Converting '82 GL-10 wagon from FWD-->4WD?
BoneCake replied to BoneCake's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Thanks. Is there an EA81 D/R 5sp? I thought I had heard of it, but I wasn't sure. If so, would it be a direct swap? -
I have done some searching on this site and have not come up with much on this topic... mostly swapping the 4sp EA81 tranny to a 5sp EA82 and other various transfers. I know at the very least I need EA81 rear 4wd swingarms/hubs, a rear transaxle and 4wd tranny with a final drive that matches and the diff support (moustache bar) and a driveshaft.... but can some of it come from a Loyale (driveshaft, tranny, etc.)?

Puget Sound Area Old School motor specialist?
BoneCake replied to ErikAnderson's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I only know of Pacific Import Auto down near Tacoma... They did my STi swap and they are well versed in all Subarus, especially early gen. The owner was a Subaru Master Mechanic for 20+ years before he went on his own with this business a couple of years ago. First of all... your EA81 (ALL EA81s) has only ONE cam, so it would be cheaper than say an EA82 cam regrind. Second, and most important, I merely gave the guy a website that had performance parts for an EA81. It really doesn't matter that the website is based on airplane motors, IT IS STILL AN EA81! With their products, your motor will probably make the HP/TQ at a higher rpm, but it will still make the power. Period. He did not specify if he was looking for low-end or top-end power. If someone wants to pay top dollar for good parts, let them be... it's their choice.

Cupid must have gotten drunk...
BoneCake replied to BoneCake's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks. I did a search over the weekend and was all over that site... lots `o helpful info there. I would really like to get it and lift it a little (maybe 2") and use it as a serious auto-crosser or rally car, but it seems like it would make an awesome daily driver for commutes. I love my TS, but a boosted engine sucks for city driving and kills my wallet at the pumps. -

Yes... I must say that the ER27 is one of the smoothest motors I have ever heard. The air shocks all work fine, but I know how that goes. The stock radio is gon with a big void in it's place. I don't know if the housing is cracked. Interior is near flawless, but the rear decals and trunk stripe are faded. -
Sad to say, it happened. After all these years of looking at XT/XT6s and thinkin "what kind of dope was the designer smokin", I have been bitten and now I can't shake it. I have had my eye on an `88 XT6 AWD AT and I think I am gonna have to buy it, despite the problems they are known to have. I can deal with the probs (air suspension, oil leaks, etc.) but is there something I am missing about this car that may make me change my mind? It is black, no rust, 90k on the ticker, clean looking underhood (well-maintained) and the owner wants $1500 obo.

RAM Performance (140hp N/A EA81)
BoneCake replied to BoneCake's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I was not necessarily looking at the long blocks but the custom dual-carb manifolds and forged piston kits. The bore and stroke are the same, but the cam profiles in those motors is what sets it apart from a torquey low-end setup... who says you need to run the same cam? Anyways, the peak torque curve usually comes at about 2k rpm for these motors, and torque is what is needed for crawling. Just imagine if you added a turbo or supercharger to that motor and had it tuned... -
Has anyone ever heard of the place? http://www.ramengines.com/index.html A little pricey, but if you want the best for your EA81... They have custom made heads and intakes and forged piston sets. EDIT: Sorry for the huge pics...

AC problem...fix it or ditch it?
BoneCake replied to nutt7's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Dude, have you ever been to Phoenix? I'm sure that 110 degrees in the shade doesn't feel too nice without AC. I say find a way to keep it and upgrade to a 2-core radiator (if your car does not have one already). -
I just posted that eBay link to try and help a brutha out... I did not know about the 390 issue. Sorry

Sorry, I guess I should have waited for somone with the same generation car to post. I have a new generation WRX wagon.

I call BS on your mechanic. He is just trying to charge you out the rump roast for labor. Your exhaust system is complex, consisting of turbo piping, but it can all be accessed from underbody. Go find a (honest) Subaru mechanic.
