I want one, how much again? Plus how much for the lines and can we use any oil cooler? PS, fitting a tranny oil cooler in front of the radiator when you have the ac condensor still there is a pain. Takes a few hours to get it all right and snug in there. Also, hook up the lines first, then mount the cooler once you know where its going to sit. Alex

70 and change including shipping, sounded like he has access to bunches of em in different years. UPS is about 10 ( calculated was 8.20, but I know things happen so I told him to put it at 10). Alex

Thank you for the excellent hookup for the FSM. I owe you one. Alex

Stupid car, I swear it hates me

They had it, and they already had my new vac modulator for my tranny. Oh, and I picked up a tranny cooler. Alex -
I noticed that its dumping water every chance it gets now, and no its not coming from the thermo housing. I finally found the leak today, heard the steam coming out. My hose thats supposed to go to the heater from right off of the pump is leaking from the rear. Think Napa has it? That or have the dealer deliver it. In truth though I wouldnt want to own any other brand of car, and considering Ive put so many freakin hard miles on it im very happy for what Ive paid. 4k up front 7 years ago, and about 2.8k in parts and labor since then, engine rebuild being 1.2k of that. Here is how you gain extra tire clearance: Get a 2 inch diameter metal pipe, about a foot in length. Get 2 of your heaviest friends. Take the car out of gear and leave the parking brake off. Have both friends sit on therear fo the car, then place metal pipe between tire and fender, roll car forwards and backwards slowly until the fender is stretched out a bit. I used to have a set of XT-120's and when the rear of the car bottomed out the tires would rub. My local tire place showed me how to do this, worked great. You cant see the difference except that it clears now.

smoke and pcv's and modulators, oh my
Alex C replied to Alex C's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
you saw it at low smoke, it was far worse, uncle buck like -
to those that are interested: the local dealership delivered four parts to me yetserday at work (thanks guys). Those four parts were: 88 C* thermostat, pcv valve, 2 dealership license plate trims. This morning I tackled the installation of these parts. I stopped by napa and picked up a thermo gasket, and a set of NJK plugs. I started with the pcv installation. I never knew that the valve itself is on the manifold, I was thinking it was the black F vacuum part, kinda like on a chevy. Anyway, I pulled it out, it was oily and had carbon chunks on it, and it still sorta moved around inside, but not as good as the new one. I also checked the hose going from the pcv to the F-piece, it was also oily and full of carbon chunks, and ince it was pinching in the middle I found a secton of spare water hose the same diameter ( I store all of my car parts and tool in my trunk, so there is all sorts of weird things back there). I then proceeded to pull the plugs out, the passenger side were light brown with a bit of carbon on them, the driver side were the same except for some white buildup on the ground electrode. The worst being the driver side rear. (When I did my headgaskets a few years back the driverside rear was running super lean, but that was a maladjusted intake valve and I corrected that when I adjusted the valves). The last project was to install a thermostat (no I didnt have one in). I pulled off the old gasket and fit the OEM part in (fit like a glove, unlike those junky aftermarket ones from parts stores). After putting everything back the way it was (vacuum lines, water, etc..) I started the car, got a cloud of smoke the quickly went away. I drove to medford with no problems. When i restarted the car it was smoking heavily, full on future lung cancer patient. It was funny and sorta embarrasing. (when people yell that your car is on fire). It smoked badly the next 3 times I started it up and drove it. The smoke smelled a bit like oil and a bit like sweet (I dont have any antifreee, so thats not it). My last try was after it cooled down I adjsuted my vise-grips and clamped the vacuum line for the modulator off. Voila, no smoke. So Im thinking Adam's suggestion that my vacuum modulator is bad was a good one. Good thing there is a mechanical backup for the modulator, even though it wont shift till its at a higher rpm. One thing I noticed about the water temp, the needle stays perfectly horizontal when its warm now. This is also a hair below the spot where I know my fans will kick on by themselves without me throwing the switch. I guess my gauge is off a bit. Thanks for listening, Alex P.S. no more lithia license plate trim

