  1. Ok some may know i was having some issues with my car not running correct and well i rebuilt the carb and all is well, it runs awsome untill this week. I has been getting chilly at night and when i got up this week to start the car before i left for work and that is ware the problems started. When i go to start the car in the morning i pump the gas once and it starts up, revs kinda high above 2k and it is suposed to idle down when the car warms up but it dosn't so i just rest my foot on the gas and let it rev for a minut then i let my foot off and it DID idle just fine. now when i went to start it the other morning it was really chilly and wet. i went and started it, let it rev for a minut then bliped the throttle to get it to idle down to normal...then the car just dies. i start it the same way, rev it a bit then let my foot off the gas and it dies., so i grabed my work stuff started it and made sure i didn't make it idle for a few miles then once it warms up it runs great. but if i let it sit all day at work an try to start it it does the same thing just not as bad. could this be a problem with the electronic choke....if anyone has some advice or can help me that would be great.
  2. the Dello400 15w-40 like many other Diesel spacific oils are great, and better than many dino oils out there, quite possibly the best oil you can get without going synthetic. all the cars at my house use Dello400 ( Ford f-150, Toyota Camry, Acura Integra Acura Legend, VW Scirocco, and my suby. ) we also had a ford van that used it, ask around it is a very good oil...ad its not to thick...i run 20w-50 in my VW during the summer.
  3. yea...the rebuild was quite strait forward really, just make sure all the parts get go back the way they came. i hope to be able to get 30mpg on my way to school in Cheney. i just drove to Levenworth via hwy 97...really hilly 70ish hp and hills=
  4. well i just got back from a little trip i took over this weekend...my 84 GL got 28.7 mpg, i went over two mountain passes and a few large hills, got stuck in traffic and drove on some old logging roads. not to bad i would say, 335 miles on one tank.
  5. well i looked at some more stuff. the bolt to the pitch stopper deal was lose so i wrenched on that but that didn't help. i checked both brake calapers again and nothing was wrong. i don't think it has anything to do with the wheel bearing because it is only heard when taking a left hand corner. like the bad wheel bearing i found on my vw i could hear it all the time, the CVs are good and it dosn't sound like a bad CV would sound. the only think i can really think of is the tranny, after i got it all back together after the clutch job i was driving up the road and dropped it into 4low....don 't as why but i turned on a paved road and the car kinda just stoped...i was only going about 5mph but the car came to a hault and i heard some funny noises....but after that i don't remember hearing this noise im discribing....could that mistake with 4low on the pavement brought on a problem? Thanks if you can help...it seems this topic is not something many of you have heard of.
  6. after more anaylizing i found the sound to be more focused to the right side...i guess my dad while riding shotgun was right...imagine that. the sound dose seem to come farther back than the front wheels, this afternoon im going to check the right side out and possibly find my problem...if not i will wait till something just brakes.
  7. well after driving this afternoon it now feels as if its grinding even when im coasting around a corner....:-\
  8. i put the car on ramps today and found that one of my tranny mounts was infact bad, i used some wire to strap it down tight and took it for a drive but found that the bad mont was not the problem. i did alot of left had circles in a parking lot today and tried to put a finger on the problem but couldn't. i will check the mounts on the motor now that you mention it .
  9. im still in renton but will be back in CHeny some time in the next week and a half. i initialy changed the axle out with a new ( remanufacured ) axle, then just today i swaped it out just 2 weeks after the previous one. nothing changed. so im thinking its not the axle. but i did noice alot of play in the splines coming out of the tranny, lots of movement that didn't seem normal, how much play is to much, cold this be a factor. the last time someone told me to re check the nut i did and went way past the tourqe setting but still had the same sound...i will just to double check but im sure its fine. aso how do i check the DOJ ( inner joint...) can i tell if its bad without taking the boot off. also what is the slider pad?
  10. ok im puting my suby back together so i can take it off to college in a few weeks. new clutch, brakes, and i also rebuilt the carb. but for some stinking reason after puting the motor back in after the clutch job im getting a funny and irritating grinding or vibrating feeling in my feet, and also at times its audiable, ive change the axle and i still hear it, ive taken the brake calaper apart and put it back and double checked everything, i tourqed the castle nut on the axle to the required tourqe, ive changed the tranny oil, and fixed one exhaust hanger near the motor. none of this seems to rid me of the problem. my dad speculates that it is the tranny or now has changed his mind and though it was the axle and that wasn't it. now he has sorta suggested that it is a rubbing sound. possibly when the motor is tourqing when i accleerate on a left turn something is rubbing. he speculates that it could be the tranny mounts or something like that. can anyone udersand what im trying to say? if so can anyone help me out? sorry for asking so many questions but the first time i posted aobut it no one seemed to be of help.
