  1. Well, it seems to have fixed itself, at least for now. I already had a can of restore, so I went ahead and put it in. No more smoke though.
  2. @GD Not plugged, just around it so that less oil makes it into the air cleaner. Air still gets out fine. @ricearu I'll have to try that. It actually only has 119k on it. Right now I run 10w-40 in it. I used to do 10w-30, but it went through it faster. Actually, just before the tranny went out end of january, it was hardly going through any.
  3. it is cleared up more, but my back door doesn't seal very well, so the smoke comes in the cab. Also, it was spitting oil up into the air cleaner, so I stuck a little rag over it. I'm probably gonna have to drive it for now. Anyone know of any good rebuild shops in colorado springs area? Also, prices? Guess I'll have to cross my fingers for warm days so I don't freeze with the window open.
  4. didn't have the chance to do a compression test, but I did a leakage test. The results were: 1) 25% 2) 15% 3) 30% 4) 35%. It was all blowing out through the rings (could here in the oil fill). So, what am I looking at here? I don't think I can do it myself, because with the time I have now, it would take me about 3 months. However, I don't make much either (like, $350-400 a month). Oh ya, did I mention this is my dd?
  5. Ok, so last night, I seafoamed my 87 Gl, ea82. It did fine, lot of smoke, but no problem. Well, as I was getting ready to leave school, it started puffing blue smoke. So, I pulled it back up to the bays, and opened the air cleaner. Full of oil, filter soaked, probably about half a cup in there.Had my instructor look at it, and we started checking vacuum lines for the pcv. It wasn't blowing any when it was sitting, but it had a good little breeze coming out of the oil fill tube. We soaked up all the oil, and I figured it drive it home gently, and change the oil (since I thought that the seafoam probably thinned it to let more by). But wait, it gets better. I was driving out, and going out on the road around the school, it got worse. I came up to a long, but not very steep hill, and it started pouring out white, slightly-grey smoke. So I pulled back up the service drive heading back towards the bays. About half way there (about 500 feet) the whole car was filled with smoke (more than the seafoam made), so I turned it off and coasted. Well, after that, it wouldn't start. It would crank, but no start. So, after about an hour of trying to figure out what to do, I was given permission to leave it overnight. I was probably 20 feet from where I needed to park, so since I was short on pushing power, I just put it in gear, and turned the starter. After it started rolling, the engine started, and held idle (granted, its idle is 2000rpm), but it was puffing out a thick stream of blue smoke. So, I got it in the parking spot, and waited for my ride. About an our later, my ride showed up, so I started it up to show them, and it wasn't smoking much at all. Still some blue, but not a lot. I assume this is because the oil is thicker when it's cold, so not blowing out as much. Here's my questions: -Would the seafoam have thinned the oil enough to cause at least part of this? -Will changing the oil help, or at least buy me some time? -Why the white smoke (btw, it did have a slight sweet smell, but not as much as when the headgasket in my parents van went out)? -What should I do?
  6. My recommendation to confirm that it is the dimmer, go get a $5-$10 multi-meter from walmart, harbor freight, ect., and ohm it out. If the resistance is out of range, or infinite, it's dead. Make sure there is NO power to the switch when you do this, or you'll fry it. If it is, just go to the junkyard, and get a new one. If you'd rather something else, just go to autozone and pick up some $15 LED strips.
  7. yes, it's a kickdown switch. Tells the transmission that you've got the pedal floored, so it shifts down to the lowest possible gear, and runs it very high in rpm. My 3eat ran the gears to 5500rpm before it would shift. I just switched mine to a 5speed d/r, and it isn't needed.
  8. if it happened after you did all that, make sure everything is tightened down. Sometimes, a spark plug is a little loose, and lets compression leak past it.
  9. one other thing you might try is an air filter. I changed plugs, wires, ect. However, I didn't really notice a difference until I changed the air filter. It could be clogged to the point that it can get air at half throttle, but not enough to supply full throttle. Since it is fuel injection, it could be or richening it because of an air-restriction. Just a thought. Air filter is less than or around $15, so if it works, cheap fix. 87roo: TBI is throttle body injection.
  10. found one. For others' reference, here is the quote. Also, the search button here sucks.
  11. I need a new water pump for my 87 GL, EA82 Carb. However, I don't know which one. Autozone has two snout lengths. Here is the link.
  12. well, I think the brat is the same. It would be easiest if you get one out of the same engined car (I assume EA81), but I think you can make an EA82 fit with a little bit of working. I just swapped over an 87 gl coupe. Got lucky enough to find one with the same year at the junkyard, it was a wagon. Bolted right up. Just make sure you get ALL the bolts, as some are different. Also, on mine, the front-half of the drive-shaft is a different length, and the diff is has a different ratio. Of course, if it's fwd, that's not an issue. Also, you need the plastic console pieces (well, don't "need" them, but I'd recommend them).
  13. denver area is the only one that does it anymore. Colorado springs doesn't do it anymore.
  14. I just changed the gaskets with new dealer ones when I changed my transmission, and all of the studs were tight, and all stayed in. Sorry, tried to say that in the last post, but guess I didn't communicate that very well (really should try that "sleep" thing).
  15. just checked the gaskets. It does back fire when the engine speed drops rapidly (like when shifting). And I've heard some that sound quieter in that regard, but they tend to tick (which, thank God, mine doesn't). If it's just the exhaust, then I'm gonna leave it alone. About $200 to fix that.
  16. Also, I think my is not choke shutting off, as my idle stays at 1750-2000rpm, but it isn't always there. And, when I tap the gas, it doesn't change it.
  17. What about rear seats between a wagon and a coupe? (wagon to coupe)
  18. Ok, so I just got my car driving again (so glad to be done with that transmission), time to look at the engine. When the car is under no load (decelerating, even throttle to just below what it takes to accelerate), the engine sounds smooth... loud (holes in exhaust), but smooth. But try to accelerate, and it sounds like a lawn mower. Why? Plug wires, plugs, air filter, oil filter, and oil are all new. Planning on doing the seafoam next week (want to figure out my new mpg first). Info: '87 GL coupe, 1.8L EA82 Carb. Originally an auto, now a 5-speed d/r. 118k miles.
  19. If you've got some of these guys offering to come help you, I'd take it man. These guys know what they are talking about.
  20. I think it has something to do with the season too. When I was looking for mine last year, I didn't really start finding any till april. Even then, if you weren't right on them, they'd be gone. Most of the time, if there was not an email, you couldn't get there fast enough. I got lucky on mine. I went to see one that this guy was selling for a friend. It could have been fixed, but I was looking for a first car... that I could drive. This one, not very road safe. The one I got was his wife's car that he hadn't put up yet. He had got an outback for $1000 from bent valves. But they have been a LOT harder to find. And the few left aren't exactly daily drivers.
  21. It's done!!! Well, still have to put the panels on, and I'll have to switch out the diff before I can use 4wd, but she drives.
  22. ya, passenger side has been fine every time. It's only the drivers side. And there was a Minor oil leak, but we changed the seals, and no more leak. I didn't changes the belts this last time, but the guy who did checked for sharp spots when he was picking out the teeth of the belt. I'm really thinking it has something to do with the oil pump, because both times, it was having oil pressure problems, second time being worse.
  23. I didn't think so on the camshaft. As far as checking the pulleys, I'll have to wait since the car isn't at my house. Qman: less than 100 miles the first one. Less than 30 the second.
