I just had my memory jarred by a recent issue of HOt ROD magazine. Smokey Yunick died while I still lived in Florida (not far from his shop) .While they were having a big garage sale of performance parts , the newspaper mentioned they would not sell his 80mpg Ford aspire with a hot vapor engine. The new issue of hot rod has an article on a hot vapor fiero a guy put back together. It makes 1.8hp / ci and gets 60mpg. Basically it heats the intake charge until it is 450 deg f entering the cylinder. Actually too hot to cause engine destroying detonation. Anyone trying something like this or just heard about it?

Sesh's 1987 GL Build Thread

You will want to get rid of that nylon oil tube before it's a year old. I lost my first subaru engine back in 92 to one of those things snapping off at the pump. I almost lost my Samurai motor to one of them too. I was going to replace it with a copper tube and the nylon one snapped when I touched it. They get brittle quickly. -
TCU location and troubleshooting

the latest drama from Evan's garage... with the engine off , the dipstick read way overfull , I drained probably 3 qts! (?) I tested the ECU ( ok ) with fluid let out it would start and run. Changing blown hose under intake was an ordeal but it is done. I think I got the tranny fluid level just right and unhooked the battery so everything is probably reset. I changed the turbo coolant hose while I was at it and it seems to drive great. Will check on the highway when I have more time. My Samurai is now fs on ebay , hoping to score a dual range wagon to replace it if you know of one. -

I don't think it was ever removed. It onhly has 124k on it and spent 7 yrs sitting in a field. We have driven it to California and back with no problems. I will test the tcu this afternoon. -
Steering wheel death shake

check and make sure lugs are tight. If a rim is bent , the tire store should have told you. I think somebody put the weights on in the wrong spot. Even 28" swampers did not shake my soob. -
Car : 88 gl10 sedan turbo EA82 awd. Tranny 4eat , started slipping or possibly just dropped out of gear on highway , looked a little low on fluid, went and added some more ( a little overfull ), 2oo yds down the road same thinf. It now won't run - stalls motor like torque convertor won't unlock. A member with a good trans told me it could be tcu. Where is it at and what can I do to test it. I may need to purchase a good one and am not sure if I also need to get another trans shipped from KY or what. Car is already in friend's garage up on jackstands. I understand tc solenoid is opposite the others on valve body - could I unplug it from harness without opening pan and see if it will run?

just got a 87 gl10 turbo sdn for $250!!!
swampbrat replied to Subruise's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Mine was stuck when I got it ( greay 88 gl10). I bought another turbo off a board member and took my old one apart - had a weird chunk of metal wedged in it (?) it stopped the vanes but did no damage , so now I have a good spare. -
If it is just one strut , the o rings are tiny and cost just pennies. I would probably fix it. On ours ALL the fittings leaked and the compressor cylinder walls were heavily scored. I bought a $200 wagon and put the struts on from it. One strut squeaks a little and the back sits kinda hi. But oh well.

need awd auto trans please
swampbrat replied to swampbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
More problems... I got some atf and checked the level properly , a little over full, still pink , it tries to stall the motor like the convertor won't slip. Any ideas? -
my wife's 88 gl10 tranny went out yesterday. :confused:Anyone have one in good shape ( working order )? If so please pm me . This is our only car that holds the family and does highway speeds. I will check my messages every chance I get ( will be out of town all weekend - in a rental car). If you know of a good trans shop in the four corners region or even as far as vegas/slc/phoenix , it would be worth it to me. I only want to take this thing out once. Otherwise I am willling to drive a ways to get one or pay for freight. Thanks!!!!

back on the board and old gen section
swampbrat replied to subaru_styles's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah , since you left wagons have become uncool, you don't want kids talking smack about you! I'll take it off your hands if you pay the shipping. -
what year and options would be a good ej candidate? How extensive are the mods to fit it? Napa only lists that 935 unit not the 1269 part on that web site. Still looking- as long as I have it fixed befor July 10th.

Anyone have a two row radiator in their ea82 that has the aftermarket part # for it or a number I can cross reference? Thanks!

Been a long time but I remember the high side dropout is behind the passenger side headlight. The low side....I think was up higher nearer the firewall. After you get the first 12 oz or so in it should start cycling - do you have a scale?

wagon to ute/pickup conversion?
swampbrat replied to LPGsuperchargedBrumby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Back on the old board about 10 yrs ago, a guy posted pics of his wagon. He moved the b pillar back to fit the doors off a 2 door on it. Looked cool, wonder if he ever finished it. -

Thanks guys, looks like I will be using the plasma cutter for this one.

My searches are coming up empty...is the ea82 turbo the same flange pattern as a t3? I have come across some t3 flanges already cut which would save me a lot of time fabbing up and down pipes. Thanks!

Subaru engine flat 4 or 6 into a Suzuki Samurai
swampbrat replied to Jaime's topic in Subaru Transplants
serious resurrection ... On the old board there was a guy with an ea81 and dual range mounted in the rails of a sammy - don't know if his project ever got finished but he had at least one blurry pic up. -
Mine is fuel injected so I wouldn't have all the carb mods at least. I do worry a little about fuel lean out. I thought my pump was going since it started hard after running but apparantly that isn't the case. Maybe my fuel injector doesn't like to work after warming up. My rebuild helped a lot though, it spins 7k and has good torque. Would love to take a peek at his exhaust header!
