  1. if my subaru has anything to do with an ej it will be a subar legacy. wich im looking into also if i find a good deal. if that happens then the 82 will prbably be sold.. untill then i'll mess around with the 82. if im tearing up axles with an ea81 what will happen with an ej22:-\
  2. thought i would give a small update on whats goin on with me. my subaru is parked for a while now, it ran like crap when i parked it, tore up a brand new CV.. possibly due to broken tranny mounts. I had planned on an EJ swap into it but figured the price and time would get to me. so i plan to do an EA82 swap instead. keeping it simple as i can. it should provide me with some added power over the ea81 to help turn bigger tires on my 14in pugs. nothing too wild and crazy. i also know i can get a motor for cheap at the local pullnsave and tear it down and put new seals and whatnot in it. i still want to keep my subaru. its a fun little car.
  3. well an email to the owner answerds some questions. its an 88 tubrbo, 180k miles, rust around the rear fenders. and the rear axle is bad. he said it was towed to his house but dosn't have the time now to fix it. since this car is not driveable i cant make myself buy it. its a little too far of a drive.. for me and my friend who is closer than me. so if you want it.. its an 88 gl trubo near portland oregon. in the portland criagslist.
  4. what can i expect with one of these. 5sp, turbo, probably push button awd.. what are some big problem ares.. and or reasons i should avoid these cars.
  5. deep down inside i beleve that the K&N filter is a gimik. it dosn't filter as good as paper. its more expensive.. it has been known to foul up the MAF on some cars.. ( probably due to over oiling the filter) i had one on my vw i took it off..and probably won't use it again. if any power is made its minimal if not un noticable. leave that stuff for race cars.. for daily driven cars stick with a quality paper filter.
  6. well i got it finished, probably took less than 45min to do. agian ive never done an axle on these newer subarus. but since its very similar to the old ones i found it quite easy. i didn't have to remove the ball joint fom the lower control arm. BUT it is highly recomended that you do so. just removing the strut strut from the hub will work but you have to stress the joint too much. i got it in but the next time im taking the lower ball joint off. a little more time consuming but it will be better on the CV. thanks for the pointers everyone. another subaru problem fixed:)
  7. so today was suposed to be the day i go and fix the car but i find out i don't have the proper tool. i got my axle from napa and went to find a proper socket to remove the axle nut. its not 30mm its not 32mm... and no one sells 31mm so i went to Sears and got a 6pt 1 1/4 in socket and it will work... i don't plan to remove the ball joint. only if i have to. and yes the inner joint has a key for the pin. that hole is offset from the center.... at least it is on the old subarus. when i pulled the one half of the axle off when i went to rescue her i just undid the strut from the hub and it had a good ammount of room.. i got the tools to remove the balljoint if i have to but i would rather not.
  8. i removed one part of the axle. removed the pin on the inner joint with a little hammer and a phillips screwdriver:drunk: all i have to remove tomarow when i drive down is take the axle nut off with a breaker bar and a 32mm socket. then undo the strut after i mark the bolts then put it all backtogether with the new axle.. and the dreaded process of getting the inner joint to line up properly... its almost as easy if not easier than my vw.. although my vw i don't have to undoo any bolts.. just the axle nut and the bolts on the inner joint:cool:
  9. didn't think that would give me enough room to install the newaxle, but i will surly try that would make it much easyer.
  10. thanks guys. i need to locate a little sledge hammer and a pipe. easy enough. and a socket. my goal is getting the car back to where i live.. 65miles away.. if the ball joit needs replacement.. i'll talk to the owner, but it iwll have to limp back to my place and i'll wait for better weather. . the ball joint on my 82 was a PITA removing the pinch bolt and getting out of that cup it was in, was hard.. then getting the new ball joint back in was tough. i gotta make this as swift and easy as possible. how easy is it to pull that ball joint out and put it back in. im sure my old subaru had way more rust and what not. but still i don't want to run into too many problems., thank agian for the tips.
  11. so as many know i need to replace my friends axle on her legacy because the cv joint broke. im after the parts and tools that will make this fix swift and easy. it seems to be very similar to my old 82 wagon in the way it goes to gether but ive never done it so it could be a tiny bit differe.t -Jack the car up, remove axle nut from hub -use punch to remove pin from the inner joint - remove lower ball joint slide axle out of hub.. -slide axle off tranny... -and install reverse from removal. my questions. is the axle nut 32mm. and what is the best way to remove the lower ball joint. ( on my 82 it was much better this way than removing the tirod end. )
  12. i said i was done with subarus... but i came back:cool:
  13. this is all i found when i pulled it out.. the other part is still on the car
  14. nope Jiffy lupe didn't F it up. the cv joint destroyed itself. I got a friend to drive down with me, he has a bigger car so we put there stuff in the car and drove back. me and the cv so that was the funny sound. i started the car. had my friend put it in gear and the axle started to spin. i only found a few pices of the part that holds the bearings in.. but no bearings. gotta make a nother 60 mile drive to put on a new axle she had driven about 250 miles and it finaly broke it seems similar to my old 82 wagon but ive never done these new legacys. any good tips or tricks. ?
  15. yea i know its hard to figure..im on my way out the door to go rescue her.. Jiffy Lube was the last people to touch the car:banghead: might need some more pointers as to figure this out. dang it she has had nothing but issues with it.
  16. hey i need some help. my friend has a 95 legacy 2.2 auto manic and she is stranded and the car is having fits. the car turns on fine its fine in neutral but as soon as she puts it in gear she is getting a grinding noise.. any idea what it could be. she is a few hours away from me and some guy helped her get the car to the side of the road.
  17. last time i had the 82 tested it faild... the gas cap test that is:mad: heck my old 84 passed without a cat ether;) must have been luck
  18. looks like fun. i went to go to page two but i didn't see it.. but then noticed that i have to read it backwords:-p and I would hate to clean my car after that little adventure:rolleyes:
  19. yea mine was doing that too. it would read about 75psi then drop to about 50 then all the way down like the one in the pic. the motor runs fine so i figure the seding unit is bad.. probably going to put in my mechanical autometer guage sometime:)
  20. l kookin in all the wrong places.. please sell it to a vw enthusiast to keep original. use a rabbit or cabrio or something.. roccos are hard to come by in good shape
  21. so has this post turnd into a post to get me out of my vw:-\ and the MK3 and MK4 era of vws were terrable.. im driving a good ol german built scirocco...not a Mexican bettle or Brazil built Golf or what not, personaly there is a difference.. wait for the MK5 Golf and Jetta.. they should be a better car.. if every one complaind about relaiblity we would all be driving Toyota Camrys.. subarus arn't the ideal example of reliablity. there surely better built cars.. but they cant shake a stick at Toyota. funy thing is that if i went and bought a newer car.. it would be a subaru first than vw second  im really liken my parents outback ( only if it was a 5spd )
  22. please don't butcher an MK1 rocco.. please please don't do it there hard enough to come by
  23. ha i was talking with my sisters boyfriend about my subaru plans... also included an EJ adapter and a lift:brow: i figure if i look in the right places an ej22 is afordable and if i want to lift and put tires on it why not have some power. so my plan is EJ swap first lift second.. i want it to be a sleeper for a little while:cool: now i need to look into swaping out the ea81 for an ej motor. its not the fab work im worried about its the wiring harnes and the ecu. i figure i can pic up a motor from the pull and save for around 100 bucks and get the wiring and all that from the same car. not sure if i have to use the ej dash and guages yet though. the car was free so whats a few hundred in mods
