagon. The seem to clear fine. Maby the 85-86 calipers were different?
  4. Maby you did not rotate the engine 360 degrees after you installed the pass. side belt? Align pass cam mark pointing up, make sure the cylinders are at center bore via flywheel. install pass. belt. check the marks on the flywheel, make sure it hasn't moved. check the passenger side cam pulley. mark still straight up? Rotate engine 360 degrees. passenger side cam pulley dot should be pointing directly down. now line up driver side cam pulley pointing up. Check your flywheel marks, make sure it is centered just like it was. now install drivers side belt. sometimes it helps to pitch the pulley half a tooth off before you slip the belt on, the belt tension will pull it into place. Hope this helps. good luck.
  5. JuhaKankkunen That engine sure is clean. http://www.flickr.com/photos/59058330@N03/9444020719/ While I was out and about my EA82 suddenly developed a lifter tick. No suprise there. As it turns out, the rear retaining ring on the oil pump pulley had broken free and was allowed to spin against the oil pump body to the point of creating a hole. Surprisingly it didnt dump any oil, just a few drops on the way home. However my timing belts did become oil soaked. While at the yard pulling an oil pump, I looked up to see a NEW radiator. Score! My radiator was original with 300+k miles. I got excited and ended up replacing my oil pump with new oem seals, the old leaky radiator and all of the cooling system hoses, except the little bypass hoses from the carb to the block and thermostat housing. Oh, new timing belts too. I need a pic of the engine bay.
  6. The only issue Ive ran into the 25,000 miles running coverless is spilling a bit of oil on the right timing belt while maintaining my oil level. A simple solution is to set a rag over the cam pulley under the oil filler tube. But it seems when ever I do this, no oil is spilled. Real easy belt changes, and simple diagnosis of oil leaks or h2o pump/oil pump changes. My belts run real close the engine side of the pulleys. I used to be worried they would work their way back and fall off.It hasnt happened yet. and I rely on my car to deliver pizzas. I run about 50-80 miles a day. Oh, a plus side in my opinion, everyone will think you are crazy when you pop the hood and they see the exposed belts. After tripping out on the spare tire
  7. Thank you Tom. If you listen close enough you should be able to hear it running. It should make a light rhythmic tapping noise. Unless it is actually dead. What are the symptoms of your car?
  8. The water in your oil could also be caused from a freeze plug letting loose. I would start by pulling the valve covers and checking if all plugs are in place.
  9. Did anyone else notice the bobed lifted brat in the background? It looks like its on a Tracker frame. Awsome ea81 coupe too OOPS, your BRZ is cool too. I sat in one today at the dealer, it felt nice and low
  10. I painted my EA81 wagon wheels and threw em on the EA82.She looks much better! http://www.flickr.com/photos/59058330@N03/8927598006/ I finally found good replacements for the sun damaged upper door cards before http://www.flickr.com/photos/59058330@N03/8927598392/ after http://www.flickr.com/photos/59058330@N03/8927598072/
  11. Plasti-dip is really cool! it is a rubberized "paint" that is removable. https://www.dipyourcar.com/home.php Here is a link to their site
  12. Im curious where the culprit was. Did you have to pull back the casing on the harness? Ive been dealing with the same symptoms on my 86 Brat, And I feel very lost with my lack of electrical knowledge. Thank you.
  13. Thanks for the quick Q & A. It was a real simple task to clean out the Hitachi. And the improvement is dramatic! My EA81 now has a smooth idle and she will pull all the way to 5k rpm rather then crapping out at 3.5k. I wish I knew about this one sooner.
  14. I can be there. Friday the 26th at 5 pm. sounds good to me. I will try and bring the Brat. Hopefully I will have the dead coil figured out by then. Im looking foreward to it.
  15. OOH! Im excited! It feels like its been too long since Ive been on USMB. I cant wait to see it. Thanks guys
  16. That is a very common place to leak from. Every EA81(stock Brat engine:grin:)I have had leaked or still leaks oil from the oil pump. Try the Search function but first check out this recent thread.http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=137808&page=3 good luck
  17. Sounds like you are in the right direction. I would start with an OEM thermostat. The difference can be seen here. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=126278&highlight=thermostat+difference I personally wouldnt touch the water pump unless it is leaky or hard to turn. It is most likely a clogged radiator. Especially if its original. http://www.rockauto.com/ Is a good cheap place to order parts Remember to make use of the search function of the forum. It may be a pain to us but patience will prevail.
  18. I have a 4' long chunk of channel iron on my 84 wagon. It looks to be 4" X 1-1/2" X 3/16". Im sure it would be simple to build, but I got lucky and picked this up at a junk yard for $13 Nice and solid yet it almost keeps a stock look with the factory 80-82 wagon end caps on.
  19. For comparison here is the inside of the passenger side valve cover on my '86 EA82 at 288,000 miles when I first picked it up. sorry no oil pan pics This is the EA81 in my '86 Brat at 167,000 miles http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa389/SUB_RU/84%20Subaru%20GL/FILE0516_zps7c0f73d1.jpg Here is a the EA81 in my '84 wagon at 274,000 miles In all honestly its not too dirty. I bet most of the build up is from the Penzoil that was ran in that engine. I have heard lot of stories about Penzoil being bad oil that likes to sludge everything up. You can run seafoam in the oil from now on just before an oil change. And try not to use Penzoil.
  20. I keep seeing a Darker Blue EA71 Subaru around the Spokane area. First time was on 2nd, near the Dealer.Same spot I first saw baccaruda's Lifted EA82. Then just yesterday at the west end of Boone. I think it has yakima cross bars on it. Sound familiar to anyone?
  21. I fixed the sloppy shifter on my 4 speed using GDs method with a 3/8"x16 tap. While I was there I also fixed the rattling with a new nylon "cup" at the lower pivot. I also swapped the rounded style shift knob from my 81 wagon. I am amazed at how much shorter the shifter feels, and its nice and tight too.
  22. Im pretty sure that is caused from a bad connection going to the positive battery terminal. Alt. is trying to charge the battery but the bad connection wont allow it. Listen to Gloyale and add a new cable to battery, clean connections, and dielectric every connection you see. I thought 8 gauge was the best choice in cable? A friend of mines Corolla did a similar thing. replace alt. output cable(8 gauge)and new terminal clamps with dielectric grease on every new connection. It is charging good now. Good luck
  23. Looking good! I wish I could say it only took about an hour. It felt like it took me a good five hours just to get the old gasket off,However I did improvise a brass nut as a gasket scraper,It was nice and soft but it sucked to hold on to.Im curious, what did you use? I bought my seals separately,I wasnt aware of a kit. if anybody wants individual numbers here they are. EA81 Oil Pump O-ring part numbers: 806915050 806949030 806914020 806938020 Body Gasket: 424207000 Good tip with the razor blade on the large inner o-ring. I had a hard time figuring out a way to lift it up and it was hard as a rock. Razor blade did the trick. Personally I used clean engine oil on the o-rings. either way seems fine.
  24. I will leave this old gen stuff here, or off road? Part 1 Part 2 I hope everyone enjoys this as much as I did!
