  1. Well I located the fuel relay today. It was a small round silver thing right next to a brown plasic cube like thing that clicked when I turned to key on. The silver relay did not click however is that right or is it bad. Unfortunetly the local part stores are not much help in getting me a new relay. I did jump the 1 and 2 wires on the blue plug that goes to the silver relay. when key is on pump starts pumping but still no start. I was not intending on driving it like that just a simple test to see if she would start.
  2. I checked the rotor today it spins fine. And the set screw appears to be fine also so now im wondering if it is the fuel pump relay.
  3. Ill have to wait until the weekend when I can get a buddy to help check the ditsy. It was just in a shop a few months ago it has new timing belts but I guess they could break still. I really hope its not the belts!
  4. So a few days back my GL broke down luckily in my drive way. After poking around I found out that there is no power going to the fuel pump. I tested the pump by using alligator clips and connecting them to a battery jump box just for a few seconds pump fired right up. So then I tested the connectors and had no juice. I checked all the fuses. And I'm now wondering if the relay went out, but I dont know where it is on these cars can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks 87 GL SPFI
  5. I do like the legacys my dad bought a 92 lego sedan out of a tow yard for $200 and drove it back and forth from work for nearly 5 years. We did the head gauskets once and that was all we ever did to that car. And now its still drivin around the Portland area with 240k on it.
  6. I think when I read this thread it invited a gremlin into my car! Immediately after reading this thread I went out to go to work and my 87 GL would not start. after poking around I think I narrowed it down to the fuel pump. It makes no sound when I turn the key and it used to. I'll replace it this weekend and hope the gremlin moves on fingers crossed!
  7. Wow what beauty and thats cool your teaching your son how to work on cars also. Far to many kids dont know how to work on their own rigs, and when hes older and has a shop do any work he will know if they are trying to rip him off! Good luck on the project shes worth it.
  8. Sorry if this is in the wrong area of the site. But I currently have an 87 Gl and am now wanting a car with a bit more power and reliability. Im debating on moving on to the a Forester or Outback but i am wondering if there are certain years or models that I should avoid. I really cant afford to buy a car that will have allot of problems obviously any car can have issues but if I can avoid the ones known to have issues then hopefully I can do a better job when lookin for my new one. Thanks
  9. Haha Maybe I'll put the liner on out in the middle of my driveway instead of in the barn/shop that I have access to. I doubt the animals in the stables will like the fumes!
  10. Yes they do, check out the Ultimate Subaru Repair Manual found on the main page of the web site. Here is the link to do the swap. http://www.indysworld.com/80s/general/USRM/mick-usrm/transmission/5speed.html This link is from the old USRM also found on the main page. You can hunt around the forum also many have done the swap.
  11. Thank you very much for your reply El Presidente great information! Im not doing the outside of my wagon and I started with the plan to only do the rear cargo area of the wagon. But Im thinking it would be really cool to have the whole inside floor done. I printed out your directions and am now gonna wait until summer when I can clear out a space in my dads barn (full of tractor equipment now) to start the project. I am hoping to have it done by WCSS. Sounds like Ill plan on taking my time on the prep. Im excited to see how she turns out!
  12. So I am thinking about putting the roll on bed liner on the inside of my 80 wagon this summer. I was courious if anyone has had problems with rust forming under the liner after it has been on. My carpet is pretty stinky and nasty and I pulled some of it out in my rear passenger area and found it had some rust but I believe I can easily fix it. I thought It would be much easier to clean water out after wheeling if I got rid of the carpet. Just courious as to what others have done.
  13. Thanks for the link I will look around for more info on the choke I know I probably moved it since when installing it I noticed it was missing one of its small screws so I removed to choke to go buy another screw. I'll have more time to mess with it this weekend. I'll aslo try to find more info on the accelerator pump im sure its just a matter of a few adjustments since she is runnning and driving now.
