Nope, that didnt work. The whole thing conducts heat so unless you get it at that split second, it wont work. Mine was constant all the way though, which is why I didnt think it was the radiator. Big radiators are a different story, there is more of an area to check. These little radiators are pathetic when they are new.

Just went through it last week. Aside from the obvious, low coolant, bad thermostat, fan not working.....go with the radiator. $49 on eBay. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=134948

$49 radiator seems to have fixed it. Still doesnt make sense, the flow on the radiator was quite good. Now, onto other issues.....

Did it. Ordered a radiator today, got to start somewhere.

Fan running, single row. Put thermostat back in, filled it up with water and will take a spin after coffee.

Meh....pulled thermostat, flushed it out, used Cascade dish detergent too. Flow is and was fine. Tested thermostat, opens at 180. Drove it 40 miles or so, got 3/4 up the gauge. 90 degrees out, drove it hard. Point and shoot thermometer at the sending unit was about 200.

Heck, I have driven these things for 15 yrs and this is the first overheating problem I have had, shy of a radiator one time.

No leaks, spins freely, no belt slippage, etc. Temps are fairly consistent all around. No hot spots that I can find. I took it out, stuck a hose in it and the water came out as fast as it went in.....both ways. Not sure if the foam wasnt from the fact I just added water to it after it had boiled over a bit ago. I'm in no shape physically to start yanking on an engine. I will if need be but I want to be doggone sure of it before I go that route.

How do you figure water pump? The impeller either goes around or it doesnt. Also, it leaks or it doesnt. Nothing else can go wrong with it.

I'm thinking head gasket or a blockage. Do I pull the engine and do HG's or pull the engine and replace it with one sitting in the shop? It needs dist changed and manifold. Ugh! Actually, I am still not convinced on what it is. Radiator is clean, water pump doesnt leak. After 40 miles, you stop and it boils over....while the temp is still behaving itself. Stumped.....

I dont thing so, the radiator flow is very good with a garden hose in it.

Good point. I kinda get the same degree spread on the rubber hoses. Its surely been hotter than normal here, not sure.

Its 90 outside. I drove 25 miles and temp gauge is on the top side of 1/2 way. Temp readings are as follows: Thermostat housing - 190 Temp sending unit - 200 Passenger side radiator tank - 170 Drivers side radiator tank - 205 Passenger side hose is like the tanks, about 30 cooler than drivers side. I'm stumped.

Radiator seems to have good flow. Going to have to drive it today and see.

Thermostat was changed the other day, thats not it. No dealer around, no radiator shop. I will pull the radiator tomorrow and see how it handles a flush. Just checking to be sure I didnt miss anything.

To my knowledge there are only 2 thermostats you can get, 195 and 180 or 185, I forget. The water pump goes round and round, no leaks. Not much that can go wrong with it.

Kinda at a dead lock here. Its running 3/4 the way up the gauge all of a sudden. Wife burst a hose, I replaced it, replaced thermostat as well, did a 185 I think it was. Temp on the thermostat housing is about 195. No bubbles. The radiator is about 20 degrees hotter on the drivers side, I think it was around 220ish. Thinking about yanking the radiator tomorrow and back flushing it. Ideas?
