Now I figured its time to tackle the messed up intake gasket. it has a severe air leak near a bolt. I started marking lines one at a time last night and made it this far Went out today and got the intake off, nice n dirty All the bolts came out easy except the front left side. the threads in the head seem fine but the bolt is stuck in the intake manifold. I haven't tried getting it out yet but my thoughts were wd-40 and maby heat? Im not to sure what to do with the intake surface of the head,it seems pretty pitted to me. I do have OEM gaskets for it so I hope it will seal ok. any tips? I bought the water pump bypass hose today and I will need new PCV hoses and valve, What else should be checked or replace, Beside a Weber:burnout: Thanks

What ever happened? -
Never switched out the column. I let a family member drive it for a few days and everything seemed to correct its self?? Thermoswitch works. at least the fan stopped running when ever it wants.OEM thermostat PERFECT!!! same with the gasket. complete difference in construction. sealed 100% the FIRST time. Now occasionally at idle it craps out like its got a clogged filter. one by pump replaced less then 2 months ago. engine bay done last summer. dirty tank, clogged line? who knows? will investigate when the EA82 goes again Thanks

I have an 86 Subaru GL wagon with 292000 miles on it. When I got it at 289,000 I replaced the cam seals, timing belts and tensioners.and oil. no oil pump reseal tho. The timing belts worked fine for a few miles then the adjusting bolt for the drivers side pully worked its was loose causing the drivers belt to slip. I replaced it and had a hell of a time getting it to what I felt was tight enough. I had my bro tap on the top of the tensioner body with an extension and light hammer. I would snug it to what seemed tight enough without striping and give the belt a squeeze and the tensioner still moved untill I tightened it scary tight. It held up to a month straight of driving an 80-100 mile daily round trip up to green bluff and back for harvest with no problem, then on my very last day about 3 miles from home guess what?? the tensioner bolt worked its way out again. now I am shy a running car and a bolt. Plans are to pick up a 1/4drive in/lbs torque wrench reseal the oil pump now that I have all three seals, hardware store(10mm 1.25)?.red lock both tensioner bolts. Any tips on how to get the tensioner tight enough? Thanks

Good call on the ign. switch. some times when the key hits the off position it will act like its in the on position. I will check it with a DMM.Ive got a new to me column I will hopefully swap out tonight. Ill let you all know the results Thanks

I used no tape. It had an o-ring on it already and it seems to seal fine.

Got most other wire problems taken care of. except recently the car will act like the key is in the "on" position and dash lights up when its at "lock"???? Ive been workin 8-12 hour days 8 days a week so not a lot of free time lately

Vehicle Posture Adjustment
81EA81 replied to variant13's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
On an EA81 the front adjusters are on the strut.look in your wheel well and it will be right above your tire. 2 nuts per strut, 21 mm head. turn them equally one turn at a time.I believe it gives about an inch of extra clearance for the rear theres only one bolt. wagons lift the back seat and remove the center rubber plug you will see a bolt on the torsion bar right in the middle. Brat simply crawl under. Plenty of room under there and yes it is in the owners manual -
Thanks for the tip. Ill look around for a pipe and and grab a junk axle that I have no intention on keeping and see how it goes Looks fun sounds horrible. Poor ol EA.I think Ill leave the burnouts for my Chevy truck. But I do have to say I love your lifted EA82. its got the perfect stance If I were to do it I wouldn't plan on running it to long. Just enough to slide around abit out in the field in the title-less wagon. good stuff to know. thanks for the replies

Nice Subaru! I thought the hub would stay together but I went and played with the front end of the 85 Brat and learned a little. I thought you can only take the inner joint apart on a CV axel? How do I get the outer apart? Dose anybody know whats up with the markings on the top of the strut? It seems to say to install the struts differently for a sedan or 4x4
-
I had the thought of pulling the front CV axles and throwing it in "4x4" delivering power to only the rear of the car. Would the front hub and spindle even stay together without a CV? Has anybody thought about this? Im not saying Ill do this its just a thought. But it sure sounds like alot of fun

Ive been too busy getting familiar with the EA82 and Im happy to say it should finally be ready for the winter. The whole time I felt so bad just letting the Brat sit and gather dust. Last it was driven the High beams dropped out of nowhere with the oil pressure gauge and smoke would rise from the steering column as you activate the switch. I had cleaned the grounds about 2 months ago to no avail. So yesterday I popped the hood and cleaned every ground wire I could see. For now all the problems went away!! It fired right up and I took it for a 6 mile drive and it was ************IN awsome!!!! It seems to run o.k. it crapped out for a minute or two but only at idle I recently replaced both fuel filter so I doubt its that. After being used to the way the EA82 drives the first thing I want to do is the sloppy shifter fix. I tried before to get the second roll pin out but I didnt have enough swinging room with my 2lb hammer. and IIRC I was using a 1/4 drill bit. the 3/16 punch worked good for the first roll pin. any tips for this job? Next up is the exhaust. It might sound cool but it ends right after the catt under the cab which is not safe when it comes to carbon monoxide gathering in the air I breath. I pulled the exhaust off my 1981 wagon and I noticed the heat shield under the tranny. Is that needed on the Brat? Also the catt on the 81 has an O2 sensor and the Brat dosent. I assume to just leave it unplugged? Thanks

Future Subaru Leone '86 owner(hopefully)

Probably a fuel filter. that is what I would do first If its an EA82 it will be under the car on the passengers side before the rear wheel If its an EA81 it will(should) be on the drivers side before the rear wheel, there will also be a "vapor separator" under the hood but I think you have an EA82 As for the choke I would just look at the carb as some one pulls the cable and see it the butterfly valve moves its full range -
Is this important? I'm assuming that its for a function that my car doesn't have. But if anyone knows what it is, I'm listening. I think its for the 60,000 mile service reminder. Your EGR light will turn on and I think if you plug them it will clear it
-
I would not recommend doing that at all. your ball joint is going to pop out and it will let the strut fold what ever way the weight of the car takes it. NOT GOOD! are you sure it stripped? You might be able to get a longer bolt and a nut but I would be going to the junk yard to pull an other steering knuckle just to know its all the way it should be.

I ended up knocking the 1 3/4" pipe out about an inch or so I was able to slide the 1 3/4" into the pipe, then the 2" pipe fit over the pipe on the car, nice fit.I spent a whopping $3 on an exhaust clamp and there ya go. My car sounds so much better then it did! its actually surprising how much quieter it is considering its a straight through pipe. I hope there no ill effects with the 1 3/4" but Im honestly satisfied for what I spent

I have an 86 Subaru GL. The the muffler rusted out and broke so naturally I ripped it off. first thought was a Glasspack I found for 20 bucks but it seemed weird to put a glasspack at the end of the line. I have a slightly trashed exhaust system off a fellow ea82 I found beat up,smashed up,shot up then burnt out in the woods. I originally pulled it for the catts but im always broke and I figured I could use a section to straight pipe it out past the bumper instead of the fumes accumulating under my car furthering corrosion and sounding ************ty. Anyway I cut the catt off of it and found a double walled pipe 1 3/4 an 2" Whats up with that? I also noticed my 86 has 1 catt at the y pipe. the chopped system has the catt and a "resonator"(I think thats what its called). I got the piece to fit up o.k but the smaller diameter pipe is stuck inside the 2" pipe from a slight bend. I defiantly dont want to run it like that I found the vid of the stupidity in action. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VV8ZG-sX2Q Im glad I dont know these people personally I couldnt tell what year it was or if its injected or carbed, anyways why would they change up the exhaust like that? Thanks