oh yea, that was a little difficult Alex

what special tool for the heads? I am reading this site, interesting, but Im curious about a special tool? Whats it for? Alex

ok, I took it for a test drive last night and nothign was wrong. So I went to work today with it, no problems, went to the bank at lunch, no probs, went fromthe bank to get food, no probs, started it after eating and big clouds of white smoke came out, followed me all the way back to work. At work I shut it off, and smoke was even pouring out of the carb. After work I started it with the techs watching, blew a huge cloud and that was it. they said rings or valve guides and that it was oil smoke. Anyway, I drove it from work to the store by my house, no probs, started it afterward to finally go home and it blew out clouds and clouds of smoke, huge haze behind me the whole way home. Somehow, i dont think its a head gasket anymore. Alex

yesterday, there were clouds after hitting the gas, but then it was just wisps while driving steady, today nothing.

well some moron didnt put the radiator cap back on after filling the water up after noticing the smoke last night in medford. So no wonder it got really hot (about 2mm below the pull over or die line). I filled the water up today after work (PS, the bus sucks), Checked the oil. No water in the oil, and no oil in the water. I got in and it started right up, no weird idle or any other signs of a massive failure. Also, it isnt blowing any more smoke( steam?). IM going to take it to work with me tomorrow and see what happens. Alex

This came out of the exaust. I think its a head gasket. I havent checked the oil yet or the water (this evening when I get home via bus). What head gaskets should I order?
-
I was running around medford this evening and my car started billowing white smoke. It still runs ok and I even got home to ashland, It didnt get hot until I got off the freeway and dropped my friend off. IM thinking i can fix it this weekend, but, I have no ride till then, which sucks. I think i blew a headgasket, but Im hoping its somethign easier. and of course I dont know which one. Alex

I have an 82 ea81, but same problem, hopefully the same solution. There was a glass fuse to the left of the ecu, mine was so old it had fallen apart, didnt burn out, just came apart into 4 parts. Once I replaced that fuse the fan worked fine again.
-
My 82 ea81 3at (3100lbs) can go 0-60 in 24 seconds. the only mod is my high torque cam. The tranny shifts pretty good, no slushing. So what are some of your numbers with similar and different setups? Alex
-
yea, sounds good to me, I have an 82 with an ea81 and a 3spd AT, 65mph is about 3850 rpm, and 75mph is 4500rpm. My folks new rav-4 with the overdrive off in drive turns 3700 at 70 mph. As long as you keep it cool and lubed it will be fine. Many homebuilders use the ea81/82 because they can gear it down and run it at 5000rpm forever, which keeps them at their peak horsepower. Alex

archemitis, which dealership do you work for? I just started at mine a month ago, D&S Harley Davidson in phoenix oregon. Its much better than my sears parts job. Alex

But this summer I am scratchbuilding a new exaust system. IM going to do 1.75 pipes for the Y, then go to a 2.00 pipe for the run back to the muffler, then im bolting two stock harley mufflers (1.75) together and making a small Y(1.75) for them that feeds from the 2.00 pipe. I dont know if it will work, but its got to be better than what I have now. Now, if anyone is interested I can get many more pairs of mufflers for 40.00$ per pair. These are stock off of new bikes (people put louder ones on when they buy a harley), so they are barely used. Anyway, im not in this for profit, just sharing the wealth, so that is my price I can get them for, plus what ever shipping would be to you all. These mufflers are meanth for a 1500cc engine, but obviously can allow for a lot more. The 1.75 inlet for them is a good clue, plus the higher rpm they expect to run, which means more exaust has to flow through them. Alex

Interesting, one of my new coworkers claims to have towed a 16 ft trailer with a 600lb tongue weight about 30 ft with a brat, just to show it could be done. NO idea of the truth or specifics. Alex
