You picked a good commuter in my opinion. You are in a great part of the country for used parts from the local Pick-N-Pull type yards too. Thanks for sharing it! I'll be watching this one for sure By the way, mine needed an interior also. I found a low mileage wreck at pick-n-pull and pulled the entire interior, fasteners and all. I went on 50% off day and it cost about $35.00. After cleaning the carpet and re-installing everything it looks really nice. While I had the interior out I washed the entire shell out with purple power degreaser to eliminate odors. I also ran audio and power cables to the rear at the same time.

Harbor Freight tools to avoid or not expect much from
Crazyeights replied to idosubaru's topic in Shop Talk
I have been using a HF engine hoist at work (in a commercial setting) for years. It's solid as a rock and folds up as well. I have been through several Hydraulic rams over the years, but that is expected. I am using the two ton version. -
I bought an EJ22E last year that was pulled from a wreck (so I knew it ran). The car was beautiful so I knew that they probably maintained it. It had 143,000 miles on it at the time of the wreck. I paid $250.00 plus tax from Pick-N-Pull with a 1 year extra warranty. It was complete with all the accessories. It turned out to be a great engine! It's in my Loyale right now in fact. You should win either way in my opinion! Have Fun

I don't know the situation and I could be way off base. You do realize that these engines are easily available for very little money if you shop right. There really isn't a good finacial reason to re-assemble these. From the looks of the crankshaft in the picture this engine will need some attention before it put back together. I would polish and mic the crank at the very minimum. I am not trying to offend you or rain on your project in any way. It could be a good learning experience Good Luck!

You might also want to check and see if the radiator is plugged up or restricted. This can also cause the temperature to creap up at speed. Good on your Grandson, sounds like a tech in the making

Transmission overhaul kits?
Crazyeights replied to wilsonjacob8's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Correct. If there is an aftermarker source I have not been able to find it. Perhaps others have. -
My GL ^^^ handles great for what it is. I can cruise comfortably and effortlessly all day long on the freeway at 80+ if needed. It will pretty much GO ANYWHERE that I have the stones to take it, and in any weather too There is easily enough power to make most passengers concerned, and certainly enough to break something. It sounds and drives like the factory made it. I used SJR parts to do mine, but that was just a personal preference. It runs as smooth as glass, would easily pass emissions if it had to (it does not). Ironically the entire time I owned it with the original EA81 carb'd engine it would always fail I have buried the stock speedo more than once and it feels really solid. I wasn't the least bit terrified I backed off long before the car would. Have fun and Good Luck! Once you start a project like this you likely cannot go back. Your Brat will be a completely new car with all new driving and handling characteristics. It will feel like a monster in comparison, make sure that is what you want. There is something to be said for a properly rebuilt EA81 with a 5 speed dual range as well. That is another of my favorite combinations.

Transmission overhaul kits?
Crazyeights replied to wilsonjacob8's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
^^^This, what he said. Unless you only need one or two bearings and a pair of synchros. Just these items and all of the seals (if you can still get them) will surprise your wallet big time. -
I have done most of the mods you mentioned to my 1983 GL Wagon. It's a great car and I would do it again in a heartbeat. It's SO MUCH fun to drive. In addition to your specs it has a custom built Full Time 3.9 ratio dual range trans, Clutch Style 3.9 LSD Rearend, and lots more. Go for it! Your Brat won't be stock anymore it will be Better in my opinion! Please start a thread in members rides once you get going! Good Luck!

Transmission overhaul kits?
Crazyeights replied to wilsonjacob8's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You aren't likely to find a complete "overhaul kit" for this transmission in the normal sense. I have had many of these apart including some custom builds and even a swap to 3.9 ratio. What type of problems are you having that would warrant a rebuild ? It could be just a bearing or two. I usually do the 1st and 2nd gear synchros as well as all of the seals. -
The problem it seems is time. Once a person reaches the point where they can do this sort of work, there time becomes scarce and valuable. Hopefully you can find the right talent at the correct price for you. Either way it is a LOT of work and it will be costly. I have done it. Good Luck, in my opinion it is well worth it if your body is solid.

Wow from 2004 as well. You get a gold star for digging that up

@Manier89 It looks like you are new here! Welcome, you have a nice rare car if it's an EA81T. Please check out the "members rides" area. You can start your own thread with lots of pictures I would like to see it.

I have 2 Digi clusters out on the bench to play with again with this new info. Mine might be DOA though. Good Luck with your project! I am quite interested to find out how this works out for you.

Thank you for all that you have done with this!
