i was in the same boat as you. i founda used tire shop and got a set of 4 studded tires. after having a bubble on one of the sidewalls and having to drive all the way back to the shop i was on the road. could be worth it... who knows. i found that going cheap on tires will get you.. at lease from my experiences.

Future Plans...a summer of fun!
PeterD replied to PeterD's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well i too beleve the ea81 is a very good motor.. IMO its one of the best 4cl of its day. and still a great engine. i plan to use the ea81 as long as the spfi distributor and intake manifolds will fit the ea81... i have a feeling they will. if im wrong please let me know. -
well its me again, yes im bored. you may have read that i purchaced a weber dgav carb and have plans to install it some time in the future. but since that purchace i have had a hand full of other ideas. One is to do a SPFI conversion. yes it involves alot, i just found a pdf that was floating around on an archived post about the conversion. it dosn't seem too hard, and myself im a big big fuel injection fan. and if i could i would install a bosh CIS system into the subaru but i feel spfi is alot more strait forward. and the parts are made for subarus. I'll be searching for the parts at the local pull and save and plan to do the work in the spring and early summer, about the time i will have my scirocco back on the road for the summer months. this will alow me to take my time and do a good job. and to trouble shoot the system before bringing it back in the winter. PeterD's future plans EA82 duel range 5sp tranny SPFI possibly CD player... it sucks not having tunes Bigger exhast so am i nuts? there seems to be plenty of posts on spfi, and the idea of it sounds good to me. wish me luck... this is probably one of the bigger auto projects i have atempted, first fuel injection swap into an older carbed car. ... if i acualy have the guts to atempt it i'll keep you all updated on the process.. but not yet... not yet.

ive looked and i personaly cant see how that would work... but then i have never messed with those bolts. i have an old chiltons manual and it has a bit on camber adjustment for the first gen cars and its quite simple really... i see no adjustment capability on these second gen wagons. my haynes and chiltons shows nothing about caber or even having it adjusted after removing and installing the inner rear trailing arm. could this abnormal camber be caused by a bad bushing or a bent control arm?
-
i'll probably end up having it checked out... but as far as i know there is no adjustment for these cars... if im wrong please correct me. also i know cars need an alightment every year or so.. ive had this car for a month..

Alright, it would like to get a set of snow tires for the subaru.. the current tires i have are two different sizes.. 155/80s and 165/80s and there not that great of condition. one problem though. after taking off the rear tires one day i found that the inside tred was gon on the right rear tire. and when i take a close look the caber is noticable negative on that side. the left side is fine and tire showed perfect ware. any ideas on how to fix this. possibly finding the rear trailing arm at the scrap yard and replacing this one. possibly getting some leverage on it and bending it.:-p, i don't want to put new tires on it only to have them ware abnormaly. Thanks guys. if i could just replace it, does anyone in the spokane area have a spair laying around.. or anyone in the seattle area. the other 3 tires are perfect

don't spend your money on boutique oils like royal purple and amsoil. they cost way way too much and you will see good results from a dino oil. penzoil, Havoline, Chevron are my favorites. its not worth spending 30 bucks on oil for a car that has 200k miles on it. also 3000 mile oil changes are what is drilled into us. its not really needed with todays oils and filters. but for a car that has 200k miles on it i would stick to a 3 to 4k miles oil change. and use a good quality dino oil.

Hey guys i just steped up and bought a weber 32/36 carb off ebay. guy said it was off of his bmw 2002 and needs a possible rebuild. also from the look of it it has a water choke. is the water choke that reliable. i don't mind having to plumb in some water lines, to make it work. if it dosn't work i'll end up converting to a manual choke. also it won't be going on anytime soon. i need to locate an adapter and rebuld kit, also see if my jets are ok for my application. there it is... my baby:brow:

Hitachi 2brl, Weber, Or SPFI?
PeterD replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
anyone have a list of what is needed to convert to SPFI... sounds like it would be a project but could be kinda fun. -
dot 5 is really not needed for road use. not sure what you would gain... if you were to flush it i would fush the system using dot 5 fluid. don't forget we also drive subarus...not really a bmw and really are not driven like a bmw...unless you have something like an xt -6 or a rx turbo or whateven then maybe it will make sense.

you can still get KYB struts man... -
i never ware mine.... don't see the point. wheelin of corse

well Castrol is the most advertiesed of many oils out there. ive used it too, but did not like it at all. also there is no need for adatives like Lucas for todays oils..and Maxlife is an exclent oil all by its self.

BOBISTHEOILGUY I use NAPA gold filters ( wix ) and Chevron Dell400 15w-40 for the subaru. although currently have a Purolator Pure ONe filter on it right now. both good filters. Even if Fram filters work and meet the required specs, i still think its a horable product, and personly won't use them. you would be amaised at what oils are very good and in some cases dino oil working better than synthetic oil. check out the link above for way way too much info on oil/filters. most people buy an oil becuase its advertiesed as the best... some of the most common or "cheap" oil can be very good.

I... yes I rebuilt my old hitachi carb and it worked great, replaced all the little things that came with the kit. it responed great when it warmed up, didn't hesitate like it used to. thats when i acheved my claimed 27mpg with is totaly understandable, as the motor does have to work hard to pull this heavy little car. there is really no reason that this car shold be getting 20mpg. heck my dads 69 vw bus when it was on the road got 28 on the highway... with a little 1700cc air cooled engine.. and one tiny little weber carb/ single barrel 28mm or 32mm i forgot. im just confuesd on what makes it soo hard for this little car to get 30mpg, possibly this ea81 is a real dog.. as most with ea82 motorrs are getting 30+ mpg ( stock rigs ) if i can get it to 25+ mpg im happy BTW who has a properly tuned weber dgv carb on a stock ea81 ride.. ide like to hear what kinda milage they get. i'll keep you updated on my progress.

my subarus doin what they do best(link to video)
PeterD replied to A DOG's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That Xt sounds like A porsche.... and im not joking it does. i love the sound of subaru motors. -
It seem someone isn't calculating milage correctly... thats seriosly impossible. ive seen 37.5mpg in my gas vw and that took alot of drafting to acheve. And i hade a buddy of mine get slightly over 60mpg in his slightly modified jetta TDI. its not impossible an oold vw rabbit diesel could do 45mpg. now what did that dude say about varnish in a channel on a hitachi carb... im confused.. mine worked great after a rebuild.
-
well another gas milage update. The last two or 3 tanks have been the same. 20.5mpg. I went to adjust that small screw in the front of my carter/weber carb. it took around 10 turns to close it all the way. i backed it out to about 4.5 turns and it runs just the same.. that didn't help at all. still got 20mpg.. that included a few hours of playing in the mud and such. This is still making me a tad upset. my dad has rebuilt a spair carter/weber carb but im hesitent to put it on the car. Im considering a hitachi carb, hoping it will be a simple swap, getting the maifold and the carb at the scrap yard. I rebuilt my hitachi on my past 84 wagon and it ran like a top. got 27mpg on the freeway. A properly working hitachi works great.... i may do that to avoid the obcene prices of the weber 32/36 dgv carbs.

Rear bumper.. what are my options?
PeterD replied to PeterD's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ha, im not going to pay for one. i'll find some scrap steel and make my own. my buddy mike will be up to the challange. but thanks anyway. if you have some good ideas on what to incorporate into my bumper that would be cool.
