'86 GL10 Turbo wagon rear calipers
opus replied to opus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok, ok.... Napa didnt have rear calipers, only piston rebuild kits. I searched here a bit deeper and someone pointed to Rock Auto. Sure enough they had loaded rear calipers for something like $36 a piece. So, whatever the question, Rock Auto is the answer. -

opus replied to opus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I found an alternator bracket of a spare EA82, so I'm good to go. -

How did I ever get by without A/C for the past 40 years? -
Disregard, solved it.

BirdMobile "Under the Hood" Photos - for Opus

Thanks for the pix, that's sure clean. My '86 is about that naked, now if I could make my '86 turbo look that naked! -
Deleting AC compressor '86 Turbo GL
opus replied to opus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Pictures, yes! So I'll pull the alternator and that one bolt and the compressor comes off....apparently. You know, I have a spare ea82 [no AC] in the shed. If it has alternator bracket on it I could use it. -

What must I replace? Is there more to pulling the compressor? I looked but cant see a whole lot til I start pulling things. -
Doesnt work, under hood is mega crowded with it, I want it gone. Ok to pull the compressor and hoses? I can only see 1 bolt holding compressor bracket on...has to be more than that? Matter of fact, I want to yard out whatever I can under the hood. What are my options?

OK, thats what I wanted to know. Thanks!

First time for me. I know I need this: http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/Timken/Wheel_Bearing/TM513056.html I am assuming that it one bearing and race. Where's the rest of what I need [beside seals]? Do I need another race or just a bearing? Thats a big race, are there 2 bearings in it, etc? Why cant I find a rear outer wheel bearing for a 4wd?

Carburetor Altitude Compensation
opus replied to JustGo_GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Long time ago when we were going up high and couldnt re-jet, we'd crack a valve we had in a vacuum line. -
A Soob engine without oil all over it is about like a Detroit diesel without oil everywhere...pretty slim. Sounds like you might have a short in your sending unit gauge or wire. How bad is the oil...got a pic??
-
New plugs, found a vacuum leak as well. Little Seafoam sucked into the intake and some in the tank. Runs pretty good now. Idle is kinda high though.

Carburetor Altitude Compensation

Homestake Pass in Butte is about twice the elevation of 4th of July. Long climb heading west. -
180k on it. I doubt they've been off. Wasnt sure if there were any sensors or things like that, that should be cleaned. Did I say the O2 sensor is new too.
-
I've owned it for a week. Havent a clue. I'm starting by replacing the Autolite spark plugs. Then I'll run some Seafoam through it....then I'll......

Ok, the 2 copper heavy spades I understand. The brass trigger volt spade I understand. That means the left over brass spade is ground....correct? Nothing happens. The green connector doesnt run the pump like it should. I am thinking there is a ground issue but not sure. If in fact the other brass spade is for a ground, I can ground that somewhere and see what happens. I didnt want to do anything til I was sure. I saw the diagram on the relay but none look like they are ground. In a headlight relay there is a ground spade. O2 sensor is new. Trying to figure out why it starts hard.

I had to jump the fuel pump relay. Here's my issues for now: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/146924-86-gl10-turbo-mpfi-questions/
-
1: this is my absolute first go around with fuel injection. 2: Is there an "idle mixture" adjustment? It starts hard and smells rich. Stumbles up through 2100 or so. Once it warms up its ok. 3: fuel filter; just 1 black metal canister above the brake booster? 4: The fuel pump relay under the dash. PO put a new relay in and it wouldnt run. The only way I can get it to run is to jump the big power wire to the big blue wire. One of the smaller wires always have 12v to it. What is the 4th wire for? [Green test connectors do not cycle the fuel pump]

I've been tooling around in my '87 Brat and '86 GL Wagon for the past 15 yrs. Seems I bought an '86 GL Turbo 5 spd wagon today. My, theres an awful lot of stuff under the hood. It wouldnt run for the guy so I got it running. Took it for a spin...I actually giggled. What a difference from what I've been driving! Reminded me of when I was a kid, driving my '65 Malibu SS with a 396....well, almost. I'm getting too old for these projects.
