  1. Isn't there a pair of green leads that you can connect to activate some self tests, or is that only on an EJ? I haven't played with my SPFI setup in years.
  2. You are at the right place! There is an incredible amount of talent lurking around on here Figuring out the problem will require some additional information. When did it happen and how, were you just driving along and it died? Have there been any recent repairs to the car? Make sure the distributor rotor is firmly attached to the shaft. The little screw likes to fall out and that can cause a no-start. Like others have said ^^^^ you will need to find out if it's a lack of fuel, lack of spark, or a mechanical problem of some sort, timing belt etc.
  3. That transistor is used to drive the ignition coil. Mitsubishi used to call this part a power transistor and another manufacturer calls it an amplifier. I don't know what Subaru's proper name for it is. If it goes bad the engine will not start and there won't be any spark. It's not a bad idea to have an extra one in the spare tire well with some other goodies
  4. I am pretty sure that I used EA82 (non turbo) axles with inboard double offset joints from a '90's FWD Legacy. It took some fooling around to find a set where the splines matched up but it works like a champ. I might have more pictars if you need them.
  5. Is it a manual transmission? If so it could be a broken or damaged Dual Mass flywheel. If it's an Automatic transmission car I am not sure. Good Luck
  6. There are some pictures in my Royal Loyale thread of an EJ engine and trans in an EA82 body. The drive shaft had to be cut by 55mm or about 2". As I recall the cross-member is a mix of XT6 and Legacy parts. It is a bolt in fit. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/145759-royal-loyale/?hl=royal
  7. It looks really nice from the pictures. I suggest checking all the usual areas for rust. I would also make sure to carefully look over the entire cooling system. Like others said ^^^^ keep the fluids full and clean. Once you get it, if you decide too, I would go over the entire car. Check out the brake system completely including the soft and hard lines. Make sure that the entire suspension system is safe including wheel bearings and tires. These are great cars. Good Luck!
  8. You'll need to do your homework on this one. Some machine shops will require the pistons in hand for measurements before they can bore the case halves.
  9. Does the car have a manual transmission? I would check to make sure the hill holder cable isn't adjusted to tight.
  10. Is it a "timing or detonation ping" or an actual knock? Why is it 10:1 compression if it's a real EA81T with stock dished pistons? It should be closer to 8.0:1 as I recall. I personally wouldn't operate an old EA81T at "sustained full throttle" for very long Secondly you didn't mention what was done with the crank and rods? It may be about ready to throw a rod if the bearings haven't been looked over. Does it have new pistons and rings as well? These engines are over 30 years old by now. Keep us posted and good luck!
  11. I would be interested in 1 or maybe 2 depending on what the price is.
  12. You must refer to the Subaru FSM procedure for adjusting the hydraulic style of lifters on an EA81. It is in the 1983 and 1984 factory service manuals. Someone has scanned and posted it in these forums in the past.
  13. It sounds to me like you may have a hydraulic lifter style EA81. The valve adjustment procedure for these is much different than a solid lifter engine. Once the hydro style lifters are setup initially they should not need to be adjusted again. The hydro style rocker arm can be identified by locking tabs folded over each adjustment nut. If you really do have a solid lifter engine then you may have some serious valve train problems. It should be no problem getting new or good used valves for an EA81 engine. Good luck!
  14. You should be able to find the information that you need by reading the wiring sections of this document. http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/mroseusa/EA2EJ.pdf
  15. Sorry to hear this. Heaters seem to fail when it's really cold, wipers fail in the rain, and power windows always seem to stick down in the rain Might want to check the resistor block too just to be safe. Good Luck!
  16. It's a heavy duty commercial grade garbage bag commonly used for construction cleanup, hense the name.
  17. October 2015 had arrived and I was reaching a low point. Unemployment benefits were about to run out in a week, savings stressed out, and no prospects in sight. I decided to drop off one last copy of my resume at a local independent repair shop with a really good reputation. It turns out that some former customers had been 'dropping my name' unbeknownst to me. I recieved a call back exactly 29 years to the day (10/20/2015) that I was hired for my last job. My interview was the next day on the 21st and I was hired. I don't exactly understand how it happened, but I am starting to believe that faith really can help get you through some tough times. I made it through the first few weeks and I just recieved my first paycheck in 6 months! I thought it was time to update this thread with some good news. Here is a quick peek at the new 'sandbox' I play in
  18. R.O. Writer http://www.rowriter.com/ is a complete solution, runs on Windows, and it's easy to use. I am currently using R. O. Writer and it includes everything from the timeclock application, online parts ordering, tech efficiency and flat-rate time management, complete repair order management, vehicle record keeping, etc. There are also a lot of functions only seen and used by the business owner which I am not in this case. With All-Data (or insert your preference here) these two packages should cover most if not all of your needs. YMMV - I have no affiliation with these company. On the flip side of the coin I personally found that a package called something like ERA Technician Dispatching Software is some of the hardest non-user friendly software I have ever tried and failed to learn.
  19. Take the three small bolts out of the govenor housing, remove unit to clean and inspect the gear, and re-install. Not much to it and no fluid loss.
  20. I used an EA radiator and found some hoses that worked.
