  1. You need the cone washer then the flat washer then install the axle nut to 145ft lbs at least thats what my spec sheet says. And make sure you install a cotter pin. You should be able to look at the other side of your car to see how it should be. Maybe even just pull that side off so you can bring that flat washer to the hardware store if need be.
  2. You may want to state the year and model of your car so people can help ya out not trying to be rude but it helps. Swaping the axles out are pretty easy specially if you buy the right punch to remove the roll pins. Theres a few post that state the tool part numbers in the "transmision" thread at the main page of this site if I remember right. I have personally only done ea81,ea82 and impeza ones though but still not bad to do. But as for the tranny issue I would start by checking all your linkages to be sure you didnt lose any bolts. I had my 80 lose a nut and my linkage losend up and got stuck in first but even then it made a gringing sound when I drove luckily for me I just tightend the bolt and was good to go. Does your clutch feel strange if you just depress it (not trying to drive) can you feel it releasing? Others on here know alot more than me so im sure you will get her figured out. Good luck
  3. Haha! I use that exact excuse. Only a few people have driven my car since I have owned it. Although I hate the slop mines so bad I was forced to remove the plastic trim in order to shift. But im planning on the 5spd swap soon so I hope it shifts better.
  4. I to would put my money on a bad master cylinder I had a ranger that did the same deal I had to pump The brakes to stop then only a few days later I lost some of my brake fluid in the reservoir but none actually leaked out onto the ground. Took the booster off and it had a lot of fluid in it, so mine was leaking internally and thats why my brakes failed. At least its a pretty easy job to do will probably take longer to bleed the system than it will to actually swap out the master cylinder.
  5. Ok well thank you for the link ill now have to decide if im going to cough up the cash for an xt PP or just take my chances with the ea82 set up and just drive her easy, haha that may be hard tough.
  6. So I'm gathering the required parts to do my ej swap into my 80 wagon and was searching for clutch kits to install. It seems they range in price by quite a bit so now Im wondering what brands seem to work best for handling the extra power of the EJ. I have mostly been searching on rockauto but if you know a better site for clutches im all ears. Just curious if you guys know sets to avoid. Thanks
  7. Ill be adding that one to memory for when I come across those impossible to get out bolts. A guy once told me a trick for getting older bolts unstuck, just give the bolt head one or two sturdy taps then try to loosen it. I tried it on a couple rusted bolts and they came right out. Just be sure not to damage the bolt head when tapping on it. And I normally just spray rusted bolts with WD40 or something like it but sometimes you find yourself out of it. haha Thanks for the tip!
  8. Well since the wheels are local ill just go test fit them and see what type of clearences I have im thinking ill be fine with clearing though and im not even 100% sure what my stock offset is now I have seen a few diffrent sites saying different numbers. So I guess It wont hurt to see how they fit.
  9. So I found a set of 15" VW Corrado wheels they have the same 5x100 bolt pattern only differences I can see is they have a +43 offset versus my imprezas +53 offset will this affect anything? like wear out bearings or something? Reason im staying with 15's is becasue I just bought a brand new set of tires that are 15" and I dont want to buy a whole new set of tires. Heres the Specs on the Corrado Rims VW Corrado speed line wheels Wheel diameter (in.)15 Wheel width (in.)6.5 Wheel lug pattern (mm)5x100 Wheel center bore (mm)57.1 Wheel offset (mm)43
  10. I do have the stock 15" steelies on her right now so thats not a problem, ill keep the front disk upgrade on my want/ to do list. I typically have to just wait until I get lucky and find cars in junk yards to be able to upgrade since I usually cant afford an already pulled kit I sometimes see on cragslist or here haha. I did find an 80s turbo wagon and got a set of rear disk for my 80 last summer best part was it was 1/2 off weekend so it was all pretty cheap.
  11. Ok thank you for the info ill be keeping my eyes open for the whole set up next time im at the junk yard. I thought it would be nice to have the extra stopping power when towing my little trailer full of camping gear. Its probably only 200lbs extra weight but when going down steep mountian hills it would be nice having the rear disk.
  12. So the rear disk brakes off a lets say a 92 legacy will work on my impreza? I was at the junk yard last weekend and was kinda mad caise almost all of the legacys I found had rear disk and Im suposed to have a "sport" version impreza and its rear drums. If they do work will it affect the abs system?
  13. Thanks for that link thats a really cool site. I really wish i had a shop so I didn't have to plan every repair in between weather. Apartment life sucks for working on cars haha.
  14. I was just curious as to whether anyone knew is you can swap svx rear disk brakes onto a 98 impreza obs?
  15. Ok im really hoping its not the driveline thats alot of cash to get a new one and I have never found an outback sport in the local pick n pulls. Ill wait until the weekend and pull off the driveline and check it out. Im thinking a fluid change in the trans wouldnt hurt either. I am also wondering if one if the new empi axles could be bad its been a month driving on them and just a few days ago the car started its issues.
  16. This is what the transmission mount looks like on my 98 OBS is there supposed to be a gap like that? Both sides look like this and the rubber will crumble a little when poked at. Im trying to figure out the wierd vibration im getting. checked the driveline it seems fine no play in the jounts that I could detect.
  17. Thanks for all the tips and info guys, guess ill figure out this summer what I decide to do with the plates.
  18. So a few days ago my impreza OBS developed a strange vibration. When I accelerate in 1st gear it will developed a low tone vibration that last for a few seconds then it stops. I then shift to 2nd and it will sometimes do it again lasting just a few seconds. I did install new empi axles about a month ago but up until no it seemed to drive fine. Any ideas on what I should start to look at? I thought it could be a cv joint but I'm kinda doubting it since it only last such a short time.
  19. Good thing you posted this im doing the valve cover gaskets on my 98 obs and I to was wonering if there was any thing to know ahead of time. I did a ranger once that required the ac to be removed to get the drivers valve cover off that sucked!
  20. I like the look of my old yellow and blue plates and the dmv lady wanted to give me the oregon mountian ones. They do have the blue/yellow avalible here again but she said it would cost more every time I renewed my tags after that with those plates. Either she was loading me some bs or the government just found one more way to rip people off. Either way im not super worried until I paint the car then my unpainted plates will probably stand out.
  21. I thought about just painting the plate anf then roughing it up a bit maybe hit it with a preassure washer a little so it appears aged and if I get pulled over for it I could just play dumb haha. Or just leave my plates silver since its been two years that I have been driving it and no troubles from the cops. Knock on wood...
  22. Ill have to do that, im sure im not the only person to have their plates fade and lose thier paint. I know its illegal to just paint the plates what ever color you want but i would think if the person matched the original paint it would be ok. Or at least it seems like it should be.
  23. So I live in oregon and my wagon is 32 this year and its paint is showing its age. Im planning on painting my car this summer. I have the original yellow/blue plates but my rear plate is pretty much silver almost all of its paint is gone. Is it illeagal for me to repaint it if I use reflective yellow and paint it its original colors? The dmv wants a ton for new plates so im not wanting to go that route.
  24. The saftey switches are kinda nice, my 80 wagon has a pretty big dent in it from its previous owner. He had an old truck and parked behing the wagon when he went to leave for work he forgot to put the trucks clutch in and it jumped forward rearending the wagon. Not really a big deal to me but shows that it happens.
  25. Anyone happen to know a part number for a trailer wireing kit for a 98 OBS. Im looking for the kind that just plugs inline cause I really dont want to chop up my wires. I recently got a tow hitch but now need the wireing to tow my trailer for camping this summer. Thanks
