'92 Loyale sedan
soobenthusiast replied to soobenthusiast's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What is the ID of the rear springs? And how stiff of a spring would be right for this car? Would front springs from a Honda Civic or Accord be too much for this car? This needs some different springs in the rear so it can better handle 5 people in the car plus a trunk full of heavy stuff (PAP trips) and such. The last time we had 5 people and about 200-300 lbs in the trunk it was squatting so much that the tires would rub on a big bump . it is also now sitting about an inch lower than the last pictures, even after it was relieved of the weight. Just for reference, from top to bottom of the rear spring is just 7 inches right now, and that's with nothing in it! So it's time to shop for something a little stiffer. Any help would be appreciated! What it looks like right now -

I think you'll remember it next time, because not every Subaru has this much class! And that is actually a fishtail exhaust pipe from a Harley. -

For those wondering, the next things planned for this car are new shifter bushings, and installing a set of foglights and a set of driving lights. The lights are mostly waiting until we figure out how to mount them. The car may even get a radio! but it would probably never be used, it just sounds so good straight-piped. It might even get those decals for the side like the rally Imprezas have. -

We painted the wheels tonight, should have pics up in a day or two. BUMP for the questions about towing. We've been looking at buying a truck a ways away, and it would be nice if the roo could be driven there and towed back. -
Kia Sephia Sporty
soobenthusiast replied to Loyale 2.7 Turbo's topic in Non Soob Cars and Bikes Discussion
I would like to start out by saying I know nothing about Kias. That said, it sounds similar to the resonance chambers on Ford Probes and Mazda 626's, so that is what I'll refer to it as. The point of this is to somewhat change the pulses at certain engine speeds. on the f2's that I have experience with the resonance chamber adds 2-3 lbs of torue around 2-3k. Removing it causes you to lose that extra torque, but gain it back as horsepower in the top end. So I would say that you could probably just do almost anything to your car, as long as it's airtight. This is most likely the reason that it ran so badly before. I'm guessing that the flow sensor (VAF, MAF, etc.) is on the air filter box, so the hole in the resonance chamber was allowing unmetered air in, which is why all those other wild things started happening. As far as a replacement part, I keep thinking of a peanut butter jar, and use JB Weld or some sort of epoxy and use that as your new resonance chamber. Or you could use a piece of plastic from some container and glue it over the hole in your current resonance chamber. Hopefully something in this helps you! -
You're probably already doing this, but make sure you're using anti-seize on your bolts, especially those new stainless ones. It makes everything much nicer if you ever have to remove it again.

Aw man...do I have to split the case?
soobenthusiast replied to Deener's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I kind of like the piston at BDC idea. Another idea is to shove some paper towels in around the crank, while the oil from the hone should keep the metal from flying around. If you are pulling the motor, I would definitely put it on a stand with that cylinder straight down while honing. -

donnieru - Thanks for the service manual link, we've used it. We've been enjoying this car, we had quite a bit of snow earlier this year, so we threw on a set of almost new studded tires on the front, and this thing was unstoppable! We have put valve cover gaskets, an o2 sensor, and new plugs in it. The plugs helped, and it doesn't leak anymore, but it still has a CEL, time to look up the codes. However, there is a new question: can this car be towed with a towbar for long distances? Specifically, will the transmission be oiled properly just be pulled in neutral? and would we want to disconnect the battery so that leaving the key on doesn't kill the battery? Would anybody have a stock radio that they want to sell? The car came with no radio, and the only one we have that will fit is an analog am/fm cassette, with wires for two speakers and a common ground! So if anybody has an old stock radio laying around it would be appreciated. Thanks for all the help, this site has been a great resource:banana: -

old subaru market has collapsed
soobenthusiast replied to zyewdall's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The older Subaru's aren't very expensive around here, but they are hard to find. While priced reasonably, the ones for sale always need some work, they just don't sell a nice running Subaru. The big reason they are hard to find is that Subaru didn't start selling many cars here until the EJ's; I've only seen 5 EA series Subaru's in Oklahoma in the last 10 years. But only one had rust, and it was just a little on the rockers. -

I agree, I listen to this plus a lot of indie rock, Coldplay, Black Keys, Franz Ferdinand, Dispatch, Jack Johnson, Jon Mayer, White Stripes, Modest Mouse, Weezer, Phoenix. Two of my favorites lately have been the Local Natives and Jack Johnson. Plus Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Guess Who, Arlo Guthrie and Grateful Dead! -
94 SPFI Loyale runs rough when cold
soobenthusiast replied to sushisan87's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just wanted to say that when the Loyale was bucking and stuttering it only had about 3" of pipe after the muffler flange. It now has a straight pipe going all the way back, and the bucking, stuttering, and stumbling has almost completely gone away. Hopefully this helps! -

Got all the struts done today. We took it for a test drive tonight; it's a whole different car with new struts and less exhaust noise! donnieru, thanks for the info on the CEL, it's definitely something to check. -
I know you're looking at the ignitor right now, but I will also suggest looking at your fuel filter. We've had vehicles that go through several filters before the tank is cleaned out, one truck needed a fuel filter every 500 miles for about 3000 miles. Just take out the old one and try to blow through it (quick and easy test) before you buy a new one.

I agree with both of you, This is the most helpful and friendly forum I know of, and I would like more vintage Subaru's near me as well. -

It still sounds pretty good, the fishtail is just a straight pipe. We are in the middle of the stut replacement, all the old ones are off and one new one is back on. The front struts are Gabriels' and have very nice looking shiny black paint on them. What we didn't realize until we had one almost all the way on was that the paint is .015" thick. And that .015" is in a place where there isn't space for it! Has anyone else had this problem? We're taking the paint of the bottom of the other one, which makes it only .005" thicker than the stock ones.
