What else is sitting in your parts pile there matt? Yes I might be interested in the oil cooler. But I am thinking I might take my tranny lines and run them through a seperate cooler, might make all the difference for both the tranny and the engine. Yea thursday can work, I am done at 3 Alex

Alex C replied to goatman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
cool, I already have a starter switch wired in so I can hit the starter and not start the engine. Guess Ill have to get some helpers and do this, I know the seals is only 7 something. -
Even though thats over halfway up the gauge? wow, didnt think they were supposed to run so hot.

So you can pull off the main pulley and put it back on without any special equipment? If so that means I can replace my front seal. Alex -
Well I guess I should put that switch in. yippee. Im so sick of rigging stuff.

Sorry to hear that, anything I can do to help?

Do you by chance know matt? He told me I shoudl go but I ended up having a prior commitment. But he said he was going to try out his new Subaru, any news on that? Alex

yea, the fans operate ok, though I think they come on too late ( 1/4 past the middle line). Im going to wire a switch in so I can override the thermo if I need to for the fans. mainly it gets hot if im at a stop, but even moving again at about 10+ mph brings the temp back down. It also will get hot at 65-75 when its 100+ degrees F out. Oh, and it will get not as hot but certainly over the line if Im climbing hills. Ive tried from none to 50-50 coolant mix. About half a thing of coolant does best. What is redline?
-
It functions, i dont know if properly. The hottest it will get is halfway between the middle line and the hot line. Ive had the radiator replaced, ive tried with and without a thermo, ive replaced the rad cap, flushed the system, there is flow evident in the radiator, and the fans kick on at a 1/4 past the middle line. As my car has a tendency to run hot I was looking through the turbo version and I noticed that there is a oil cooler attachement that fits on the pump, where can I get this and all of the associated hardware? Alex

Mine does the same thing, with no headwind I can go upwards of 68 with no problems, but anything past that or add a headwind and the driver side wiper starts skipping. Im going to try that spring idea.

OK, I keep hearing about mods
Alex C replied to Alex C's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Actually, my entire y-pipe is shot, it was so full of holes that I had to have the heat shield holes welded solid around it to quiet my exaust working right. I basically need to replace my entire system. -
I adjusted the bottom fron screw on the carb(hitachi ea81) by turning it 1/2 turn out. I remembered that a few years ago ( the last time I had to pass emissions) that I didnt originally pass until I turned that screw out about 8 turns ( I know it seems excessive, but I scored a.01% carbon monoxide with 12 ppm hydrocarbons at idle and a little more at 2500). What exactly does this screw do? I know its for the fuel, and Im thinking idle jet, but the idle jet shouldnt effect the main jets, and yet turning it gave me a lower score on the higher end as well. Also, I dont see where it says what model of hitachi I have? where exactly is the plate the designates this? Thanks Alex

Please excuse my potential stupidity, but isnt 180-200 PSI about double what an engine is supposed to have?

OK, but how much? How could I replicate that on my shoestring budget? -

OK, so far two mods that have two small probs, 5-speed would be great but, its a ain in the rump roast to drive a manual with one foot (try it sometime, interesting challenge), and how much is a weber? Alex -

OK, I should have thought of specifying that. I have a 82 GL 4-door sedan EA81 with a 2wd auto. Alex -
I know about the 6lug conversion (thanks matt) and I know I can swap out the front 2wd struts with 4wd struts (I still need to get a 4wd rear axle tube put in so I can control the rear height as well). I know I installed a higher torque camshaft. What other mods are there? What mods can I do on a shoestring budget? Alex

Hi, Im new with an old subaru
Alex C replied to Alex C's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
OK, I drove it around for 10 minutes or so and looked ( its a green LED btw), nothing. But I did notice later that it flashes when I go to turn it on, one series of tries while playing with this produced 3 short flashes, about a half hour later it only did one long flash. these were reproducible at the time. -
ea81 strut mix and match?
Alex C replied to the sucker king's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have an 82 2wd auto, and back when I first got it the struts were shot, so I had them replaced, but I had them replaced with the 4wd ones, but they are mounted in the same 2wd direction. My rubber caps show it both ways. I have an awesome ride, faster the better on bumps etc... Alex P.S. I also have the ride adjusted up a bit. -