  14. Well im not sure what jets I am running, I bought the weber from Pooparu some time back and just now got it installed I believe he had said it came off of an EA81 like mine. It fired right up and idles great without me even adjusting it. As for the altitude im right on the Columbia river so not very high maybe 100ft. Im having a bit of trouble with the electric choke but when warm it runs great. I think it does feel like when i "step on it" its temporally not getting enough fuel. Because it will kinda sputter then take off. Which screw on the Weber would have an affect on that? Thanks for the help im an amateur when it comes to carbs.
  15. Well its not that it wants to die it just takes a seccond or to to accelerate. I dont seem to have a vac leak I sprayed carb cleaner on every sonetcion I could find and there was no leaks. She does drive I just cant step on the gas to fast or it will hesitate. If I give her gas and let off a bit then give her more she will accelerate. I doubt thats how it supposed to drive though.
  16. So I just put a weber on my 1980 wagon (motor is out of an 86 hatch) 1.8 EA81. I have it running but I don't like that the carb is touching the top of the distributer. Is this just a matter of getting another adapter plate? The Hitachi had a black plate almost looked plastic but I did not use that one just the adapter plate to mount the weber. I am lifted 4" so I have a lot of room between the hood. I just did not know if its bad to use to many adapter plates I'm new to the carburetor world. Hoping to hear what some of you others have done. Also it seems to have a bit of hesitation when I push on the gas peddle. Did i just not get it tuned completely? I think I still may need to work out some vacuum leaks on her but I'm hoping to be driving her again soon its been a few months.
  17. Hey Pooparu I bought a webber from you several months back and am just now getting around to installing it. So i believe I got all the hardware to install the carb but I not 100% on what "T" conectors I need to go buy for the lines I have a 5/8 one for the vaulve cover breathers, but im unsure what to do with the PCV line whitch i believe is 1/4"? I askin you since most the post I read about it say "well in my cimate i have the hoses like this" I just want it to run good for the pacific northwest. and I herad doing it wrong could make the motor suck oil out of the vaulve cover lines. Thanks! Oh yeah and its an EA81 motor.

  18. My 80 Dl has 186k body and 190k mtor, and my 87 Gl has 238k body previous owner swaped the motor and said it has 140k but who really knows.
  19. Just an idea but when mine 87 Gl would not start it ended up being a single wire that ran from the fusable link box on the drivers side of the engine capartment. Drove me nuts trying to find it because it started out lose then one day came lose but when I fixed it never had an issue again. Just an idea. Hope she starts up soon.
  20. It should be pretty easy to tell if its an ea71 (1.6) or the ea81 (1.8) First look inside if its a dual range trans then its a ea81. Because as far as I am aware no ea71 can use a dual range tranny. I believe it is stamped right on the block. When standing at the front of the car its located on the passenger side of the motor facing the radiator. You will probably need to remove the plastic cover on the front of the motor. I had a ea71 in my 80 wagon but a buddy and I swaped it for a ea81 so I could have the d\r trans. Mine also has a 4" lift and is really fun to drive. And shes gettin a webber carb in a few weeks. Its easy to swap motors also mine only took about 1 day minus some slight tuning time. I would buy her if I was you.
  21. Sorry about your subie, but im really glad you posted this because I was actually going to seafoam my 87 GL tommorow. Guess im not now. Thought it might help my GL's hesitation problem when im accelerating. Thought maybe my injectors are dirty. Good luck getting your ride back on the road.
  22. I cleaned the temp sensor and it may have helped, ill be able to realy tell once its sat all night. Seems to do it worse in the morning.
  23. So I bought an 87 GL (spif) the engine had just been swaped a few months prior. I noticed the PO had ran a wire to the temp switch on the radiator and ran that to the battery. I have a belt driven fan so i sew no need for that and removed it. So does that switch need to have power if i have a manual fan? Recently my car has started to stall out/ spudder when i apply the gas then all of asudden it takes off getting kinda anoying so im gonna check for vac leaks and the coolent sensor.
  24. I recently bought a 1987 GL it had a swaped motor and seems to run great but one problem. The red square warning lights stay on all the time unless i accelerate getting the rpm's above 3k. then they go off until i slow down. Is there a wireing mistake from when the new engine was put in? It has a new alternator but im wondering if its not working as it should.
  25. So after looking at the car again it dose flash 16 times. What dose that mean?
