Under this plug: http://picasaweb.google.com/pmilne/Misc/photo#5104288466642083922

You mean a 'sniffer' that goes up the tailpipe?? I've not seen one here. I dont doubt that they are everywhere in the populated areas. Heck, we just got colored TV here last year.

I am sure you know there is a set rule for adjusting a carb by ear. First, you need to take into consideration elevation. You dont have that issue in Wisc. Here, we run 3000-6000', which these vehicles weren't tuned or jetted for. Higher elevations is going to richen your mix due to thinner air. When you do adjust a carb by a tach or by ear, you can get it to its highest rpm, then to be safe, you can richen it a little bit, from there. This is how we did it in the days before all the fancy gadgets. Dwell meter and a tach. We do this for all 2 strokes and for any other older vehicle that was equipped with a idle mix screw. You are correct though, too lean is bad. I dont recall ever seeing a 4 stroke that you could adjust too lean. Checking plugs is a good gauge when in doubt. Anyone that is mechanical should be able to tell when their rig is running too lean or too rich. Gas analyzers? Not to be found in this area.

No, I mean the idle air mixture screw that is normally blocked by a plug. http://picasaweb.google.com/pmilne/Misc/photo#5104288466642083922

Carb is back on and one thing I need to mention. The air mixture screw did need adjusting and it does make a noticable difference, adjusting by ear. I dont have a purring idle, instead of a lumpy one.

Woohooo...they all came out!! What do I torque these at when I put it together?
-
I'm surprised no one has thought of an impact wrench, on low, in bursts.
-
Reading all the fun issues regarding intake bolts, I thought I would take a try at it. I got about 3 of them to break loose. The others just want to flex. I didnt try too hard though. Do you think an impact wrench would have less negative effects than brute strength? I'd love to get these off without breaking them. :/
-
Well, I do believe there is a replacement one in the rebuild kit. Not positive, but thought I saw one.
-
Sorry, I meant idle mixture screw. :/ I am rebuilding the carb and I WANT to get at it. I figure if I am going to go through the fuss of a rebuild, I ought to at least see what the screw looks like. The rebuild kit says something like 4 turns from a soft seat.

How do I get this out? It a Hitachi off of an EA82. Underneath it is the idle adjustment screw. It almost looks like just a soft plug. http://picasaweb.google.com/pmilne/Misc/photo#5104288466642083922

Paint job anyone? I can see gobs of you doing this. http://www.rickwrench.com/50dollarpaint.html

So far, it seems to have been the anti-diesel thingy.

I did the intake, nothing. I looked at the front for a while. How do you get that thing off? Its right between 2 vacuum hose fittings, right? Interesting post: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=57524&highlight=adjust+carb

Nope, it wasnt the wires or anything ignition related. I think you are yanking my chain, there is no idle mix screw on the front. At the bottom center there is a aluminum piece with a threaded plug in it [that you cant get out]. It kinda flops around a little, whats that? Used carb cleaner and didnt find much that way either. Carb is plenty clean now though. :/

SPFI is more reliable than a carb??? There is no room for breaking down in this country, its a long, lonely, dark, cold walk if you break down. EGR valve is gone, so its down to 1 vacuum hose for the distributor. I forget about the choke wire. The surely dont want you to be able to adjust the choke on these, do they? Interesting about the Hitachi. Glad I found out before I tried it.
-
I'll give that a go too, thanks. Nothing around for 120 miles. I have no interest in an injected engine. I like carbs....except for this one. :/ I like simple carbs. 1 vacuum hose and no wires. Didnt know about the Pinto being a Weber. Whats it like to rebuild a Hitachi?
-
I'll do wires and such today. As far as all those other things and "t's" and such, they are all gone. If the throttle shaft was leaking, it would give me lean. I'll find that screw and see what it does. What I had to do in the meanwhile was to turn the idle screw up about 1 turn, so it would idle. It seems to be worse when it is cool out. I manually played with the choke and that has no effect. I sure wish someone would come up with a carb switch for these. You know, a basic simple carb, like a Carter YF. The Weber doesnt impress me. Maybe a carb off a Pinto or something. If someone had a spare Hitachi they didnt need, I'd rebuild it and go from there.
-
I've had this car for 7 years with no hoses on it, and it has run great, never an issue. If the screw is of no use, it is there..........why? Can you point me to the bowl vent?? I'd glady stick a hose on it to see what happens.
-
Its carbed. There are only 3 vacuum hoses on this thing. All the others are plugged. I replugged the dead one and the others are hooked up. I think I was told there is an idle mixture screw, but it is of no effect if you adjust it. Doesnt make sense, so I never persued it. It is running rich, but no idea how to lean it out. Choke is fully opened. It is the Hitachi carb.
-
Heres whats going on........... I changed plugs, which were real bad. The gap was burned out to about 1/8", they were worn!! Put plugs in, gapped them to whatever they should be .044 I think it was. The thing has a horribly rough idle now. It feels like a vacuum leak but I have checked everywhere and found nothing. I bumped the timing up a little bit too, to see how that would work. The thing runs great and plenty of snap [for what it is]. What am I missing?? Its something that you would cure on a normal carb by adjusting the idle screw.

Idle mix screw, '86 EA82 Hitachi?
opus replied to opus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
All but the needed lines are gone. There must be 6 caps total, just guessing. most were gone when I got it. I yanked the rest out years ago. This is a very bare engine. Yes, they are NGK's. -

I've done both of them...nothing so far. I think I will ditch all the vacuum plugs and drop a dab of epoxy in the holes and let it sit over night. It could be a cracked nipple plug, which I doubt. -

So you are saying it is unlike a normal automobile carb, as far as adjusting the idle mix. I can do that by ear on all my other rigs. Then why would it be idling rough with new plugs installed? Before it idled fine but the plugs were shot. The gap was burnt out to, well....a very big gap. Terrible time hot starting now and then. -
Is there one? I cant seem to find it if there is. Thing is idling horribly since I put new plugs in it.
