  1. Great progress! I like Brats and especially a good rescue story I just got up to speed on all of the details in this thread and I can't wait to see what happens next! Nice work space BTW. I like the lifted red EA82 Wagon with tinted windows in the background too
  2. Interesting. They kind of remind me of an old Cushman.
  3. @Wolfman01 It sure looks like that to me too! I have 2 other EA82 engines I'll have to look at them if I can see anything on those. Specifically the EA82T (only the Turbo version) has a poor reputation because they lack power even when turbocharged. They overheat easily, and blow head gaskets really quickly. The design of the cooling system internal to the engine has flaws in the way that the coolant circulates. In my opinion this cannot be easily corrected. I suggest watching the coolant temperature on these and perhaps even adding an overheat alarm like is used in some marine applications. They are not very forgiving if they get abused or neglected. They will also crack cylinder heads like egg shells especially on the right side where the Turbo is. Part of that problem is the lack of an Intercooler from the factory The stock EA82 (non turbo version) will run almost forever it seems even without proper maintenance. That version is an exceptionally good engine reliability wise, it's just not very efficient. Once you fix all of that and put it back together the EA82T WILL almost always develop a rod knock due to all of the extra heat and pressure from the Turbo. Now you are back in to the lower end for pistons and a crank. Most people will give up long before this point and buy a Legacy. I say that an EA82T built stock and driven as intended by Subaru can last quite a while when properly maintained. I would put it's reliability in this situation up against many of the newer vehicles that I work on. I am seeing really bizarre and unexpected failures on newer lower mileage vehicles due to apparent cost cutting measures is design. I don't think the newer crop of vehicles will be around as long as cars made before about 2004 or so but that may just be me I spend more time around machines than people so...
  4. I noticed that too. They look like Calmasters missing the center caps. I am trying to move away from 13" rims or I would have asked him about them.
  5. Now for the rescue part. All people and things have a past, this is a real rags to riches story. Look at what red85celica had to work with not even a year ago More to follow...
  6. Thank you for your kind words and yes I agree she is the best! She actually has more cars than I do including some classics. I'll post some pictures of her Snow-White themed 1965 T-Bird with a 390 Tri-Power and a C6. I wouldn't own any Subarus if she hadn't convinced me to buy my first one. It's a Lightning Silver 1983 GL 4x4 Wagon and we still own it. It's a lifted snotty little EJ swapped 'tuff guy' right now.
  7. Finally I manage to own one of these that rust hasn't attacked yet! The Lil baby stock turbo still hiding in it's original shielding. I forgot how TOASTY WARM these little snails run. I took this picture ^^^ after idling down from a little drive. Although the engine was running at normal temp when I took these photos, you could feel the 'Heat Wave' coming from the Turbo area. I can see why an Intercooler would help greatly by extending engine life. Over $4000.00 in receipts for mechanical repairs over the last 10 years or so. The list includes a fairly recent pair of new heads, radiator, water pump, timing belts, etc. Also low mileage JDM 4EAT transmission was installed at about 180k from the looks of the paperwork. Much more to come...
  8. I have a stack of pictures ready to go. Finally figured out the drop box account! They sure don't make it easy for an old dog. Like I said before, I seem to be better at working on these things than posting pics. I finally won... [EDIT] Drop Box seems to be the ticket for now. Had to read up on the right hoops to jump through to make it work.
  9. I am pretty sure that I really didn't need another old EA82 Wagon. I was just looking late one night at red85celica's thread basically saying the same thing... and also thinking about how cool it is The things we do for these old cars. Then my wife looks over and says, "whats that?" I said "oh just another old Turbo wagon." Expecting that to be the last of it I went on to read about one of my other many projects. She asks me, "where is it?" I said, "I think it's down south somewhere." "In this state? Lets go get it, call him right now!" I'm thinking wow it's almost 11:00 pm on Christmas Eve and this guy is going to think I am nuts! I called him anyway and left a message. Two days later and we own it! red85celica is a super nice guy and a really good tech. I am humbled by his projects 'Turbo' has some issues and I am prepared to deal with them all. I know the EA82T horror stories all too well. Please with all due respect, help by offering knowledge and support, or save the negative comments for another thread. We have 4 EA Wagons (2 are EJ swapped) and an 04 L-GT. Here is the new little bull in 946 Rio Red; Thank you red85celica More to come...
