eating more drivers side timing belts
Dj7291993 posted a topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ok, so a while ago, I posted a thread that my dad's 88 gl was eating timing belts. We thought we had solved it (chunks of old belt in idler). We checked all the pulleys, very smooth, no seizing. Well, the next day, I was driving it to school, and when I came up to a stop light, it lost oil pressure. Now, it's been doing this recently at idle, but when you rev it up, it comes back. I know it wasn't just the gauge, because it went from ticking on one cylinder, to all of them. As I was going up a hill, even letting the gears run higher, it didn't come back. Next, it squeals and dies, just as I crested the hill. Coasted it over to a side street, and turned the started to confirm my suspicion. Timing belt gone... again. What could be causing this? At first I thought the oil was unrelated, but now I think they're linked. Could the oil pump have seized, or just quit working, and stopped the cam in it's bearings? Help please. -

sent you an email. My email is jmhollinrake@wwdb.org -
That's weird. Worked last night. try this one

I'd say it is probably that hot wire. I'm gonna try to attach the mitchell wiring diagram for an 87 gl. I might help you out. wiring diagram pdf download

anybody? I would be really happy if I found out all I needed was a switch.

So, I just had a realization. If the diff is a different ratio between auto and manual, when I finish swapping to a stick, will my speedo be off?

stubborn flex-plate bolts... HELP
Dj7291993 replied to Dj7291993's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Got it off. I ended up using a set from sears called bolt-out plus. Basically is a bladed socket that cuts into the side of it. The cutting part is curved, so as you turn, it bites further on. About $15. Wish I could have found it sooner. I'm gonna look it up for the link, and update the op with the solution. -
so, should it have the rest of the stuff needed to hook it up?

stubborn flex-plate bolts... HELP
Dj7291993 replied to Dj7291993's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well, I picked up an impact from sears, 580 ft lbs. If that don't work, Would it be best to cut them, or try loosening it? -
stubborn flex-plate bolts... HELP

nevermind. Impact broke. I think one of the bolts is just shy of completely rounded though. If it rounds, is there anything I can do about it? -
stubborn flex-plate bolts... HELP

No prob guys. Guess I should've been more specific. I did find a gun to borrow, and a friend is bringing an air compressor. I'm not sure the torque ratings on the gun, but hopefully it is more than the electric. -
So, my 87 gl coupe has a vacuum diaphragm on the throttle (the part on the engine, not the pedal) that looks like it would go to cruise control. It's got about 2-3 feet of vacuum hose coming off of it, but it doesn't go anywhere. I looked it up on mitchell1 ondemand at school, and it looks like the cruise of an xt. Does this mean that my car may be set up for cruise, or did they put it on all of em? Also, is this the xt setup, and if so, why would it be on my gl?

stubborn flex-plate bolts... HELP
Dj7291993 replied to Dj7291993's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
These bolts. I don't know if I could fit a cutting tool or not, but it seems like a bad idea to have studs in the engine. -
economy depends on carbed or injected. could be anywhere from 20mpg (sorry, you'll have to convert) in a carbed 3-speed, or up to around 40 in a fuel injected 5-speed. I can say that, because the first is my car, and the other is my dad's. As far as weak points, cv axles WILL go out, but it's not to bad. I would stay away from automatics also, as they seem to be weak (unless you want to convert). My auto 3-speed just went out a few weeks ago. Not sure about the 4-speeds from the turbos. Mileage: As long as it wasn't severely neglected, the milage shouldn't be a problem. Just keep in mind that with a high milage, it's probably going to need a little more upfront maintenance, i.e. timing belts, plug wires, plugs, cap and rotor, fluids. I wish I could help with the turbo, but I don't know much about them. I'm sure someone will help you out on that though.

stubborn flex-plate bolts... HELP
Dj7291993 replied to Dj7291993's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
no, it was not outside. However, the person that serviced the car before I got it was not into torquing. I twisted the head on my oil fill plug trying to get it off. I'm sure I could borrow one, but it is in my garage, and I don't have a compressor. I probably should note that I have plenty of room, as the tranny is out, and the car is jacked up. I might just need to get some offset box wrenches. I'm really starting to worry that I'm gonna kill the bolts. I just can't seem to get a good grip on the bolt, and leverage on the bar at the same time. Also, if one does end up rounding, what would be left, cuz I think one of them is close? -

I actually don't need to put the flex plate back, as I'm swapping in a manual. The flywheel at the junkyard came of with just an 18' bar, but these won't budge. I put some liquid wrench on last night, and more today, but they are still stuck. I could try a longer bar, but it keeps trying to slip. I might try that seafoam stuff though. Any other suggestions would be great, as I'm hoping to put the "new" one in tomorrow. -
Ok, so I have all but 2 of the flex plate bolts off my car. But these last 2 won't come off, even with wd-40 and an electric impact. I've also tried a breaker bar and a 6 point, but it keeps trying to slip. Any recommendations on how to get it off? I'm gonna try to pick up some liquid wrench, see if that helps. Please help me. Solution: NOTE: This method will mean you need new bolts. Also, mine were almost completely rounded. After using bars, impacts (electric, air, and mechanical), liquid wrench, and a snap on socket. I also killed 1 impact and 3 sockets. The final solution was a 15 dollar part from sears. It is called Bolt-out. Here is the link. Just pound it on the bolt, put a good 1/2" bar on it, and have someone hold the pivot point while you turn it. Once they break loose, you can take them out by hand.

Hey I'm new, First car, Wise words please?

Must just be your junkyard. The local pull-and-pay usually has at least 8-10 gl's, and around 6 legacy's. But I think they are usually wrecked. Anyway, welcome, and best of luck to you. The guys around here are VERY helpful. -
funny, the beast was the name we gave an old horizon, although, for different reasons. This looks much cooler though. Have fun!!!

88 GL eating drivers side timing belts
Dj7291993 replied to Dj7291993's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I don't even think it was 100 miles. Also, all of the teeth that were stripped, as far as I could see in the parking lot, were around the cam gear. Also, no unusual noises. I'll get those pics tomorrow afternoon. I'd do it tonight, but it is pitch black, and 36*. Also, forgot in the op, car has around 230k. -
My dad's got an 88 gl with fwd 5-speed. It does alright, but I would recommend studded tires, and some weight in the back, as these Subarus weigh NOTHING. Aside from that, as long as you know how to drive a stick in the snow, you should be fine. Just remember that weight thing when stopping.

Looks nice. The op pictures don't show up though. Don't think they'd fit on my coupe. Not sure it'd look right either. Anyway, nice work. -

I've got a 24 year old baby, 118k. Gl coupe. Although, the transmission i'm putting in it has 198k.
