Correction, one plug is white, the other is blue, but they have the same color and pattern of wires, so they must go together. Also they are hooked up to the vacuum valves up in that corner.

I need help, charging system gone awry
Alex C replied to Alex C's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
OK, i pulled out the alternator and got a ride into medford to fight with shucks again. I reached into the alternator with a screwdriver and snapped a wire. Of course it failed. I just got the replacement installed, got a jumpstart to get my battery back up, and it works great, no more problems. BTW, it was 6-2-02 was the last time I had it replaced. My charging needle is up at the normal level, and the light is coming on with the ignition on but the engine not running, like it should be. Alex, not entirely shame free for snapping a wire. -

Ok I just tested the wires, everything checks Ok, so it has to be the alternator. So now Im not sure what to do. According to the FSM the red light not being on ever is also a problem with the alternator, mine is intermittant when I turn it on. I guess it hasnt been charging in a while, because the needle has been way low, which is the voltage in the battery right? but I also check the voltage on the battery, got 12.38. going bald ever quicker this way. When standing facing the engine compartment from in front, what is the bundle of open connectors on the passenger side by the firewall? And why have I seen not only on mine but on others the blue and green connectors hooked up? What does this do?

What does the fuse box have to do with it? The battery isnt getting charged. Also, the battery was replaced about 6 months ago. Alex -
OK, here goes the story of my screwed up charging system. I bought my car in 97. It is an 1982 GL 4-door sedan with a 3AT. About 6 months after I bought it the alternator failed. I replaced it. About a year later, it failed again, however my ******* self lost the receipt for that auto store. So I went to shucks, got a lifetime warranty alternator through them. So about a year later it fails. (Failure meaning red light and needle jumping all around depending on RPM). I went back to shucks and the alternator tested good, but I talked them into replacing it anyway. I installed it and everything was fine, again. So about a year later it fails again, same way. So repeat this formula with mild variations on a yearly basis, that has been my life with alternators and my car. Until this year. This year it starts flashing the red light intermittently, and it only has a problem in not always charging enough, never too high. Of course they test it to be ok and refuse to replace it, saying my wiring etc... SO I go home with it acting up, drive around for he weekend (problem started on wed of that week), that monday I go in again, they say there is too much electrical noise to test it in the car and again say my wiring is at fault. So I go home again. I proceeded to cut off the wire on the back and replaced the severely aged connector that goes onto the post. It started charging a bit more but then quickly sank back to rest on the line right below the 12 and pretty much stayed there, occasionally dipping to the bottom, but never showing the red light. SO today its doing its thing, i turn it off at the store after work and when I go to start it it sounds like the battery is weak. Same thing at the video store 5 minutes later. Then I go to my friends for a few hours and when i go to start it its obviously so weak Im lucky it started, I turn the headlights on and they are obviously running on battery as well. I limp home like that, making it luckily. So what is the problem? Why does replacing the alternator fix the problem? What do i do now? Thanks for any help rendered. Alex

I have an answer for once. I work at my local harley dealer and one of the techs has done this. It works great until you hit 55mph, then there isnt enough flow or something.

which means? -
umm, how often do these half to be replaced?

ok, What happens on an EA81 if the thermo vacuum valve (II) has broken vacuum lines? I know it controls something, but what I dont know. It seems to run fine without it, at ~25 mpg. So any ideas? Also, while driving home the light conditions were right for me to see a small could of something when I stomped on the accelerator at 70mph and the engine started detonating, it went away as soon as I let off the pedal. thanks, Alex

actually, i had a thought, get an old two piece(dont know if it exists) turbo and take off the drive(exaust) side, leaving just the compressor side, drill it for a drive shaft, put on a pulley, make an adapter for the carb, put in an airbox for the filter, and hook up some brackets and away you go. Of course I could just be smoking crack. But then again, there are 50 buck junkyard days here. Hey Mike, wanna help me do this? Alex

Bumpster? Anyone?

So umm, did my new FSM stay in the same warehouse? Should I drilll it for a 3 ring? Looking forward to having that to work with. Alex

why not make full copies of all of the old fsm's available online in pdf? The new ones would be harder because of copyright laws. But that would be nice if we could do those as well. Alex

due to old wiring I had to put in a starter switch. However I didnt put it anywhere easy to see (little cubby on the left hand side of the steering wheel). So when I go to start You still have to use the key to turn the power on and unlock that touchy steery wheel lock, then you press the button. I have to go start the car every time I have anyone try to start it at tire places etc.. Not the best anti theft, btu its something. I have been thinking of some hardwired switch prior to the key ign system wireloom, but hidden so you could kill the car and no one could hotwire it or see what is missing. Alex

I had a question or two. has anyone ever used Nox on a stock carbed sub? How about a supercharger instead of a turbo? I know my cracnk pulley has a slot for a belt right between the accessory and the a/c belts. What blower would you use, how would you hook it up? I remember seeing a vw bored out and fitted with a 10-71 blower, output was 800hp. Why dont we try this with our cars? smaller blower of course. A 10-71 is for a big block v-8. Anyway, just some random braincell interactions I had to share. Alex

Thanks again Will. That reminds me, Mike(78skunkaroo) and I were wondering, can your dealership ship parts to our local dealership? is there a better shipping rate if you can do that? I know when I had to get a speedo cable It had to come from W. virginia. Or are the Subaru dealerships like the harley dealerships? all sort of seperate but still able to look up each others inventories? Thanks Alex

OK Will, can you call me monday morning at my work? say 1pm your time? that will make it 10am my time, 541-535-5515 thanks, Alex