  10. Double check all the basics first, cam timing, ignition timing, general engine mechanical condition, IE compression or leak-down test passed. Check for current and history codes. Failing any help there, check fuel system pressure and filters, and the coolant temp sensor. Next replace the TPS if a high mileage vehicle and verify that the MAF is good and working. More of these cars than you think by now have the check engine light pulled out due to re-occuring purge and egr solenoid failures. You can do a simple vacuum test to see if the cat is restricted. Once all of the faults are corrected - and this is the important part - (it is a really simple system) then these engines run very well. If you are driving around an SPFI system in fault mode (IE a code is set for any reason) then the engine is not running as designed IMO.
  11. Another "Nico" build, schooled again Amazing as always! Thank you for sharing your awesome resto-mod threads and the nice comment about my own Loyale Wagon! How do you find all of the rare JDM parts? BTW you need a coffee cup holder ^^^ ASAP Happy New Year!
  12. Ya it sounds great with the header on
  13. So far I am very pleased with the this car! It is a good daily driver and it's surprisingly fast with the EJ22E that's in it now. I should be able to finish the A/C re-connect. I am currently looking at the SPAL 10" fans for cooling and it looks like it may just leave enough room for an R134 A/C compressor. I think I have paused long enough at this phase to make sure I haven't introduced any new nagging problems or noises. I didn't want to bite off more than I could chew and never end up completing the project. That's why I try and work in phases taking time to drive the car for a while in between each major step. When I am ready I hope that the EJ22T swap will be a fairly straight forward exchange. The E22T is almost fully assembled. The intake manifold and hard lines still need to go on. I am using the factory turbo with the stock exhaust stock manifolds, cross-over, and up pipe. I already have them, they fit, and they are all in great shape. I also have the (2) solenoids that mount on the fender for boost control. Last year I won an Ebay auction for a factory Subaru WAIC kit from New Zealand complete with the factory heat exchanger, all of the hard and soft lines, mini radiator, pump, etc. I'll get it running without this first. I would like to set it up though if I have room. If not, it will go on another car. I have done some more reading and it looks like I can use my current EJ22 clutch setup. It's still fairly new so being able to transfer those parts will be a bonus. I'll have to figure out the exhaust between what I have now underneath to where the turbo lets out. I hope I can find some standard pipe that will fit there. If not I'll have something made up. Happy New Year! More soon...
  14. Either the cord is bad or you need a new block heater I would say. You should be able to test it with an ohm meter. Happy (COLD) New Year!
  15. Welcome and Happy New Year! Beautiful work, thank you for sharing some of your pictures.
  16. Cool, I'll check with my local shop tomorrow and see if they can handle it or not just in case. This has happened to me at work before on other engines
  17. I know a machine shop that can get that out for you. If you have too, just ship the one half to me and be patient. I will try and get it handled for you. Shipping to and from Edmonds, Wa though If you decide to go this route PLEASE don't touch it first!! -Jeff
  18. Gotcha, well it will be really cool if you get it done. At least one other member here cut the top off of the rear of an EA wagon and made a pretty cool rig out of it too.
  19. How about using doors off of an EA82 3 door. They should be a bit wider.
  20. There is more information to be found with Google. It was a racing only flat 12 as I recall. I don't think it was able to compete well at the time. Looks like it could be yours! http://www.motorsport-sales.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=320&products_id=3340
  21. Nice fab job but no clue here and I own an EA81 rig
  22. It always assumed those were dealer added options. It's just 3 wires to a 120 volt outdoor plug. Napa should have a replacement cord I would think, it looks like the same style I have seen on many engines.
