I need help... Tranny conversion
Alex C replied to TheMeatWagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
FSM=Factory Service Manual. I knew that much. But where do I get them and how much? Alex -
I went about online checking part numbers, I only found one different number, the 1982 GLW has different axles for the 2wd, but the 4wd has the same axles as every other model. I just have a GL but I wanted to make sure. Alex

While I drive an EA81 auto ive put the better part of 100k on my car at around 4500 rpm. No problems for me. Also those kit builders that use ea81's liek to gear it so that the engine is at 5000 rpm for the flight, as that puts it at the top of the power band and you get good fuel usage out of it. Alex

HI, I have a question that us locals were unsure of the answer to. For an EA81 car are their any differences between front axles for the different tranny types? (I am aware of the beefier front axles for 4wd). Do they all have the same spline count? Are they all the same length? thanks Alex

wish my speedometer worked.

Easy, tell me your exact tire measurements, your 5th gear ratio, and your diff ratio. we can easily find out how fast you are going by doing some math. I used the same techniques to determine how much slippage there is from engine to wheel with my auto tranny while driving at 4k in drive on the freeway. Alex -
Where to install aftermarket stereo
Alex C replied to [HTi]Johnson's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I ended up with a gm style big cd player, I put it in the tray at the bottom of the console. I can just remove a disk when the shifter is in park. I think it worked pretty good, plus its not at an extreme angle, which will damamge cd players or cause them to not work right. I think you dont want to go over 30 degrees max. Alex -
An external cooler is a mini radiator made for the auto trans cars (other applications as well). It has brackets that attach it to the front of your radiator and you move your tranny cooler lines to it from the radiator. The line for the tranny fluid through the radiator is pretty meek, and doesnt do much. The cooler will keep it much cooler. I think most parts stores will have them for about 30 bucks. I know Napa definately does. Alex

think of the extra hole for the hood brace, so you can open the hood farther. they new you might need to fix it and just made it easier. Makes more sense than making it impossible to repair. Or the plugs in the front frame members that allow you access to the two long head bolts on each side so you can take the heads off without removing the engine. Great design ideas. Oh yea, the tool kit that is provided, a very nice touch. Do they still do this in the new cars? Alex

Mine gets hot, but there isnt a warning light considering its age (82). Mine also gets hottest at stoplights. However, the problem is similar, change to a external tranny cooler, which is what im doing. Alex PS, mine is over 4 on the freeway too if im going faster than 68 mph.

Bad news, I just came from downtown medford, its all blocked off, cant get closer than tenth of a mile (few blocks). I am called it a day after trying to fight traffic for 20 minutes to get there and went home. We should have met at 6 when the streets were still open, but I know that wasnt possible. Ideas for the next time??? Alex -

front wheel bearing replacement
Alex C replied to lagwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
that Im not so sure of, But my manual ( haynes? or hayes?) said that I needed a machine shop to remove and replace the bearings. they have to be pressed out and pressed in. Obviously I didnt have to do that. -

yes it was a good burrito. J/K Ayway, I started my car tonight after not driving it for 2 hours, and a huge cloud of smoke came out of the exaust. Bluish in color. It hasnt repeated in the one start after that. It smelled like unburnt gas, not like oil, even though it was blue. I was parked on a hill with the drivers side down, but ive been parking like that all year and ive never had this happen before. The motor was rebuilt about 6 years ago (almost 70k miles). Alex