  11. ClutchCityOnline.com I paied 89 bucks for and Exedy clutch kit. i used a 200mm clutch...not sure what the big problem is, though my car is completly stock...the last 200mm clutch lasted 50k miles with both of my sisters and myself learning how to drive a car with a manual tranny. not to bad.
  12. well i finished the carb rebuild today. it was my very first carb rebuild ever and of all carbs it was this one. it went good my dad watched and helped a little. i got it put on just about 20 min ago and drove it around. it feels like a brand new car, soooooo much better than before. i will let you all know if i find any other little issues but so far so good. Thanks for the Help, thats what makes Forums like this great.
  13. my 84 is using a 2wd clutch. though im running stock tires and stuch. so far it has worked just fine. though my little sister learned how to drive a manual on it so i think she aided in its death. so far no problems with my new one. i can see how it would ware out faster though its not that much smaller than the 4wd unit.
  14. well the car ran fine last night and today on the way to work. but on the way back from work. About half way home the car could barly idle. i finaly got it on the higway but then turned off at the first exit and i could barly get it off to the sholder. i called for my dad to come tow me home but i finaly after 3 tries and about 10min got the car running and limped it home. its still hesitating but it got me home. i really think its a carb problem now and i will be removing that pile of crap soon, today i hope. i have never rebuilt a carb but i know i can do it...how hard is it anyway?:-\
  15. Well i went to work today and i decided to drive the suby and see if i can trouble shoot the problem. it worked great till about 8 miles down the road then i could barly get it off the road and into the nearest parking lot. i let it sit for a few minuts and then drove the rest of the way to work. on my way home it worked fine.
  16. SORRY FALSE ALARM....pice of crap hesitation is still there. after the car warms up it hesitates from idle till about 3000-3500rmp. at times it wants to die.
  17. it was a bad altinator....works dandy now:) thanks for the help guys
  18. I replaced the alternator today with one i had on an engine i pulled from an 82 DL. funning thing though is the pully was bigger on the DL so i had to swap it with my old pully. after i got it all back on it seems to be running alot better though i have only diriven it around the block. But now when im driving the little VOLT guage goes way up to the red..up by 18, this happens when i rev it to 4k then shift. Is this normal because to me that seems like im going to blow something. this also was done with no electronics on. could this be a faulty voltage regulator.
  19. oh wow dude my car hesitates till a little after 3k then pulls just fine. i will check that in the morning. but it was fine just a few days a go then now it runs like crap. i replaced both fuel filters and that seemd to do nothing. Im just thinking if its the alternator the car would not alow the stereo headlights and all that, when im driving the volt guage is at a normal spot only when it starts to idle then die it will jump around a bit. i might need to rebuild the carb but im going to see what i can do before having to go that far.
  20. as you may already have noticed im in the process of getting all the problems figured out on my car today. or at least get pointed in the right direction. sorry if im asking for to much help but im not to good at finding problems, i can fix them but finding them is the problem this afternoon i was coming to a stopsign in my neighborhood and the rear tires locked up on me. all week it has felt as if the front brakes are doing nothing but now its raining and when push hard on the pedal the rear tires skid. this isn't good. i checked the pads and calapers but didn't see anything wrong. what are signs of a bad calaper, how easy should pusing that calaper piston in be. i will try and find my problem but help would be greatly apreciated. thanks all for the help you may have.
  21. im gonna give that rag trick a try but the engine has 170k miles on it and i have never rebuit the carb and have no idea if the previous owner ever did...i will have to look into that before school starts btw how much does a rebuild kit cost and or how much would a whole rebuilt carb cost.?
  22. When my dad and i got the new clutch put in and the motor all tooked up we seemed to be in a good mood. the car ran just fine after some fine tweeking it ran better than it did before i fixed it all up. but it seems i was ahead of myself. along with the funny grinding noise that i have written about in another thread i have a new problem. on my way to church thismorning the suby seemed to be fine but at the first stop sign the car died. it idled fine then poof just died. i baby it down the road and it seemd to hesitate like it was missing or something. then at the next stopsign i struggled to keep it idling. this reapeated itself on my whay home. When i got home the car was having a hard time idling in the driveway. i pop the hood give the carb a lookover and i see nothing odd or strange. i get the revs up and squirt some seafoam down the carb...now its idling fine. i go for a dirve around the block come back in the driveway and it idles then the revs fall and it dies..., anyideas. the fuel filter is new. all the vacume lines are as they were when it was running fine. i did notice when it was idling bad the alternator needle was moving up and down a bit. but when i had the revs up the engine didn't seem to mis or hesitate...only when i was moving and acclerating. then it would die when i wanted it to idle. it seems all i have come across is problems with it and im hoping i can get it running smooth before i leave for school
  23. the axle is a brand new remanufactured axle. the hub was replace because the previous hub had bad splines and this new used one is good ( the previous axle and hub din't make the same sound as it does now ). i can try that new washer and today i may take the calapers off to see if the breaks are being funny.
